Zadorov played great because Sutter put him in a role that didn't make him see big competition or highly skilled forwards. He played simple, physical, and skated well with Gudbranson.

Once Tanev got injured in the Edmonton series, Zadorov was elevated and he struggled mightily against top six competition and was a regular culprit when McDavid and Draisaitl torched the Flames. I don't think Zadorov would fit our system if he is in the top 4. If he is a bottom pairing guy perhaps, but asking any more of him than a 5-6dman is asking for trouble.

Agreed

Canucks can't afford to be paying Zadorov close to 4 mil per to play 3rd pairing minutes.

It is important to note that in our system, Whoever is the partner for Hughes only plays 15-17 minutes a night  and gets fairly easy 5v5 minutes.

Someone who can play a simple defensive game and be a physical babysitter for Hughes is what we need.

If we could move Myers, Zadorov would be a fine pick up to fit any of our LD guys.  He isn’t the only answer though as we still need a full shut down shot suppression pairing that guys like Edler, Tanev, and Stecher were excellent at.  If they have pencilled Rathbone into the lineup, they don’t plan on having that sort of pairing.

You're right that Hughes partner doesn't need to play huge minutes with him at even strength. That just makes me wonder though, is it really worth it to pay a premium for Hughes defense partner or would that money be better allocated elsewhere on the Canucks roster?

$4 million isn’t at all a big premium to pay… that is the price for a #4-5 guy and. It a top pairing one.  We could only make that move if we moved on from Myers which would net a couple million extra in cap space compared with now.  A couple $4 million guys vs. Myers and Poolman eating up more than that would just be shuffling dollars around for better fits.

We can’t rely on finding a bunch of Schenn players to fill that role on all three pairings.  He should really be Rathbone’s partner at this point if we want more success.

Benning just needed to wait one more offseason.... but NOPE

… or do what he did a year earlier when it meant keeping the momentum from the bubble team going.

Add OEL and Garland with keeping Tanev and Toffoli and the team likely doesn’t take a big step back.

…. the only time it didn’t make sense to get out from under those contracts is exactly when he did it.

It's really interesting to see how his mind works/doesn't work.
