I was at the game. The atmosphere was incredible. Abbotsford has fully embraced the Canucks

So glad that the city is proving that they will embrace a Vancouver-based AHL team.

I hope he challenges for the 3rd line centre position.  That would solve so many problems and not costs whole lot of money.  I think Hoglander makes the team next year, he's come so far developmentally from where he was and he plays a solid 200 foot game now.  Rathbone might be the one that got away and he's not even gone yet.  When the Canucks signed Hiroshi the writing was on the wall for Rathbone.  There will be competition for the 3rd pairing LD assuming OEL can't get moved.

Think from reading all the comments, the best thing is, that we actually seem to have some talent coming through.
It definitely sounds as if we have ready made replacements ready for several positions on the big team.
And impressive showing from Max... surprised as he seemed to slipped some what under the radar, while talking about all the other prospects. Nice surprise.

From what I was on TV I would say Juulsen did well for a guy playing his first game after a fairly long injury layoff.

I would say Woo was very good. He played a lot of tough minutes and played very well.

Rathbone had a nice goal but he also had a couple of giveaways and made a suicide pass to Sasson that could have ended worse than it did.

The guy who really impressed me was Wolanin. He made excellent plays on two of the Canuck goals and looked suprisingly good for a guy coming back from injury.

I think the depth chart at RD looks like this.

1. Hronek

2. Bear

3. Myers

4. Johanssen

5. Juulsen

6. Woo

7. McWard

This assumes Poolman remains on LTIR.

Juulsen is not yet re-signed for next year.

Brady Keeper is also an unsigned UFA but I doubt if he is in the Canuck plans goin forward.

I think that if Myers is traded, as many people expect, and if no-one else at RD is added, two of Johanssen, Juulsen and Woo will make the team.

I really hope Woo takes that next step.

I am big believer in prioritizing prospects over UFA guys. Woo has been cooking for 5 years now and is looking like a possible #6 guy.

Id love to see next year:

Hughes/Johansson

Wolanin/Hronek

OEL/Woo

Brisebois

Hirose with a year in AHL as the #1 defenseman and first call up option.

Yup. Woo either makes the big club or we lose him to waivers. He’s too young, tough, and still has upside for another team to not pluck him.

I think woo will be an NHL dman, but Juulsen would be ahead of him on the depth chart, imo.

The waiver exemption was the reason Hogz was not recalled to Vancouver (one more NHL game and he would have lost his waiver exempt status). But that is not why he was sent down. He was sent down because he wasn't playing well and the decision was that he needed more development. Also, reading between the lines of what was said at various times, it seem pretty clear that the fact that Colliton is a very good developmental coach who ran a tight ship in Abby while JR and PA did not like the approach taken by Bruce was important.

That was part of it definitely, but the timing was waiver related, imo.

Both played so well down the stretch, wonder if they want to reward Martin due to his seniority in the AHL but also reward Silovs for playing such a pivotal role between November to February for the team. Would be great experience for Arturs to to play high stakes hockey.

Doesn't get much higher than playing for Latvia at the Worlds in a must win game to ensure continuance in the first tier

While I think Silovs could definitely play as a backup to Demko, I still don't see what the point of him.watvhing from the bench for 60ish games would be, when he could be starting 50ish games in Abby.  The kid is only 21, he needs starts

Went to the game last night, Hoglander was absolutely dominant. An NHLer clearly. Me & my friends were surprised he only got 3rd star instead of 1st.

I thought Klimovich had some moments aswell.

Yup, Hogz is well above the AHL.........that was probably his most dominant game of the season, in a (half) season of dominant games

I thought both Klim and Raty both had quietly good games in their limited mins.  It's easy to forget they're the youngest guys on the team.

First time watching the Abbo Canucks last night - great performance and great atmosphere there !

Notes on prospects / players for me :

Wolanin - Class of the D - Composure, vision, skating is all there - has surpassed Rathboned and Woo for sure - Stood out even more than his time in show. Where he fits next year alongside the College FA's but I can really see him challenging for a spot with the big club.

Woo - Solid, Doesn't blow you away, but he is physical, solid defensively and 'adventurous' in the O Zone - kinda reminds me a bit of Myers there on his offensive adventures, which isn't always a bad thing - no Defensive Gaffs to match like the big lad tho.

Rathbone - Not a great night for Jack, despite the goal. His shot is a real weapon, but he was really fighting it at both ends. Big give away in the slot. Bakersfield are a big team as well and he noticeably struggled similar to a lot of his NHL games.

Hogz - best player on the ice - skill, pace, vision - just on another level.

Kid Line - Didn't get much ice time and didn't really stand out at all, Raty had a few good take aways, but then coughed the puck up in his own zone a few times too. Quiet night.

Sasson - Smart, hard working performance. right place right time for the goals - there's a player there

Martin - Back to looking solid and confident - Be interesting to see where he goes next year.

Final notes :
What stood out to me in the game here was the quality of the D and certainly was the difference maker + Hoglander. Which is good news given its weakness on the Vancouver team. I feel there could well be enough options with the players on the ice tonight + the college FA's to really put pressure on the 3rd or even some second pair guys. Can't see is overpaying for the likes of Bear given the options.

The other things that stood out was the size difference - Abby is a small team just like Vancouver - I always worry watching the NHL playoffs how were gonna compete against al the other big teams in our conference if we make the post season. Would love to see this addressed through the draft and not continuing to draft the lightweight smurfs.

This is a great summary and helps confirm some aspects of players moving along in their progression or stagnating.  Makes me start to think about the Canucks next year and who would be part of the equation.  Here are my thoughts based on how things are going:

-Wolanin and Hirose should be battling out the 3LD position for next year.  Both make the club but playing time is based on who is performing best.

-Woo could make the team as a 6/7/8 D and maybe along with Schenn play the defensive RD aspect of the third pair and rotate in and out together.  There will be competition with Johansson coming in too.

-Rathbone doesn't appear to progress quite to the consistent level we want him too, but may have value still.  I still believe we pair him with Myers in a trade for FCs

-Hogz is ready for the NHL again and should be someone like Joshua (Different player styles) that can play up and down the lineup as needed.

-Raty is a very strong prospect for us but needs another full year in the AHL as the 1C in Abby

-Sasson will be 23 for the next season and I think he starts as our 4C with Aman moving to 3C.  Raty competes the following year for a 2C/3C spot

-Martin had his day and I think even with this push won't be back.  NHL performance was not fully his fault, but I think the ship has sailed.  I think we sign a vet or move Silovs into the rotation as backup as he's close to ready.

Shutout for Martin, yet the crazy thing is that Silovs will start Friday.  Colliton has been adamant that he's alternating the two goalies

Truly, size really isn't a big factor anymore and were probably only a few years from the league being mostly under 6 feet.

Speed and quickness are the sought after attributes now.

There's really not much of a battle there.  Wolanin is the best dman in the AHL and has earned his spot in Van.  There's nothing left for him in Abby.
