Love to see hockey growing in new markets.

About ten years ago one of my friends took his son to Canada trying to get him some playing time in one of the Junior leagues.

It didn't work out, big reason was kids in your country grow up with a stick in the hands.

He didn't get a chance to play until his early teens.

Hopefully this changes things albeit slowly.

Gives kids something to aspire to.

Yeah, culture makes a big difference to be sure. Not only do we start 'em young, but they have a high level of competition to face off against to improve quickly.

I find the name pretty amusing. The National Hockey Super League. Watch out National Hockey League, you aren't the best in the world anymore.

Nobody here or anyone else is claiming that.

They wouldn't able to call their league the NHL due to copyright.

No doubt the players in this league can only dream of playing in the NHL.

It's great for us hockey fans here in Aus to see the game we love grow, and see our best players get paid a little money to play the game they love.

Obviously. It's a joke.

Have to wonder if Paul Kariya was able to compete in the Nagano Winter Olympics; whether him being half-Japanese might've spurred alot of interest in Japan in the sport?  Course Gary Suter's headshot to Kariya prevented him from playing.  (Might've cost us the Gold medal as well).  Kariya wasn't just an average player but an allstar.

He did play for Canada in the 1994 and 2002 Olympics, so I suspect he wouldn't have been allowed to play for both Canada and Japan in varying Olympics. Still, you're probably right in that it could have an effect on the growth of the sport there.

It's like beer league over here buts they call it supper down under.

I joke too.

Much better than our beer leagues; they're getting paid!

Now that you've got the league, make it like Aussie Rules Football, it's a natural combination.

And, Congratulations!  Any time anywhere you get to play or watch hockey is a good thing.

Yes I played the equivalent of drop in hockey before the pandemic, skate a lot.

This league was based in South Australia, I live in Melbourne, hopefully we will have a team or 2 next year.

It's actually not bad hockey to watch.

A few naturally talented athletes.

A few Canadian ex- pats.

Any hockey is good hockey.

Peter Nedved actually did but he's a special case.  Nedved defected to Canada (this was during the actual cold war days) & played for Team Canada one Olympics.  Later, he played for Team Czech Republic in the 2014 Olympics.
