[Signing] Devils re-sign Jonas Siegenthaler

Don't see any team paying their 3rd pairing D that kind of money.  Luke Hughes is expected to be a top-4 D and to sign at the end of this season, and they already have Siegenthaler for the tough matchups.

OEL would be the top pairing dman on New Jersey, come on now.

Yes Siegenthaler is underrated amongst general fans, but New Jersey had 63 points last season with their suspect defense and goaltending.

They clearly need a lot of help everywhere in the lineup.

NJD doesn't have that kind of cap space.

Why would NJD even want OEL - they have Siegenthaler who is one of the best defensive D in the game at an extremely reasonable cap hit.

Then we can give them Ferland to create LTIR cap space.

:bigblush:

Siegenthaler is better than OEL defensively.  He's one of the best defensive Ds in the game and a legit top-4 D.  Luke Hughes is projected to be a top-4 D.

They are young and the future of NJD.  OEL will drop to their 3rd pairing.

I think they would want to get out from under Severson's cap hit. I wonder if a Pearson, for playoff experience,  and a potential pp specialist in a prospect like Rathbone would do it. Add another forward prospect maybe.

Rathbone is not NHL proven.

Media there certainly believes that NJD intends to keep Severson this season - they are giving their thumbs up to Fitzgerald for ticking off 1 of their off-season priority.  He listed improving the D-corps and did just that.

Nemec is expected to go to the AHL.  Removing Severson creates a hole on the right side.  Severson fits well because he's proven and only has this 1 year left.

Absolutely zero chance that it would happen this year. What are you talking about, five years from now?

Luke Hughes isn't on the team yet but is expected to sign at the end of the season.   Wheeler ranks him the 2nd best prospect behind Owen Power.  Quinn Hughes jumped right into a top-4 role.  Who knows how he adjusts but the expectation is that it won't take him 5 years to claim a top-4 spot.

Siegenthaler is already a top-4 D and one of the best defensive Ds around the league.  Ruff always talks of how he takes care of things for them - he's been their steady D that plays in the toughest defensive situations and excelled at it.  Both Hughes and Siegenthaler should continue to get better while OEL is going to start to slip as ages catches up.

OEL would fit perfectly into their top pairing with Hamilton.  Gives Luke Hughes a few years before he is counted on for top pairing minutes.  New Jersey is one of the few teams that has the cap space for OEL long term and he fits a need they have as well.  If they move Severson then they will have millions in cap space next year and most of their young players are all locked up long term.

I would do that deal in a heartbeat.  It helps both teams.  Would OEL waive for New Jersey?

NJ is the ideal trade partner for the Canucks but Fitz seems to be a very patient GM, that knows the values of his player.  Imo, he sold high on Smith for Marino.

Slowly, he is building a solid young team but there goalie situation is the one area, that needs to get sorted out.  Irregardless, on paper they seem ready to compete with alot of good piece, for next season but his overall record with that team is still mediocre - hence, the top 5 picks; and we had seen the game is played on the ice & not on paper.  At this point, NJ is still a young team, that has not learned how to win...

Fitzgerald took advantage of their cap space with Pittsburgh wanting cap relief.  Smith was very poor last season.

Their goalie situation isn't resolved and they could be paying too much in a trade that could backfire because of how they are set up in goal - more the reason to be prudent.

NJD also no longer has all that much cap space.  They have to extend Bratt who just had a 73pt season and they took Miles Wood to arbitration.  They are trying to sign Bratt long term with Fitzgerald listing ownership's involvement given the cap commitment (ie will use up a large chunk of their cap space).  If they go through arbitration Wood is going to get at least 3M and they can't walk away from the award as it's team elected.

OEL to NJD is silly, I agree. But not as silly as claiming he'd be a 3rd pair D there. That's ridiculous.

NJD are building towards their competitive window.  OEL would initially be in the top-4 but slide down to the 3rd pairing before his contract is over.

Luke Hughes and Siegenthaler are their young upcoming Ds on the left.  Hughes isn't even signed yet but how long until he's a top-4.  Quinn stepped right into the top-4.   Siegenthaler already is a top-4 D and only getting better.

Nothing against Sieg, he's a great defensive D and I agree, signed to a good hit (overpayment?!...WTF people?). But OEL would not be a "3rd pair D" there now, or likely ever in his contract.

Regardless, they in no way will be trading for OEL anyway (nor should we be moving him), so it's a moot point.

We'll have to agree to strongly disagree on this one.  ;)

A good GM, understands when to turn the page from acquiring assets on the top of the draft and when to make a run with the young core.   So far, NJ is a medicore team with good pieces

..
