Would you trade Pettersson or Hughes along with a top 10 pick for the #1 overall?

The franchise for Bedard?

simple question.

hypothetically, would you make either of these deals? in this hypothetical, it is given that the team with the #1 would accept. in this hypothetical, assume no other pieces are involved. in this hypothetical, assume the canucks' original pick is between #5-10.

there's an argument to be made that this should be in the proposals forum, but my purpose is more philosophical than an actual trade proposal.

Hughes, yes. Pettersson no.

But if the other team insists on Pettersson, then I think I will do it at the end of the day.

That's our chance to get a generational player.

no both + a 1st probably wouldn't even get you bedard the way he's trending as good if not better than mcdavid. the team that wins the lottery will more than likely be a rebuildling team. they don't need 15mil in EP and Hughes + whatever it would cost to re-sign EP. they would be way better off with bedard and the extra 15mil of cap space.

i know i wouldn't take EP and Hughes + 1st and give up bedard.. any other year sure.. we are talking about a crosby/mcdavid generational type talent here.

what is there to read? your hypothetical is based on hypothetically assuming either one of the players have enough value to be traded for the 1st overall.. so if my opinion is neither player let alone both player + a 1st is enough then it doesn't matter who i would want to give up

If you are trading either of them you pretty much need to accompany it with a scorched earth rebuild.  As great as Bedard is trading Pettersson plus a top 10 pick doesn’t make a lot of sense as having two excellent players is better than a single generational one.  If we hit on the lottery this time great if we don’t let’s take a top pick and run with it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Bedard may be the only way this franchise isn't in store for another decade of pain. Bedard would at least be a glimmer of hope we could latch on to as a franchise. Right now, we have next to nothing to be excited about in the coming years.

If we got Bedard, Petey and Hughes together with vets like Miller and Horvat the cup might be available.

But trading away a piece of the puzzle just to search for that bit again seems stupid.

Petey
Hughes
Bedard

a 1st RD

and an injuriefree Demko

is the recipe for a cup.

Skip Petey or Hughes and we might only reach the Oilers…

I picked Hughes... but have changed my mind to either.  It is almost inconceivable at this point that Petterson would agree to extend with us after his contract is up. at least without significantly overpaying him.  That leaves trying to get a return for him in the offseason before he is just a rental.  No other deal involving a package gives us a better return than just Bedard.  The part that I don't like is sending our top ten pick along with that deal.

I don't see any path to becoming a good team in the next four years or so.  Starting all over with Bedard and a full scorched earth rebuild may be our fastest path.  If we could send either guy and another piece that isn't our top ten pick, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I wouldn't trade either. EP40 and Hughes are 2 foundational pieces. What would be the point of giving up a piece that would be a glaring hole in the lineup with Bedard in the lineup. We need 2 centers and a #1dman, Petey and Hughes are 2 of those pieces, Bedard would be an amazing add but I don't see how we fill the hole left behind trading either Petey or Hughes.

If we were to finish between 5-10, Pettersson would probably be the asking price. I dont know, I mean right now Pettersson is on pace for about 110 points, and could challenge Henrik’s all time season record.

There aren’t many players who can make guys around him better, play at a Selke level of defense, and put up points the way he’s been doing. One of the best young two way players in the game, I’d say he’s too important for this team specifically to be giving him up. Unfortunately, I’d pass.

However, say we win the 2nd/3rd overall pick, obviously I’d assume the asking price would be significantly less, and I’d be more than willing to give up Hughes in a package to move up to #1.
