Back before the days of Don Taylor, John Shorthouse and Dave Randorf as hosts, Richard Saxton was the host of CKVU's Sports Page.  That show hasn't been around for decades now but anyone who was around for the 80s and especially the 90s will probably remember the show and their highlights packages...it is what launched the careers of Taylor, Randorf, Shorthouse and others.

Anyway, after the 1982 run to the final, Saxton put together this 30 minute recap which includes coverage and interviews as it was all happening.  Has some good highlights and interviews and a few interesting facts are revealed.  For one, Tiger Williams says that this playoff run was the first time in his three years as a Canuck that the media actually cared enough to bring a news camera into the dressing room after a game.  Another is that Oh Henry sent each Canuck a box of chocolate bars because the old Flying V uniforms looked like the Oh Henry packaging.  And some other little bits of history will pop up here and there.

It's largely forgotten now but Game 1 of round 3 was one of the great playoff goaltending duels in Canuck history.  King Richard edged out Tony Esposito but they both stopped over 40 shots in the 2-1 Canuck win in double overtime.

Damn I only remember Barry Houlihan and Paul Carson from the early years of sports page.

Yeah it was in the early 90s that Sports Page really became the Sports Page people mostly remember...a sort of Kids in the Hall of sports coverage.

Thanks.

I lived every moment of every day during that run as a rabid fan.

No internet or anything like that back then; I would stay up until the midnight edition of the paper came out and then sit at Penny's devouring everything in that issue.

Donny on that late night show was a riot!

Yeah the Sports Page playoff beard competition among the hosts in 1994 was pretty good.  They all had pretty decent beards and then Shorthouse had nothing but some sort of billy goat thing on his neck under his chin.

Oh man the memories…Yulin’ with the Page was always freaking awesome.

The very last show with the empty desk in a dimly lit room brought tears to my eyes.

RIP CKVU.

The channel that did a little bit of it all.

And had the courage enough to experiment with content.

Local broadcasting led to some innovations or even novel programing and some downright weird stuff. (Tomorrow's Fortune?)

Only channel I know of that would broadcast Flash Gordon serials at 1am. And some borderline softcore porn (You'd probably call it European "Art" Films) but there was still

nudity. And no one got offended.

wow, great thread - brings back memories. I had forgot about Richard Saxton, but as soon as I read the name it was like "yeah!"

The nightly trivia question - as i recall, the long time sponsor of it was the Mountain Shadow Inn (pub?) in North Burnaby.

I remember CKVU, like many stations, would go off-air overnight. CKVU would start their morning programming just before 6am with the playing of the national anthem, and then a replay of the previous night Sports Page....

Yeah local channels back then had personality.  King 5 down in Seattle actually had its own Saturday Night Live type Sketch Show (Almost Live) that was pretty popular.

Don Taylor was so funny on that show.  He called the Hartford Whaler's the stinky whale one night and called the Mighty Ducks the Mighty Dykes another.  Tv was fun back then.

Thanks for the video

Yeah The King was like Trevor Linden, a real pressure player.  Specialized in the playoffs.  Richard Brodeur was the first ever Memorial Cup MVP trophy winner, won the WHA's Stanley Cup, got to the WHA final another time, and then of course the 1982 run to the final.  Also in his final year when we traded him at the deadline, he was brought in for the playoffs for the Hartford Whalers and won them a game against the Montreal Canadiens.  Not a bad way to go out when he was already written off and expected to go to the glue factory.

Statistically we have suffered more than we should.  No Cups in fiftysomething years, with many of those years in a league with 21 teams or substantially less than that.  Just going by averages we should have at least two Cups.

That said we didn't really get ripped off in 1982.  LA did is a favor and removed the Oilers from the equation.  Then we just took care of business and dominated everyone until the final.  We had a bit of bad luck losing the first game...and who knows what might have happened if we had won it.  Billy Smith got away with murder at times.  But all in all our luck was fair.

We really had to work against the system in 2011.  That Aaron Rome suspension was absolute garbage, especially when there was nothing for what happened to Raymond.  Boston got away with a lot...

But in 1994...  The league stuck it to us with that extra day of rest before Game 7 against the Rangers.  Other than that...it seemed like pretty fair treatment toward us.  Gary Roberts got called every time he ran Kirk McLean in round one.  Bure got away with the Churla elbow.
