Court finds Depp should be awarded $15M US, gives Heard $2M US in counterclaim

A U.S. jury has ruled that Johnny Depp and his ex-wife, actor Amber Heard, were both defamed over claims of abuse before and during their brief marriage, but awarded Depp more damages in the highly public case.

Heard remained solemn in the Virginia courtroom as the verdict in the libel case was delivered. Depp was not present.

Depp, perhaps best known for his starring role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, had accused Heard of libelling him with a 2018 op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post describing herself as "a public figure representing domestic abuse."

On Wednesday, the jury in Fairfax County Circuit Court sided with Depp on that front, and found he should be awarded $15 million US in damages.

But the jury also had to rule on a counterclaim filed by Aquaman star Heard, who said she was defamed by Depp's lawyer when he called her allegations a hoax.

The jury also found in favour of Heard, and said she should receive $2 million US.

Depp and Heard met on the set of the 2011 film The Rum Diary and married in Los Angeles in February 2015. Heard, a model and actress, filed for divorce the following year and obtained a restraining order against Depp on the grounds of domestic abuse. The divorce was finalized in 2017.

Heard 'disappointed,' Depp 'humbled'

Following the verdict, Heard said she was heartbroken.

"I'm even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It's a setback. It sets back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly humiliated. It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously," she said in a statement posted on her Twitter account.

Meanwhile, Depp said "the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled."

"I hope that my quest to have the truth be told will have helped others, men or women, who have found themselves in my situation, and that those supporting them never give up," he said in a statement posted to Instagram.

They should be sentenced to have to spend the rest of their lives together. They both give me the heebie jeebies.

Yeah I can't think of two people that deserve each other more.

Didn't Johnny act like a **** when he was at the beginning of his acting career filming 21 Jumpstreet in Vancouver?  I always chalked that up to him wanting out of his contract (true, nobody put a gun to his head ala Luca Brasi & forced him to sign that TV contract).  I seem to recall one incident with a security guard at a hotel & him.  Course I'm just going by memory so I might have him confused with some other actor.

I heard he voluntarily honoured his contract even when greater things called.

Let me get in that I was once in a foursome with Depp, Dom deLouise's son and another guy -- for a game of ping-pong at a cast party in Vancouver.

Like he had much of a choice back then (he was basically a nobody back then).  Part of the reason he took the job (signed contract) was a chance to work with actor Frederic Forrest.  But that actor left early in the series run as he didn't like the direction of the show.

Very sad and pathetic at the same time.  When he started his film career, it didn't take long for him to climb to the

cream of the crop.  He was becoming one of the better actors of his generation.  How far he has slid downhill

in the past few years.  He'll have to work his arse off if he wants to turn this sinking ship around.

Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr, who had horrific addiction issues, managed to straighten himself out and has

since become one of the best actors of his generation.  One watch of his portrayal of Charlie Chaplin and I

knew he was going to have a great career.

Apparently he pled guilty & was given an "absolute discharge".

actually now that I think of it there was one movie of his I didn't mind, called Dead Man which was a pretty interesting take on a western. Not sure if it was him or the writing that was good.

Thx.  I haven't seen that (but may in the future if I get the chance).

Poor ol' Johnny D got entangled with a maniac!

Btw, LOVE his 90's flick "Dead Man". Prob the best symbolic representation of 'Murrica you'll ever find.

I watched that movie two decades ago and smoked too much weed before, can't remember a damn thing other then watching Johnny Depp in a black and white movie haha

Might rewatch it

I have tried to avoid this story as much as possible. My take away is simply two horrible people being horrible to each other for publicity sake.

I tried to avoid it but YouTube kept shoving it down my throat so I finally gave in.

Amber Heard really gave off the psycho vibe to me.  She took a $&!# in his bed, was recording him all the time hoping that he'd say that he's abusing her, etc.

There's even a recording where she says "I'm not punching you, I'm hitting you".

I should've avoided all this drama altogether, probably at least an hour of my life that I could've spent on capfriendly instead.

So many weird, indelible scenes, woven into a very dark sense of humour. This Jim Jarmusch bloke vividly portrays what America really is.
