We'd still have to pay half their salary though right?

Not if someone picks them up, they take the contract. That sounds like one of those strange Chell things like a player needing to pass waivers when you call them up.

maybe we should put dickinson and poolman on waivers. hopefully someone picks them up and we save their cap space

That is actually a really good idea.  I have so baked it into my brain that they have negative value, that I didn’t really consider seeing if some contender is willing to take on the liability for the sake of loading up some extra depth.

The picks they save by not getting a player by trade could use used to offload these guys in the offseason to a rebuilding team if they didn’t work out as a longer term roster player.

Dickenson has a chance to be a good recovery project.  He for some reason just hasn’t been a fit here, so maybe the right line mates or a different system could turn him around.

Recall waivers were a legit issue but done away with years ago.

Oh really! That is interesting! I don't recall that myself but I knew they did it in the EA NHL games for a long time which had some people confused. Do you know roughly when that was a thing?

Done away with when the 2012 CBA was signed.
