This game will be the last chance for hopefuls to impress JR&Co enough to consider keeping them up with the big club much longer.

As the AHL Canucks Abbotsford rink is not available until the 5th, cuts may possibly stay to practice in Vancouver on the 4th, but that's it.

Come the return match October 5th with Edmonton in Rogers Arena ABBOTSFORD CENTRE*, we may finally see the real Vancouver Canucks in preseason form, with only a few difficult decisions left to make.

Oilers Team Scope

Edmonton continues their preseason by entering what Head Coach Jay Woodcroft describes as the 'third phase' of Oilers Training Camp.

"Things are narrowing, so we're down to one group. I said to our players on the ice, every rep counts, every drill counts, everyday counts," Woodcroft said. "So far, we've been pleased with our level of competition. I thought we had a good game last night. Everyone came to the rink with mindset today to get better."

Fresh off a 3-2 shootout victory over the Jets in Winnipeg on Saturday, Edmonton reduced their camp roster by nine, assigning eight players to the Bakersfield Condors while placing Greg McKegg on waivers with the purpose of also sending him to the AHL.

The Oilers were backstopped by rising goaltender Stuart Skinner in the victory over Winnipeg, with the 23-year-old turning aside 33 of 35 shots in regulation and overtime while not allowing a Jets skater to score in the shootout. Offensively, Edmonton saw contribution from Tyler Benson, who potted the game's first goal high over the blocker of Connor Hellebuyck. Veteran defenceman Jason Demers, who is in camp on a PTO, tied the game late in the third on the powerplay after receiving a cross rink feed from Dylan Holloway.

After a frantic overtime, the game would go to the shootout where Devin Shore was the hero, scoring the only goal of the skills competition to send the Oilers back to Edmonton as victors. The win pushed the Oilers preseason record to 3-2 with a pair of games remaining against the Canucks and a Friday night contest against the Kraken to finish off the exhibition season.

Canucks Team Scope

The Canucks head to Edmonton looking for their first win of the preseason, having lost twice to both the Kraken and Flames in their first four games. 

Vancouver's most recent performance was a 4-0 shutout defeat in Seattle on Sunday. The Kraken were propelled by a pair of goals from Yanni Gourde, plus tallies by Alex Wennberg and Matty Beniers. Phillip Grubauer stopped all 17 Canucks shots he faced on the evening, while Canucks starter Thatcher Demko allowed three goals on 25 shots.

Vancouver started a fairly veteran lineup on Saturday with Bo Horvat, Tanner Pearson, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Tyler Myers, and JT Miller all dressing on the evening. 

The aforementioned Miller was the focal point of the Canucks offence last season, setting a career high in points with 99 (32G, 67A) -- 38 of which came on the powerplay. Quinn Hughes continued his ascent as one of the league's top offensive defenceman, finishing sixth in scoring among rearguards with 68 points (8G, 60A) in only 76 games. 

After the back-to-back games against the Oilers, the Canucks will wrap up their preseason at home against the Arizona Coyotes.

Not alot happening here yet so I’ll go first and say this is finally the game where everyone is gonna show up and we’ll get that ’important’ first win of the preseason.

Maybe they sign DeKeyser to help with depth.

 

Poolman isn't very good, even when he's healthy.

 

Rathbone isn't that good either IMO, but he's young and cheap and could fill a bottom pairing role with the right partner. Need to remember he was a 4th rounder, so forget about him being like Quinn.

 

Myers still struggles to clear the puck from the D-zone. 

 

 I don't get this new management group. They haven't fixed the main problem - the D.

RD: Mr. Rutherford, according to my analytics, Rathbone and Poolman could most likely hinder team success and it could overwork Demko over the course of the season. I'm not sure they can be relied on over 82 games. We need to possibly trade Garland or Boeser to bring in a Top 4 D.

 

JR: Young Rachel, we disagree with your assessment and believe in this group as it is, and with better coaching we think they can get into the post-season just fine. We're not trading any of our primo offense for D and I'm surprised you would consider that. You're fired.

her role was apparently converting analytics into more digestible terms for the coaching staff. I'm guessing she either couldn't do that adequately or it was discovered the role just wasn't needed because it's not like explaining rocket science to 5 year olds.

Sounds about right, I was joking around about what conversations they may have had. I thought Rutherford liked to make trades. Hmm.

Wolanin looks like he might get a longer look with his speed. Rathbone still needs to show he has pro level D and his confidence level seems a bit low from his good showing last year. Lazar and Joshua need to seal their spots on the 4th line esp their aggressiveness. Hogs is benefitting with Mickayev out and may be looking at 4th line duty when he gets back so he has to keep bringing it. I'd like to see Martin play. 

Burroughs needs to throw his hat in the ring as well. That toughness he brings is something we need. Our 6,7,8 D spots are far from settled.

I will want to see our team do well as a team when we go back home.  

 

I hope that we dress Aman, Karlsson, Wolanin, Juulsen, Arsenault, and a couple more fringe guys. 

 

It's a very good evaluation opportunity for our franchise.

It's a very good evaluation opportunity for our franchise. 

Ryan Johnson is very aware of his Abby team's talent level, assessing in Abbotsford and Vancouver. If they don't understand what kind of players they have yet, then that could be a problem IMO.

I am a little surprised to hear the negative talk about Rathbone. His last game wasn't his best but other than that I thought he has had a good camp.  His skating has been great and he is a very good passer and distributes the puck well. He looked good when he was playing with Schenn and expect that is where he will start the season.

again i don't care about win or lose i want to see effort.. i don't need to see the 100% full gas pedal effort coz it's preseason but i still wanna see 60-70% effort level.. last game or vets were mia or thought they were playing pond hockey

Well realistically, she shouldn't have had any input on player personnel as she simply isn't qualified to make that kind of assessment.  If she's going right to the top without talking to any of the actual hockey people first, that's pretty damn insolent.
