[Proposal] Pearson+ for DeMelo

Recommended Posts

Pearson LW- 30yr old - 2yr 3.25m per left left

Mid round pick or a prospect

for

DeMelo RHD- 29yr old - 2yr 3m per left

Would be even better if Winnipeg took Poolman back, but I doubt it, so Pearson plus something may interest Winnipeg...???

Dylan DeMelo: Has always played to an identity. He’s a steady two-way defenceman who doesn’t produce much offensively, but is also a sound skater who can get to pucks ahead of opponents and outlet efficiently. There is nothing eye popping about his game and that’s a good thing. DeMelo is signed through 2023-24 with a cap hit of $3 million, which is money well spent for a defenceman who takes a responsible shift at even strength and is used on the penalty kill.

this team is in a win now mode with the miller signing, and I agree with that, I would push the chips in and try to get a fit with hughes, a R side D man

Offer:

Hogz

Rathbone

2024 1st

2025 2nd

could that get chyhcrun?

that could likely get Andrew Peeke - is he the d man we want?

who would be the other rich t shot d candidates?

That's an interesting proposal OP, and I think it could be mutually beneficial.

The Jets' downfall came from poor penalty killing (they were bottom-5 in the league last season just like us) and their bottom-6 wingers don't inspire much confidence outside Appleton (Barron/ Harkins are big depth without much skill, Vesalainen's big but not developed) so I think Pearson could be a strong upgrade to really flesh out their top-9 (Pearson-Lowry-Appleton looks good).  They've also got Pionk and Schmidt as their top-4 RHD (admittedly Pionk had an off year and DeMelo rose to be 1st pairing but they believe Pionk could rebound) so losing DeMelo won't be too much of a loss (they could flip one of Samberg/ Heinola from their LHD depth or something else to get a 3rd pair RHD).

For Vancouver, the obvious glaring need is at RHD.  DeMelo played 21 minutes a night two seasons ago (I think that was before Nate Schmidt arrived) so he's shown that he can definitely handle increased minutes.  He's also their top PK unit RD so we could find some balance between him, Myers and Schenn to split duties).  He also gives me Tanev-esque qualities that I think would make for a mobile, solid 1st pair.  Seeing how the team revamped the bottom-6 and still has candidates hankering for more minutes (Hoglander, Mikheyev on the PK) we can definitely afford to flip Pearson and let Hog expand his role.  If we don't sign De Haan to pair with Myers and bump OEL to 1st pair, I would be definitely open to this, and pair him with Hughes.

I like this trade idea.

I think WPG would be hesitant because Demelo is a key part of their D corps (even though he's probably on their 3rd pairing on 5v5). I wonder if this might work:

To VAN: Demelo + Kovacevic

To WPG: Pearson + Dermott

Pearson is a good middle 6 winger and Dermott gives them a decent 3rd pairing replacement for Demelo (younger and cheaper too).

Kovacevic is a 6'4", 208 lb, 25 year old RHD tweener with good AHL stats signed for 3 more seasons at $767k. Look like he could become a 3rd pairing RHD at NHL level.

VAN D this season becomes:

Hughes Demelo

OEL Myers

Rathbone Schenn

(Burroughs Poolman)

considering winnipeg only has 2 NHL calibre Right handed defenseman, i'm not sure they will be wanting to move off demelo. he had good chemistry with morrisey last year as well.

that said, they do need forward depth after shipping out copp last year and not really replacing him. pearson makes sense as a target for them but i dont think they would do it at the cost of demelo
