[Trade] Penguins trade John Marino to Devils for Ty Smith, 2023 3rd-round pick

They want to make the post-season.  Nemec has no NHL experience and probably isn't ready yet to make much of an impact.  Past Hamilton, Severson and Siegenthaler their Ds were not really NHL calibre just yet.  Adding Marino gives more time for a prospect to develop rather than have him play too high in the lineup and hurt their chances of getting into the post-season.

Goaltending is still a big question mark - they can't go with the D-corps they had last season.  Not sure they will want to remove Severson just yet.

Graves is quite good and Ty Smith regressed a little but they have a decent d core

Perhaps we have different perceptions of Severson but he is a very good defensive dman. I'm not sure why being a puck mover is mutually exclusive from being good in their own zone. Tanev was very much both when he was on this team. As far as the UFA status next year, so is Miller.

He’s not a very good defensive defenseman though.

And at 28 might only have 4 prime years left.

Id rather get a young forward from them over Severson. Look at how much Marino cost. We can get a player like him in the future without giving up our best player.

Could you imagine if we trade Miller for Severson + (still thinking Sharangovic) and then move Myers, Pearson for cap relief to sign Klingberg?

Hughes Severson

OEL Klingberg

Rathbone Schenn

That would be D core that could potentially compete with the best out there.

2.5m Poolboy in the press box. Brutal.

What if they offered Severson and a 1st?

Severson had defensive deficiencies early in his career, but I think you're underrating him in that regard currently.

He keeps getting better. There is a good chance he cracks 50 points soon, especially if he comes here.

Severson is a Western Canadian kid, who played for the Kelowna Rockets. He might be interested in a long-term deal in Vancouver, playing with Hughes and OEL. More so than sharing minutes with Hamilton in New Jersey. Could see something brewing there, if Jersey was willing to add enough.

You’d think if management were all in on Marino they could have made it happen somehow.

One would think that Hogs + 3rd would do.  I can't believe Pitts would sell Marino for such a low return.

And we subtract 90-100 points from our roster.

Not enough of a long term value for me. It’s gotta be a younger piece. This team just isn’t close enough to be targeting 28 year olds.

That would certainly shut up those of us that are getting impatient, especially with word out there that Klingberg may be a better deal than some folks have been surmising.

Kuzmenko-Petterson-Boeser
Podkolzin-Horvat-Garland
Mikheyev-Dickenson-Hoglander
Pearson-Lazar-Cheap veteran UFA on 1 year $1 million
Joshua

Hughes-Severson
OEL-Klingberg
Rathbone-Schenn
Dermott-Burroughs

You get two decent PK duos in Mikheyev/Dickenson and Pearson/Lazar, which we haven't had for a while.

No real shut down D pairing, but three pairings that can be put out with a decent level of confidence.

Potential decent level of offence to be able to roll four lines.

Ya I have to think One if Marino or Severson in play here to trade with us.

Interestingly, Ty Smith was 7th in Calder voting in 2020-21, and Hoglander was right behind him at 8th. I'm guessing though that they wanted a Severson replacement more than another winger.

It's the details that are hurting them.  Fitzgerald talked of their defence in his end of season presser at the 7:40 mark:

Severson is going to need a big raise. Moving him in the deal and replacing him with the cheaper Marino might free up the cap room for a Miller extension. The pieces seem to fit.

Acquiring those two screams of a Burns/Karlsson duo that hamstrings this team for a long time.

They would have just done a 3 way trade. Marino isn't coming here.

Agreed. Wouldn't be surprised if they try to move Severson now though (there were already rumors of him being on the block at the end of last season).
