[Proposal] What about Sam Gagner as 3C ?

Recommended Posts

Maybe a bit low in career Face off % at around 45% for his career for a checking center position.

The Canucks are pretty strapped for cap space right now, he is a right handed shot so he has that going for him. Interesting idea but I would probably not.

For now I'd rather look to a younger guy like Sam Steel or give Dickinson another go at it as he seemed decent under BB or experiment with Podz as a center.

Cbs No GIF by HULU

(Real answer: No. He was on the team a few years ago and played his way off the roster. The end of his tenure here was pretty rocky since Gagner refused to go to Utica and we had to "loan" Gagner to the Marlies, then rival of the Utica Comets. Canucks finally trade Gagner for Ryan Spooner only to have to buy out Spooner like 4 months later. Right now, the Canucks have a lot of forward depth. Dickinson, Joshua, Lazar, Miller, Petey, Horvat can all play C and they're all expected to be on the roster to start the season. Canucks should be looking to pick up a cheap d-man, not C right now, anyways).

Scouting report:

The son of former NHL forward Dave Gagner is long removed from the player who once registered EIGHT points in a game (in 2012). He still has good hands, very good offensive moves and vision in his mid-30s. Can help on both special teams. Lacks the overall game to earn major minutes. Smallish, he is also not physical and does not win a lot of puck battles. Can be useful as a mentor to younger forwards. ((https://sportsforecaster.com/nhl/p/16052/Sam_Gagner)

So, no, not as a 3rd line center anyways.

So he can mentor young forwards to loose puck battles, not be physical and lack overall game.

We have  5C - just depends on how we deploy them

Option A:

Miller

Petey

Horvat

Lazar / Dickinson

above gives us 3 offensive lines

--

Option B

Miller

Horvat

Dickinson

Lazar

--

only reason we may need another C is for our 2nd PP unit

because our first PP is stacked with Miller Petey Horvat , we need someone who can centre our 2nd unit- be offensive minded , win 50% plus of faceoffs and play on our PK

How about focussing on a right shot defenceman instead of a journeyman forward who, on his very best day, is no better than a third line centre. With Lazar and Dickinson, why would you think Gagner would be a good signing?

PK Subban?

As it sits, we already have too many forwards. If we did somehow move Dickinson and Miller got traded, we would need to fill that spot an in a pinch perhaps this could be a decent choice. I would expect Gagner to be able to muster up a reasonable amount of points alongside whoever we put down to the 3rd line, but he's not exactly a prototypical 3rd line center.

But, as Curmudgeon stated, forward depth is not where we need to be focused right now.
