(Proposal) Horvat Gonzo

Recommended Posts

Alright. For what it's worth, I don't think we should trade Horvat. However, listening to all the talk shows and seeing all the reports come out.. there is a definite chance due to how our cap shakes out and with how Horvat's market value is. So, if we look at a trade.. I think management will be looking for a cornerstone RHD and also a younger centre that may project middle 6.

CAR:

Bo Horvat

Nils Hoglander

VAN:

Brett Pesce

Martin Necas

Aleksi Heimosalmi

I don't think Allvin will trade in conference or else ANA would be a great match with their D prospects. Horvat slots in right behind Aho as the perfect Staal replacement and gives Kotkaniemi protection to be sheltered against weaker competition. In this scenario, I see Hoglander also being someone who would be leaving just cause of the logjam up front and being the odd man out. A team like CAR likes Hoglander's player type being young and with upside.

For VAN, I think Pesce is a great pickup. 27, an all around player who does the little things right. He fits the window of "winning now" (evidenced by signing Mikheyev, Kuzmenko, Lazar) and more importantly is a top line RHD with him making $4.025 million until after next season. Necas is that upside 3C, brings the speed that we desperately need as well. Might need to be sheltered because his defensive game as a C isn't too strong. Heimosalmi is a top RHD prospect that CAR should include in my opinion because Horvat > Pesce.

Not a bad Proposal at all.

Id rather see what a Boeser trade would fetch with regards to RD players/ prospects.

With Petey looking more like a 1st line winger, 2nd line centre and the evolution of Podz I could see moving a RD like Boeser. Hate it because I love the guys character but Cap crunch is real

I like this one better than the last one but I don't think it'd work. If Pesce fits in with the window of "winning now" Carolina is better off keeping him. They've been a helluva lot closer than we have been for years. They almost made the conference final this past year, losing in game seven to the Rags. They made the conference final in 18-19 and lost to what was a better Bruins team than what exists now. The year before last they handily made the playoffs and had the misfortune or running into a juggernaut in Tampa in the second round.

As for Horvat, only eight teams scored more goals than the Hurricanes last season and they just added Burns for nothing. They also brought in a vet in Stastny for 1.5M, he put up 45 points last season. They were also the stingiest team in the league, having only given up 200 goals. As such it doesn't really make sense for them to mess with their defense and scoring goals hasn't really been an issue as they've made the playoffs each of the past four seasons.

Regardless of how such a trade presents for Vancouver I don't believe it makes a whole lot of sense for Carolina.

Like you said, they brought in Burns which is why Pesce “could” be available if presented with a Horvat deal. I think they need some solidification on their forwards. They are all good players but none of their stars have shown up in the playoffs. Horvat would be that guy that would push them over the top. Plus losing Pesce for them doesn’t make their defense worse off since their depth is insane (Burns, Slavin, de Haan, Skjei, Gardiner)

Even with term left on his deal, Burns is 37 years old. I don't imagine bringing him in makes Pesce expendable, top 4RD are incredibly valuable and Carolina ran like a well oiled machine last season. It doesn't make sense for them to mess with something that almost had them in the conference final imo more than they already have imo.

de Haan is depth, as far as I know Gardiner may never play again and expires after this season. If Carolina moves a D out it'll likely be Bear. I understand that Horvat would improve them down the middle but I'm more inclined to believe they'll simply let Kotkaniemi show what he can do given his draft pedigree and eight year deal.

If Carolina feels they won't be able to retain Pesce? Maybe that changes things a bit. But if they think he he'll be retained? Well, defense wins championships and they're a very stingy team defensively.

Nothing but the greatest respect for Horvat, both as a player and a man. He has given everything to be the player and leader he has become. That said, the massive commitment to JT Miller indicates clearly that management has decided Miller is worth more than Horvat, and that they probably can't afford the dollars Horvat probably deserves. I can see Horvat being traded, probably at the deadline when there would likely be a few teams willing to pay through the nose for such a solid player. I am still hopeful that Horvat will agree to terms with Vancouver, but he's going to want something starting with a 7 and I think management will think that's too rich for their budget.

But do you think they can seriously do damage in the East in the next couple years? With Tampa, Florida (much improved), even Toronto?, I see those teams better than them and Carolina not leapfrogging them anytime soon even with their upgrades. I think this has got to be the deal VAN looks for, because honestly there are not too many RHD that fit that upper echelon. Not hating on other proposals, but I would take Pesce easily over Severson, Peeke, Carlo, etc. And if they lose Pesce, they have Scott Morrow waiting in the NCAA.
