Pettersson and McGinn make up the amount nicely along with some nice adds going back our way. I think we could be tossing a player like Burroughs back to ensure they have some cheap playoff D depth.
KoreanHockeyFan
I just want draft picks. Unless Carolina comes out of nowhere and gets Miller by giving up Morrow.

Certainly could drop a lot if they make and go on a run in the playoffs, but there are too many top teams in the East it likely won't drop too far down. Pitts currently listed as 18OA but playoffs play a major factor, so that could be anything at this point hence why they likely throw a few conditions on it. Even a couple mid-20's picks would be good as the draft is pretty deep. Depends what they do in the playoffs
RUPERTKBD
As I've already mentioned, it makes no sense for the pens to trade a guy like Guentzel. If they are trading for Miller, it's because they feel they can take another run at the Cup while Sid, Geno and Letang are still elite players. That means they hang on to a guy like JG. The trick is to clear Cap space for now, so they can take on a contract like Millsy's, but they won't move an integral part of the team to do it. They have about 13 million coming off the books next year and more the year after that. (although one assumes that they'll want to re-sign Guentzel and Sid) That being said, they're very much in "win now" mode, because that team is going to be a dumpster fire in a few years when the core ages out. they could very much be in a place where they take on Miller's contract and deal with the fallout later. There's also the fact that Pittsburgh is home for JT.... Edited March 1 by RUPERTKBD

Penguins clear Pettersson, McGinn and Zucker is a FA next year, so they have more than enough to take on Miller's contract. If the Nucks are taking a cap dump McGinn 2.75X2 and an overpaid LD Pettersson 4.025, they should be getting a far better return than that. They don't need the extra cap space for Miller this season, if the Canucks take Blueger 2.2 (along with the 2M for waiving McGinn + Friedman + Penns cap space + flipping Zucker). Zucker's $ can be applied to JT's new contract.
Kobayashi Maru
2 minutes ago, stawns said: Depends what they do in the playoffs Very true. There are a lot of variables with those picks, but luckily there are a lot of targets within the first round even later in the first round (Dragicevic, Cam Allen, Strbak etc). Mid rounders would be great, but certainly no guarantee.

To me, the basis is getting Pickering and another 1st (3 this year gives us so many options) and the Miller cap relief since he's not the right timeline. Pettersson can actually help our D (Wrong side, but maybe he can play with OEL on his offside) and is likely easy to move if needed for positive value. As long as the cap offset is short term like you mention, I think we are fine. Ultimately I am still fully in the trade Miller to Carolina camp, but this seems to have some legs. They are looking to make a big more because their team is struggling to separate themselves. They need all the help they can get. Adding an impact player while retaining Zucker is going to make for a more significant improvement vs adding but removing Zucker. They can still make the trade without flipping Zucker, but they would have to figure out what to do next season when Miller contract kicks in. I haven't looked at their cap space for next season. If they keep Zucker, they will have to re-sign him or let him walk at UFA. Imo, JT will put up much better #s then Zucker.

He would be much happier there, playing on a viable team with some great players. I think he gets frustrated playing on our rag tag team and must know that he won't see any playoffs for a few years. Now that it's become obvious that the Canucks are now rebuilding, JT just doesn't fit the timeline. The Pens just seem to be a far better fit for a variety of reasons. 1
RUPERTKBD
Looking at the Penguins' Cap situation, there aren't many options for the Canucks to take on a contract....Dumoulin looks like the obvious choice, but going by TOI, he appears to be their #4.... Jan Rutta might be a possibility. He's older at 32, but he's a RHD with another 2 years at a modest 2.75 mil....

Nope 2) can our PK improve? YUP 3) Can our goalies play better? YUP Just fixing a simple PK structure and getting better goaltending on the PK and in all situations, will lead to several more wins. Say what you want about D, our goalies have ultimately still sh*t the bed every game and let in minimum 1 bad goal. Our PK is going down in the history books and not for good reason either. Your best PKer is supposed to be your goalie… guess who hasnt been our best PKer? Our goalies. Our D is not contender material, but it sure as hell is good enough to compete for a playoff spot. It showed that last season. As soon as our goalies began to play better and then our PK got significantly better, we were one of the hottest teams in the NHL the final 57 games and thats not a fluke, thats 2/3 of a season. its been 2 consecutive seasons of poor goaltending for long stretches and a historically bad PK. 1

The PK will take some time to improve. The team as a whole does not play a defensive game. The team only has 1 top 4 dmen. 3. It really depends on how Demko does. It really depends on how Demko does. Can he stay healthy? Thats *if* Miller gets traded. Bo left and Kuzmenko was added this year. We’ve also had a plethora of players out all season with injury. We added scoring at the beginning of the season and moving Bo only dropped it down a bit mid season, but regardless we were ahead of the game in scoring day 1. I would argue OEL and Myers as a pair, is an effective pair. The stats have shown that all year. However the problem is they have been split up most of the season and taken on mentorship roles with guys like Stillman etc.

Throw that in as well as OEL's age likely means this isn't going to turn out well; but at this point, what choice have we got? A buyout just extends the problem (wasted cap) even longer. Another nice parting gift from Jim Benning. Thanks alot Mike Gillis. Cheers amigo. you kinda answered your own question there Unless Tocchet tells PA that we will go nowhere with OEL, I think we have to be prepared for him to stick around at least another year. Next year when Myers is gone, they may take the bull by the horns or find a decent rhd to play with OEL. If we strike it lucky and find a rhd that can play with OEL ( play well that is), we could maybe be fine with OEL as a second or even third pairing, but I have tempered expectations for that to happen.
