Did he really need to announce it?  I thought he was done playing years ago.

His contract expired at the end of last season. Chicago had traded his contract to Arizona so he was technically an Arizona Coyote at the end of his career. I guess he did not want to retire as a Coyote and chose the 1 day contract with the Blackhawks.

What was his LTIR retirement party for again?  Equipment allergy or something like that?

Great player, he burned the Canucks constantly...but kind of a weird way to go out (cap circumvention, obviously).

Yet the Canucks never get a break.

Was it that they just never caught a break? Or that their management wasn't smart/devious enough to ensure they got a break?

No they thought it would be devious to sign Luongo to a ridiculous contract. And got burned by it, harder than any other team.

The funny part about this is that Gillis actually outsmarted the NHL with the Luongo contract. And Canucks get punished as a result.

The next GM couldn't outsmart anyone and Canucks still get punished.

We can't win

Reminds me of that Simpsons episode where Homer removed a crayon from his brain. Regular Homer is always made fun of because he's too dumb, but people turn on him even more once he increases his intelligence after they removed the crayon.

Personally he was an amazing player and CHI doesn't win early at least, without him.   One of the best two way players of his generation, and an incredible scorer.   Datsyuk and Hossa.

As far as his condition goes - it wasn't made up ... skin flaking off and rashing that bad makes it a viable reason to go on the LTIR.   It's rare but it happens.   As far as that rapist trainer goes - and who was in or not in the know - that's another story.

As for Luongo's contract, teams were warned there would be consequences...that our team (so far) was the only team to get slapped with it is something different.    You know JB would have just signed a plug anyways so maybe it's a blessing in disguise.    That was a ridiculous deal, entirely front loaded (and for any of you that gets the future value of money, Luongo made out like a freaking bandit with that deal ... a total bandit)  ....  and ALL that cap savings was used up to on Booth and Ballard.    Too bad he didn't re-sign Mitchell right?

Edit:  Weber.   Will the league do the same with that deal if he retires?  I certainly hope so.    At least they'd be consistent.

I think it's in poor taste to sign a 1 day contract given that they got out of the cap penalty.

He was also part of the leadership core that turned a blind eye to sexual abuse.

His cowardice should not be celebrated.

Did they though?  A player on the LTIR is a different story.    Players that can't play contracts are insured (for the most part).... and they've earned that money otherwise they wouldn't have got the deal in the first place.    We as Canuck fans shouldn't be too victim about Luongo's deal.   He had earned a much higher cap on a shorter contract.    By creating a contract like that, it allowed us to have a Hamhuis almost...a couple Higgins at least.    At the time nobody wasn't in love with that deal - nobody.    And as for how it went - Luongo was very good right until maybe his last season.

Except his retirement precipitated the Blackhawks' downfall and took them by surprise.  He scored 26 goals his final season for them.  Toews and Kane were only in year 2 of matching deals at a 10.5M AAV.  They traded Panarin and Hjalmarsson in the off-season in prevision of cap issues.  Had they known he wasn't going to be able to continue playing, they probably wouldn't have made those trades.  The Blackhawks haven't made the playoffs since other than that bubble season at 24 teams.  They really got no benefit from him not playing.

Yes they got out of it with him going on LTIR. The whole retroactive penalty rule is b.s. in the first place, but if they're going to add it, LTIR shouldn't have been a get out of jail free card.

I just think it's in poor taste and is a mockery, especially with the sexual assault coverup.

Listen i get it.   It is stupid that we were the only team to get burned with that .... what happens next with Weber could even rub it in.    CHI fans have to deal with their issues as well.   Their first cup absolutely was sullied.
