Popular Post -Vintage Canuck-
Details: Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a two-year, entry level contract with defenceman Filip Johansson. "Filip plays a solid defensive game and has shown consistent improvement over the past three seasons." said Allvin. "He will continue to develop his game in Sweden with Frölunda next season, but we look forward to welcoming him to Vancouver for Development Camp at UBC next month." Johansson, 22, is coming off his second season with Frölunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), where he recorded 11 points (3-8-11), eight penalty minutes and a +5 plus/minus rating. He also collected seven points (5-2-7) in nine playoff games, ranking t-1st on the team in goals (5) and co-leading Frölunda defencemen in points (7) to help the team reach the playoff semi-finals. In 132 career SHL games split between Frölunda HC and Leksands IF, Johansson has registered 26 points (11-15-26) and 34 penalty minutes. The Västerås, Sweden native has also represented his country multiple times during his career, highlighted by podium finishes at the 2016 World U-17 Hockey Challenge (gold), 2017 Hlinka Gretzky Cup (bronze), and 2018 IIHF World U18 Championship (bronze). The 6'1", 176-pound defenceman was originally selected by the Minnesota Wild in the first round, 24th overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. https://www.nhl.com/canucks/news/vancouver-canucks-sign-filip-johansson/c-334589598 9 3 4 1

Solinar
Interesting that he's a former first rounder and that Minnesota gets a compensatory pick at 56. 2
rekker
Recent first rounder, 22 years old, righty? Sounds solid, anyone watch him play recently? Edited June 14, 2022 by rekker

The deadline to sign him was this 1 June and the Wild elected to take the compensatory pick instead. Was considered quite a reach as he was projected to go around the 3rd round. Fenton compared him to Jonas Brodin and talked of how much he likes smart defensemen.
Quantum
These are the kind of bets I like to see. 22, former first round pick who refused to sign in Minnesota, RD, good size. He will come in and compete for a roster spot this season. Impressive work by Allvin & company.

Best I can see is Minnesota receives a compensation, 56th overall pick for not signing him. That makes sense as they would rather have the pick than a project player. Good project for us though, by the sounds of it. Edited June 13, 2022 by rekker
CRAZY_4_NAZZY
Honestly as poor as his development has gone, he automatically shoots up to the top of the board for our right side D prospect pool. That is how shallow and poor some of our defensive depth is. No disrespect to Woo, but thisbyear was really hard to watch for him after a very promising rookie season last year. Myrenberg had a solid season but is a project as is Viktor Persson. Could be a nice pickup. Was set up to fail with the expectationa of being drafted wayyyy to early. I saw most scouting pages have him ranked mid 2nd to late 3rd round.

GB5
Looks like the Wild wanted to sign him and retain his rights but Johansson stayed in Europe. https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/12/wild-prospect-filip-johansson-signs-two-year-extension-in-sweden.html Maybe could amount to something in a few years, only a handful of players taken after Johansson in the 2018 draft have played a full season or more. Be interesting to compare him and Woo at camp considering they were picked about 10 spots apart in the same draft 3
Solinar
It seems to be that his offensive ceiling isn't that high, and the compensatory pick is worth more than the prospect at the moment. A mid round 2nd pick isn't a bad return for a prospect you don't feel confident in projecting more time, energy, and cash into. Restart, and try do better on the next one. And this draft is going to be somewhat deep, so, maybe they have someone already in mind.

I'm ok with that. 1

He signed a 2 year extension in the SHL back in December 2021 with Frolunda, It doesn't seem like that's the kind of move a first round pick makes if the Wild truly refused to sign him. Seems like it was mutual, at the very least. https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/12/wild-prospect-filip-johansson-signs-two-year-extension-in-sweden.html
