Personally I would look at Haydn Fleury out of Seattle as a possible bottom 6 guy/reclamation project

Could be good. He isn't an offensive juggernaut, but then he wouldn't be brought in for that particular purpose. He did have a concussion a few seasons back, but I haven't noticed anything regarding ongoing or new problems.

What do you figure the price might be? I wouldn't mind an exchange of contracts. but I suspect that Seattle would want a pick.

Any thoughts on Cale?

Rathbone - Bear

as bottom 5th-8th defensemen? I would be pretty thrilled with that.

Thing is he is not going to sign a bottom pair / depth defenseman contract. He is not close with the Hurricanes on dollar amount and if a team is desperate to pony up bigger dollars for him, it may be in the team's best interest to let him be moved under contract vs unsigned. The player does not believe he is worth what his role was in Carolina. Time will tell.

It would seem that the only way that the Canucks could get Bear is by trade.

Assuming Bear wants an increase over his current contract ($2 million per), then the Canucks would have to hand over their 2nd round pick for this year, which they currently do not have. This also assumes that Carolina elects to not match the contract offer made by the Canucks (which I suspect they probably wouldn't).

And

bear isn’t worth even 1.5 mil, so it’s moot.

2023- and not 2022 picks.  Players can only sign an offer sheet at the opening of free agency which is after the draft.

Well, folks around here feel that Bear isn't what they want, and indications are that Juulsen doesn't turn a lot of people's cranks (I wouldn't mind if he made it. He has/had a lot of defensive upside before injuries pushed him back a step).

Here's the list of the upcoming UFA RDs on Cap Friendly. Any of these jump out and strike your fancy? https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/free-agents/2023/caphit/all/defense/ufa/desc/right?stats-season=2022

If not any of these, who do feel the Canucks can get for some kind of bargain basement price (and are any good)?

Either of Manson or Lyubushkin would be GREAT fits for what we need. Manson is older and likely pricier. I'm a big fan of attempting signing Lyubushkin personally.

Miller could be a bit of a "bargain-hail Mary" as well.

Pysyk would be solid depth at near league min-$1+m range.

If we can manage to trade Myers out, trade one of Miller/Boeser/Garland for Marino and sign Lyubushkin though, I'd be a happy camper.

We still need to hopefully find an eventual long term, top pair partner for Hughes but that could be a solid top 4 for the next few+ years while we find/develop that guy.

Hughes, Marino

OEL, Lyubushkin

Some mix/rotation of Dermott, Rathbone, Burroughs, Schenn and Poolman in the bottom 4.

Yup. I was just showing up to correct myself.  :)

Why don't we do something novel, like draft and develop our own defensive prospects?

That would require us using draft picks on em. Something I been asking for us to do every year. That's dumb though. Lets just keep taking other team's castoffs and hope they magically pan out.

Hughes, Marino

OEL, Lyubushkin

28 year old with questionable foot speed and has averaged 15:36 of ice time in his NHL career. He definitely wouldn't be penciled in to the top 4 and I couldn't see him beating schenn out for RHD on the 3rd pairing. Definitely not the type of defenceman that JR and PA are looking for.

His player card looks like he might be a pretty good fit with Dermott, BUT he would have to come cheap. As the guy above me said he has questionable foot speed. We’re trying to get bigger and faster, which Bear is neither.

This thread has officially set a new record for puns. The above quote gets the most valuable pun award and we can declare the contest over.

The problem here is that he apparently wants more than his QO (about 2 million) AND the Canucks would need to give up an asset in trade.

I don't see it. He would be in competition for ice time with Schenn, Burroughs, Poolman, Keeper, and potentially Juulsen. It would also probably be possible to sign Stecher for less and not give up an asset. And Stecher is better defensively, which is what the Canucks need on the right side.  But I think the main thing the Canucks  are looking for is a RD who is bigger, better, more physical and good enough defensively to play a matchup (shutdown) role on the top defensive pairing.

This..... spot on...

Physical, and one of the better shut down D out there (who actually skates pretty well), with a history of playing well in a complimentary/shut down top 4 role (with OEL, then Chychrun and then Reilly in Toronto... bunch of scrubs ) in both Arizona and Toronto. And he shouldn't be expensive.

He's actually not dissimilar to a younger Schenn! Schenn may very well beat him out to play with OEL.. In which case we have him to pair with Rathbone!

I think that's exactly what management should/will be looking for to complement all of our puck movers.

And he's been closer to 17 minutes the last 3 years. Likely largely a function of the physical game and hard minutes he plays (and his lack of offense).

Why would we be interested? We have Schenn, Poolman and Burroughs all duking it out for that 3RD position. What we need are top 4 RD, not tweeners. We have enough of those.

I could see Burroughs and Schenn being interchangeable. Poolman… can stay by the pool.
