[PROPOSAL] Clear cap space and be in the top echelon of league

Recommended Posts

We keep hearing from Alvin and Rutherford they can clear up cap space if they were to give up picks, but they don't want to due to our prospect pool being depleted.  I agree our prospect pool has been depleted.  However, I also feel our window is not as far as people say it is if we keep JT Miller. We can try being like the LA Rams at least for one year.   My proposal:

Trade:

Tanner Pearson: $3,250,000

Dickinson:           $2,650,000

Travis Dermott:   $1,500,000

Tucker Poolman: $2,500,000

Total:                   $9,900,000

2nd round pick 2024 (or 1st if we need to lottery protected).  That may not be enough and we may need to give up a first and second.  We may need this to be 2023 which would be brutal but still worth it based on our lineup.  Would be ideal if only a second can get this done.  Or a second and third.

To Arizona or Chicago for future considerations

Sign JT Miller for $8.85X 6 yrs

Sign John Klingberg for $6-6.5M

Do we want to give up picks:  Of course not.  However, the situation we are in is due to previous management.   However, this would be one more year of no prospects, but with this lineup a good 4-5 year contender.    With this lineup we would have top 5 forward depth, top 5 defensive depth and top 5 goalie depth. We would have a legitimate #1 D (Hughes), legitimate #2 D (Klingberg), #3 D OEL, legitimate #4D, Myers.  Three strong Centres in Miller, Petterson and Horvat.  One of the best goalies.  Strong wingers.

Garland Miller Boeser

Mikheyev Pettersson Podz

Kuzmenko Horvat Hoglander

Joshua Lazar Lockwood

Hughes Klingberg

OEL Myers

Rathbone Schenn

We would expect a much better year from Boeser, a full year of Petterson being elite, JT Miller continuing to be elite.  We've added Mikhyev, Lazar and Kuzmenko along with Klingberg (in this proposal).  We are significantly better than last year and we were already a playoff team under Boudreau.  We were already one of the best 5v5 teams (under Boudreau); our penalty kill will be signicantly improved and powerplay would also be strong.

This is as close to a contender if not a contender.  We have a significant amount of puck moving defenseman which speaks to what Rutherford mentioned of Canucks last year being one of the worst in the league.    The only weakness is maybe not enough stay at home defenseman, however, the best defence is offense.   We've added speed and sandpaper to the lineup

Also, we have had 1st and second round picks that have not worked so there is never a guarantee.  See Virtanen, Juolevi, Kole Lind, Gadjovick, Hunter Shinkaruk, Woo (at this time), Gaunce, Mallet, Jensen in rthe last 10 years and many more from previous years (Schroeder, Hodgson, White etc etc) .  Worst case if we really would want to get a pick, i'm sure we can trade Hoglander for a second at some point as we have a breadth of wingers.

You’re not dumping $9.9m though. You’re trying to dump $20.9m of cap spread over 3 seasons.  Plus all the contracts with term are back loaded and cost more in real dollars than the cap hits. So essentially the opposite of the kind of contacts teams look to take on.

Not only that, but that’s 4 roster spots that will block their young up and coming players.

i dont see Arizona being interests at all. And if they are It’ll take a lot more than you’re suggesting for Arizona to take that on.

1. Dermott isn't going anywhere, this management group traded a 3rd round pick for him. He's a cheap, young, versatile defenseman (RHD or LHD) who can play both sides. He's a solid 3rd pairing mobile defenseman with 2nd pair upside. If you get rid of him, you need another defenseman to take his spot, which means dermott is costing us about 700k above a league minimum (read AHL) RHD.

2. You're not getting rid of 10m in cap by giving up a 1st round pick. You'd probably need to give up 2-3 1st round picks to unload that much. Remember - Vegas had a ppg player in Pacioretty and had to give him up for free.

3. Why waste assets trying to trade Dickinson, when we could just buy him out instead? His contract is pretty buyout friendly, his cap hit would be around 1m. Better yet - lets see if he bounces back next year before giving up things to dump him.

4. There's a chance poolman is going to be permanently on LTIR (cap issue solved), and if he isn't, he's a perfectly serviceable bottom pair defensive RHD who can shelter Rathbone.

5. Pretty sure Miller wants more than 6 years, or an extension would be done already.

6. Klingberg aint signing anywhere for 6m / who do we play him with, our defense is a defensive disaster.

#1, Pearson is extremely tradable if we want to trade him. He's a consistent .5 point per game guy who shows up every shift and does exactly what the coach asks him. Defensively responsible and trusted on the ice late in games. His contract is about 750k below league value for similar player.

#2. Dickinson has been an impact player everywhere he's gone, except this first season in Vancouver where we had a REALLY rough start across all players, not just Dickinson. I'd rather keep him and give him a chance to bounce back as he was looking better in his last 10 - 15 games. If he gets back to being the guy he was in Dallas, we are good value in his contract. If not, we can easily waive him.

#3. Dermott is good depth value on his contract, has good upside. Unless we need to package him to balance cap with another move, I'd keep him, you need those depth guys to be successful in the NHL

#4. Poolman was dealing this migraines (possibly due to concussions) for much of last season and as such, is not a tradable player until we find out if he's going to just spend more months on LTIR. We won't really know until he hits the ice in camp and see if he can perform.

If Miller wants to be an 8.85 million cap hit, personally, I'd trade him, and once Kadri signs, there will be teams in the east looking to upgrade their offense to keep pace with Florida and a few other teams.

If we move Miller for help on Right D, don't be surprised if we move Myers and sign Klingberg if he's still available. Myers gives us better size and strength on the blueline, so we won't move him until we know for sure that we have options in place to replace him. If we put Myers on the market, there will be takers.

Other than Right D, we are in a much better position as a team than most fans think / realize. We will have a better start this next season and likely won't wait until 2/3rds through the season before Pettersson kicks into gear and gets clear of injuries.

Prices right now are simply too crazy.  Apparently the Islanders or someone wanted Myers, so I'd like to see if we could still find a taker for him somehow.
If we can even flip him for a team needing an RHD and get a late round pick and hopefully move Pearson without adding sweeteners, then we can at least stomach keeping Dickinson and Poolman or buy them out (each would be around $1 mil in cap space).  No need to act out of desperation and just sell them all when that clearly won't be cheap.  Maybe OEL can also talk Klingberg into signing for a discount, then that would be a great pair to have (OEL - Klingberg, then Hughes - Schenn as top-4).

Just only Dickinson off our hands for a 3rd pick at max and i call it a successfull offseason...
Pearson could be usefull

Dermott is good.

so in order of needs, we have to get ride off :
Dickinson > Poolman > Pearson.

Dickinson with Dermott as a sweetener could be good package tho and save a pick.
