The last GM the Canucks had who was competent beyond all doubt was Burke, although I didn't mind Nonis.

Burke turned the team into a playoff contender.  Bertuzzi incident ended his tenure. Nonis cleaned it up and got Lui.  Although i wonder if he ever was able to get Scott Neidermyer too. That would have been the biggest missing piece.

Gillis was fine, he gambled to get the cup, won two prez trophy.  But the drafting and development program wasn't great. He wasn't able to or allowed to retool/rebuild.

Just imagine MG had the foresight to hire a guy similar to Brackett. Just let him handle the drafting side and continue winning.

Boston went from the Cup in 2011, had maybe a couple rocky seasons. But they built a system to keep pumping young talent onto their roster.

They could've got Boeser, Barzal, Konecny in the 2015 draft. But thank god Sweeney was on crack at that particular draft.

MG did hire Brackett ! JB promoted him

You have to take your hat off to Boston and of course Cam Neely who has replaced both hs caoches and GM's

Gillis was actually our best GM by far, he implemented many programs to help players reach peak performance, had innovative sleeping programs and was the best in trades. He got Ehrhoff, Lapierre, Torres etc. Plus players like Sundin, Samuelsson, Hamhuis etc to build a contender. We could have won a cup with him if we didn't have injuries. He was a GM that could actually finish a team build and make it a contender just through smart trades and FA signings and also hiring a capologist and negotiating good deals. Obviously when you compete for the cup and win president trophies, you won't be drafting as good and frequently as bottom tier teams so his drafting should not be judged when we didn't have good picks to begin with. You either trade picks and prospects to win a cup or you tank and keep good picks and prospects and trade roster players for more of them. You can't be great in both, it's impossible unless you can keep getting gems in 6th or 7th rounds of the draft.

The difference is that Boston still has the core players from that 2011 run which also have cup winning experience and mentor their other players. They still have Bergeron, Krecji, Marchand, Carlo etc. From 2011 cup run. That's like Canucks still having Sedins and Kesler playing like they are on their prime plus having players like Miller, Kuzmenko, Pettersson, Hughes and Demko. Yeah if you add those 3 to our lineup we would probably be as good as Boston is right now.

Kuzmenko-Pettersson-Miller

Sedin-Sedin-Beauvillier

Boeser-Kesler-Garland

Joshua-Aman-Podklozin

Imagine that lol
