It'd be worthwhile to take a closer look at Kaut.  He's only 23yo and a 1st round pick.

On the one hand scoring isn’t a problem for us and he probably has issues with his defensive game.

 

However this team doesn’t have enough in the pipeline for 23 and under players. 
 

Surely he could play as well defensively as some of our guys have?

I’d take Kaut AND Benson if they get to us tbh. Both have decent potential and would be nice adds for free.

Benson has shown what he is at the NHL level. I don’t see anything more than a journeyman AHLer.

 

Kaut on the other hand could potentially be one of those prototypical late blooming Euros. Would give us a scorer on a cheap contract to replace Garland or Boeser.

It strikes me as a little weird that the Avs (who are missing Lekhonen, Landeskog, Mackinnon, Nichushkin and Rodrigues, a.k.a. more than half their top-6/ top-9) would still choose to waive Kaut.  I'd say take a chance if he falls to us, but I wouldn't put that much hope in him (compared to a guy like Cates in Philly who gets top-line deployment with their slew of injuries).

It’s more likely that he has more value in a trade if he is in the minors.

 

Even if he’s a promising prospect teams might not see him as ready. And are not willing to give him a roster spot.

 

Getting him onto their farm team to continue development is likely much more appealing. 
 

Also let’s not forget Grabner went on waivers. Seems to me the team that claimed him did alright.

Yep. That would be good business there.

Kaut could be a good claim.

 

Especially if we’re considering moving Boeser, Garland, or both. Would be a good idea to look to add a cheaper, younger RH shot RW who might prove to be a longterm fit.

 

Kaut has good speed, good size, the upside and pedigree of a first round pick, can play a skill/offensive game with talented players, but also plays a solid 200ft, two-way game, and has shown the ability and willingness to be more of a role player as a mucker/puck retriever for his linemates. He’s also gotten stronger over the years and added some sandpaper to his game.

 

From a 2021 Avs report:

 

“Kaut will never be that flashy high skilled guy. That’s not his game. He is a guy who will round out any line he is on by doing the dirty work in the corners, backchecking hard, making the simple smart plays, and not dragging is line down. Kaut has the ability to play with high skill players. We saw at the WJC in Vancouver, he didn’t look out of place playing with Martin Necas. He can play up and down the line up.”

“I saw Kaut play a few games with the Eagles last year, and he’s a strong, powerful skater with good size. He’s got a good, hard shot. It seemed like he played with a little more snarl and sandpaper. With the Avalanche, the problem, as I’ve seen it, is that he’s not quite sure of what kind of style he’s supposed to play. Does he think he has to be a grinder, a checker, to stick with the big club? Or, does he think of himself as top-six material who just hasn’t gotten enough of a chance to prove that yet? No doubt, Kaut wants to utilize his shot and offensive instincts more. But it becomes a Catch-22 for guys like him after a while.”

might be a good pickup for the farm at least.

Gotta wonder how Czechs and Russians would mix right now. That would be my only concern.

 

I know these guys aren’t exactly tied to those issues as much but can’t ignore the fact that Czechs hate Russians with a passion.
