Fans need to put this tanking debate to rest, NHL's official director Bettman went on record saying no one tanks and tanking doesn't work. That's an official statement from the top of the NHL, I really hope people don't lose sight of authority and learn to trust words of their top brass if you don't have trust you have nothing. Bettman who is essentially the voice of the league said tanking doesn't exist, as far as we are concerned thats that, unless you actually think a top representative would lie to your face then you got bigger trust issues than the tanking debate.

Lou " we tried awfully hard to get the best odds for first overall"  which of course was Mathews.

Players and coaches don't "tank".   Their future and paycheques matter.   Sure Grier would love to trade EK.    Management for sure can put their team in a better position for high end drafts and picks.

The only way to stop tanking is to make it draft based on an average standings over a number of years with limitations on how many of the top 4 picks any team can have over a 4 year period.

They have to take the "one year tank" out of the equation. The lottery just make it worse with even more team tanking for an improved chance, tank for 20 or 30 games even a whole season but it is only one or two seasons is too easy even if not getting the 1rst overall. DFL may not get #1 but it does get #33 which is ne worse than the cup winner and subsequent rounds as well. On this draft #33 might still get an equivalent #18 in past drafts.

The lottery encourages tanking

Former Tankers (AKA Bad Teams):  Edmonton and Arizona

Do we really want to emulate these teams? Where has it gotten them?

Arizona will never be good because they don’t have the money to spend.

Not to mention they keep making poor picks like Strome, Domi, Perlini, Soderstrom, and Hayton. You can’t get good with drafting like that.

As for Edmonton they had every opportunity to be good but failure to sign and draft the right D men was their downfall. Instead they massively overpaid Nurse, signed Barrie, and traded for Keith. Drafted one dimensional D men like Bouchard and Broberg.

Doesn’t matter if you land a generational talent when your GM is making moves like those.

Who ever pays more money under table will get the first...
