Report: NHL considering increasing regular season to 84 games

The NHL is considering increasing its regular-season schedule from 82 games to 84, sources told ESPN's Greg Wyshynski.

Under the current format, some teams play only three games against a divisional rival, while others play four. To round out the rest of the schedule, all teams play three contests against non-divisional squads residing in the same conference and two games against each opponent from the other conference.

By adding two more games into the mix, teams would then be able to take on their divisional opponents four times each in a season.

The idea of an 84-game schedule wasn't formally broached at the recent board of governors meeting, but it is expected to be discussed at the general managers' meeting in March, according to Wyshynski.

Sportico first reported on the NHL's consideration of a schedule shift earlier this week. General managers reportedly explored the topic in November with the goal of reducing travel, adding more games between local rivals, and ultimately bringing in more money across the league.

Better than adding another playoff round.

Way more exciting to add more playoff games.  Regular season is completely meaningless in sports.

A good idea I saw today was to restructure the schedule in a way that includes more rivalry games.  Apparently New Jersey doubles ticket sales when they play New York.  More Bruins-Habs games, more Battle of Alberta... I say that's all good for the league, and profitable.

Personally, I’m in favour of this. A few of my closest friends are die hard Oilers fans. We were very excited to go watch an Oilers/Canucks tilt in Vancouver together, only to find out that there is only one game in Vancity this year, which drove ticket prices through the roof (and they were already ridiculous to begin with). It’d be nice to have each division rival here twice.

Yes to more divisional games. No to more regular season games.

I would even eliminate the wild cards, eliminate the notion of conferences, and have 4 teams from each division make the playoffs.

Play 2 games against every non-divisional teams: 24 * 2 = 48 games.

Play 4 games against divisional teams: 7*4 = 28 games.

Play 76 regular season games.

The winners of each division are matched up based on their regular season record.

Scrap divisions.  Scrap conferences.  Each team plays every other team twice - once at home and once away.  In a 32 team league the season would be 62 games long.  Top sixteen teams get into the playoffs.

And they want to add two games to an 82 game season.    AAARGGHHH!!!

Great idea. The owners would never allow it. Too much revenue lost.

More exciting, except for the watering down the playoffs by adding another 4 or 8 teams.  I remember the old days, when teams with losing records made the playoffs regularly.  Blech.  Also, the players won't go for that, since they don't get paid for them. And the added intensity leads to more injuries, ones they are more likely to play through and carry over into the next season.

Nice in theory (along with reducing the schedule) but not too likely.

I do love the idea of more rivalry games.

They could keep it at 82 games and just exchange out a couple conference games to make the divisional ones even out at 4 each.  Please get rid of a Wild game off the schedule... I don't need any help falling asleep.
