[Trade] Stars trade Ben Bishop, 2022 7th-round pick to Sabres for future considerations

Is this an indication that the Stars intend to remain competitive, or is this something else?

It's about cap flexibility.  It's a real disadvantage to have LTIR contracts on the books.  It carves into a team's cap space, creates bonus overages and limits who they can recall.  It's all benefit to be able to move out those contracts.  Buffalo is trying to reach the floor.

I understand why but i don't agree with being able to trade players who are injured and won't play again

the whole LTIR thing is bungled. Why should the Canucks have to operate in LTIR if Ferland can never play again? there really needs to be a category for this that doesn't effect the cap, that can't be over exploited by teams. E.g., if you agree to go on it, part of it is that you never play the game again.

holy cow.

@mll I thought this kind of thing was supposed to cost teams?

Buffalo needs the contract to reach the floor with the Boychuk 6M one coming off their books.  NYI managed to trade Boychuk without even adding a pick after Buffalo traded Eichel's 10M contract.
