The guy injured his knee, then his back, then had two serious surgeries, then had chronic hip issues.

Injuries derailed his career, it's really not that hard to explain.

Def was a huge factor and his video game addiction probably grew while injured.

It's a terrible pick given there were good forwards and defencemen who can play defence available.  There's very little chance of ASP ever learning how to play defence well enough to have any place on a legit NHL roster.  You can't fix a guy who is that much of a liability.

I can agree that there are forwards available, but Yzerman probably chose positional needs after moving Hronek. I'm not sure who they would draft at D over ASP at that spot. I don't think there was another D discussed much aside from Reinbacher, Simashev, Willander and ASP?

It's way too early to predict he's a bust in my opinion. I'm sure there'll be a Willander vs ASP thread opened and we can continue to discuss there lol.

I would be more upset with the first pick if I'm a wings fan.

Juolevi was a consensus top 10 pick and was projected to be very similar to Willander in terms of type of defenseman.

Let’s just hope that Willy has a work ethic and a level of dedication that OJ never displayed.

OJ’s lack of skating killed him. TW is already a superb skater.

And by all accounts TW is a very dedicated athlete.  Opting to goto BOS U illustrates that.

No trades no nothing, not even Friedman with some table to table talks speculation

yea.. im fine with the pick

but

not great that we're going into ufa with 9m of cap space (given that pearson is coming back, and assuming poolman rides ltir)

still need 2x defensemen and a 3c

not great

Takes time to undo a bunch of poor mistakes. Starting with the painful OEL buyout. We have no choice but to just hope we're on the right track with this retool.

Good pick. Michkov & Bonk is a nice haul

Maybe, but Bonk is probably a 2nd pairing D at best and Michkov might not show up. Time will tell. I thought Briere would want to bring Philly some nasty snarl and size up front, but I guess not.

Bonk went shortly after and isn't a massive liability in his own zone.
