If you said yes how would you go about it? you cannot just add teams all on a level playing field unless we let the entire 32 play.

a qualifying round like in 2020?

a true double elimination bracket with all 32 teams? losers brackets play best of three's for scheduling reasons.

or how about  creating a modified double elimination bracket with 32 teams? you could have the top 16 teams be in the winners bracket and the bottom 16 teams be in the losers bracket.

winners bracket is best of 7 like normal, but the loser of each series in the winners bracket falls into the losers bracket instead of being eliminated.

it would not impact the schedule of the winners bracket and the benefit to this is that there will be more hockey and  a additional round.

losers bracket would look like this. they would play 5 rounds instead of 3 to make it to the conference final.

losers play within their bracket, losers plays losers of winners bracket, losers play within their bracket, losers plays losers of winners bracket, losers play within their bracket, losers plays losers of winners bracket. the last series would be the conference final and will be a 7 game series.

Yes > 4 more teams

4 Teams per division guaranteed in liu of 3 each year + same 2 Wildcards per conference = 20 teams.  All in top 4 get a full week off for making top 4.

Conference Wildcard Teams Play best of 3 series against each other on days 2/4/6 after regular season.

This leaves the regular field of 16

More exhausting road for wildcard teams. 4 more teams eliminated from lottery.

I like the NBA format of 7-8-9-10th place battle it out,  Even though regular season is suppose to be meaningful, it's still a long season and it's fitting the bubble team battle it out in the end.  The only reason i'd consider this for the NHL is because of that annoying OT/shutout loss dummy point.  Teams with more wins than 7-8th place can end up 9th-10th because of it.

Ultimately, hockey is such a physical sports and guys are already beaten up at the end, we can't add another round even  it's only a game or two.  Every sport you are at risk of injury when you play more game, however, hockey is different.  You can get hit by a puck and break something, you can be cut by a skate, you could fall awkwardly onto the ice or into the board, there are so much intangible that we can't add a layer.  Otherwise the best teams would never win, it would be the team that lucky and stays the most healthy that will.

I am likely in the minority here that thinks we should shrink the playoffs to best of 5 for the first 2 rounds. Way too many injuries in the playoffs, and that typically determines the winners. By the time the finals rolls around a lot of fans have checked out as they are now on a lake somewhere.

This is the NHL the bushest league in pro sport

the NHL loves the lottery, and so do most of their fans

82 game  regular season, or 1312 total games played

gives you 4 division winner who earn a by into the second round

and 4 division loser who earn a buy into early tee times, you know because this is professional sports and Pro sports need integerty

then take the top 12 teams of the 24 remaining and give them home ice in the first round

and take the bottom 12 remaining and put their names in a barrel and have Bill Daley draw matchups for the first round, because the NHL doesn't know how to spell integrity and because everyone love the lottery

after the first round you are left with 4 Division winners and 12 more teams and Bingo, Bango, Bongo you can have Roberto Luongo draw the the next round of matchups and you get 5 rounds of playoff hocky and a lottery at the beginning of each round!

hopefully Gary and Bill don't actually read this, or  you'll be right to ban me forever

Not only should they not expand the playoffs, they should shorten the regular season.

Scrap divisions, scrap conferences.  Every team plays every other team twice - once at home and once away.  With a 32 team league you'd have a 62 game regular season.  Top 16 teams go into the playoffs.

(And, yes, I know they'll never do this because of the loss of revenue.)
