[Report] Maple Leafs open to trading Ilya Mikheyev’s rights

I can't be the only one thinking he's just potentially a more expensive Pearson. Lol. Albeit slightly younger.

On the one hand, Mikheyev is more skilled, and significantly more fast (he's one of the fastest skaters in the league). On the other though, he's had difficulty staying healthy.

It's true that Mikheyev may have a similar statistical impact as Pearson. But based on Rutherford's stated goal to make the Canucks younger and faster, he sounds like a player Vancouver will target. In fact, if they can get an asset in return for Pearson's contract (2nd or 3rd round pick?), and then sign Mikheyev for only slightly more money, that seems like a net positive for the team.

Adding him and Necas in a potential Miller trade would make us significantly faster on the rush. If we draft a great skater at 15 like Nazar we are well on our way to changing the speed element of the team. I could also see JR and Allvin going after Kapanen as they have targeted him before and he could be had for cheap or part of a bigger deal that brings in Marino as well.

Faster is fair. But I dunno. Feels like a slight upgrade move. Unless his defensive skills is legitmately superior over Pearson, which seems unlikely cause he's solid defensively. Mikheyev is gonna cost seemingly 1mil more. At a minimum. It is true though that Rutherford seemingly doesn't like Pearson.

Mikheyev ranked 1st on the Leafs in many defensive metrics.

Only look for value contracts in free agency.

This is not a value contract.

I really like the idea of adding this guy, but oof thats a lot of the cap. Our new mega-front office would really have to be high on him.

Perfect. I needed a good laugh to start my day.

If he's in high demand then it's possible he could fetch that much given how crazy UFA numbers have been, but I sure hope the Canucks stay away at that price.  They would need to move some cap out just to fit him in at a more reasonable cap number.

His numbers last season were a bit better than Pearson's when Pearson signed a 3.75M contract with LA and a bit worse than Garland's when Garland signed his 4.95M with us. Honestly fair value for Mikheyev is probably around 4.5M AAV so 4.75M wouldn't be much of a stretch. I wouldn't give him 5.5 but he's probably capable of replacing Garland on our roster (should we decide to trade him) considering the overall package he brings.

Fixed.

outside of salary, is there a reason you don't like him? some of the best defensive numbers on the Leafs, 21 goals in 57 games, he's got speed to burn and he's not a smurf. I'd love to see what he can do with Bo.

Salary.  I think he's a really good third liner but a questionable top 6.

once the Leafs brain trust gave him top 6 time he did great tho. Dunno, I'm really liking the idea of having that speed on our top 6 here, we'll need it to force the pace of games.

That's a reasonable take, but I'd want someone with a longer track record at that salary.  Wouldn't be the first time someone had a career year before they hit UFA, and regression could easily mean 15 goals or so per year.  I think he'll get that contract from someone but I'd prefer if it wasn't us.

as long as he didn't cost more than Garland I'm OK with it. As @aGENT pointed out we could get assets back moving Garland and replace him with Mikheyev.
