[Trade] Lightning trade Ryan McDonagh to Predators for Philippe Myers, Grant Mismash

I don't think so.  They haven't been very good defensively and McDonagh should help.

Wouldn't be surprised if Ekholm goes back to playing with Josi and Fabbro drops to the 3rd pairing or they could use Fabbro as trade chip.  They seem high on Carrier but Fabbro might not be top-4 material, but he is a RHD and still fairly young so he could have trade value.

They are concerned about their 2nd line.  They just didn't have much scoring from that line.  I think they would like more proven/veteran players for that line but I am not sure they would part with high draft picks key prospects.  Younger guys like Kunin, Tolvanen could be available though.

just wondering, there was a lot of talk of moving him last year and this would make it more possible

Yeah touché, people can collect tweets and read hero charts but it's no substitute for actually knowing hockey.

There's a whole range between "all in" and "full tank".  They've just made their team better while not giving up anything of their future.

Not every team wants to tear everything down and miss the playoffs.  There is still a way to compete while not giving up picks/prospects and still trying to get younger. By the sound of it Vancouver wants to do something similar.

They gave up 4 years of a not insignificant amount of cap-space as well as a roster spot that'll be likely 20min +/- per night.

I know some won't view that as giving anything up but some would.  Imagine what Allvin/Jr could do with that cap space right now.

Poile shot those rumours down saying he's not looking to trade him but to extend him.  He accepted a 4 year extension.  Not sure they would have retained him if he wanted longer.

well, they are certainly set on the left side, and it didn't cost them any valuable assets. Looks like a solid move to me.

There is more then one way to skin a cat as they say. One thing is certain though GM's want to win and they are like politicians. Their word to the public is pretty much platitudes and truth for now until they do something completely different to try to win. Hockey shelf life is short. Teams change direction rapidly all the time and without warning.

They don't seem to have someone coming up from the system for those minutes.  For Poile it takes at least 4 years to develop Ds.  Carrier is now a top-4 for them but he went through waivers twice before being ready to make the team.

I wonder if they are not looking to be a bit more aggressive with the change of ownership.  They might also now have enough intel on some of their young players to know if they will be part of their contending team - Tolvanen, Fabbro, Kunin are coming at a stage where they have to decide whether they commit to them or move on.

Wow Tampa just cleared enough cap space to sign both Palat and Rutta.  However, they've created a big hole on D.  Wonder who they are going to target in free agency?

I read the guys name as Mishmash.

I thought you just didn’t wanna spell his real last name cause it was too confusing.

Amazing that teams keep helping out the Lightning though. That’s a big piece of their success gone. Not sure who they replace him

with.

Sergachev will step up that’s their plan.

mismash is a great name haha

like we helped them by taking jt miller off their hands hehehe

That's why you listen to what they say and see if their actions match their words and how much they bend things.  Some GMs change their minds with the wind while others have a plan and stick to it.   They all have different ways of doing business and personalities.  Social media has also changed communication - they can't as easily get away with anything anymore.  All those podcasts and interviews are available - you can easily go back and verify if things align.  That was not really possible just a few years ago.

No GM is going to disclose his full plan but they can give a general direction - that's what Rutherford has been doing ever since joining Vancouver.  For example, we know that he wants to get younger, talks of needing more skating speed and wants to add sandpaper and open up cap space and won't trade his 1st round pick.  Now it's wait and see on what they'll do.

Poile announced a competitive rebuild and went on to trade Ellis - who was a considerably better player than Glass and Myers.  He also traded Arvidsson for a 2nd and a 3rd.  He then went on to extend Ekholm to a 4 year contract so he had to explain that it's more of a competitive transition.  They aren't going to move on from having veterans and still want to compete while also bringing in youth.  Prospects and picks have to develop and it takes time.

That's the challenge for teams who are caught in the middle. Not all players just want to wait around as picks/prospects develop and not every owner can accept missing the playoffs.  It seems like they want to compromise and remain somewhat competitive while not hurting their future.  The Canucks look to be going down a similar path.

With Nashville have to see what this change of ownership does.
