(Speculation) Erik Karlsson watch

Recommended Posts

lol... when SJS went and trade that haul for Karlsson. They were taken years back. Went from being a playoff team to a team that doesn't even know what it is doing, probably won't see the playoffs again in the next 5 years and a team that had to dump Brent Burns for next to nothing.

NEVER touch these aged stars on retirement contracts, not even with a 10 feet stick.

A lesson we are seeing unfold with OEL and will become apparent with Miller in 2-3 years.

I guess the Oilers are in a special place though. Sitting on prime McDavid/Draisaitl, it is now or never for them.

Hasn't his D game been ok ? Plus his puck moving.

He's having a career year at 32 years old. If the average of the past few years is any indication, there is a good chance he regresses back to being a 3-4 dman next year making 11.5 mil. The last couple of seasons he was looking to be a buyout candidate.

I think he’s the type of player that needs puck on stick and with burns sharing that workload on pp1 it didn’t bode well with him but that also makes me wonder how it will go with mcdavid and draistle needing their puck time

Puck moving is great his own zone has always been an issue his whole career, he gets caught taking lots of risks and the older he gets the slower recovering his position has become… I personally feel he gives up more defensively that he provides offensively

Not sure you can classify a former two-time Norris trophy winner as having a career year at 32.  He was already the best defenceman in the NHL for several years before this year.  His injury robbed him of winning probably another 1-2 Norris trophies.  If he's playing with McDavid and Draisatl he's probably getting 100 points for the next 4 years...

So you're bullish. Interesting. Everyone just forgets about the injuries

Him being on pace for career bests in Goals, Assists, and Points are why you classify him as having a career year. Because that's literally what having a career year means.

He's also shooting at 12.9% scoring clip, when his career average is closer to 7.

He's on pace for 107 points while his previous best was 82. He hasn't surpassed 63 points since the 2016-17 season, so this year is a major outlier.

Previous 4 seasons points totals, 35, 22, 40, 45.

Sure, if injuries didn't happen he might have more hardware, but they happened, and he hasn't.

Anyone expecting him to keep up anywhere near this pace for the duration of his contract is out to lunch.

The game has changed and points are alot easier to get now than they were 6-7 years ago.  100 points is the new 85 points.  Sidney Crosby is 3 years older than Karlsson and is on pace for 100 points.  He only had 84 points 7 years ago.  So, obviously it is alot easier to score these days.

Nick Lidstrom won his first Norris trophy at age 31.  He won 7 by the time he retired.  Karlsson has been an elite defenceman his entire career.  He's only 32.  He can play at this elite level for several more years.  If he goes to Edmonton he is guaranteed to get 100 points for the next 4 years.

He's fully heatlhy right now and playing at a time where it's alot easier to score points.  Crosby is on pace for 100 points.  He's had a ton of injuries as well.  If you are an elite athlete then this is the perfect time for you to be in the game.  I can see Crosby and Ovechkin playing until they are 40.  Karlsson has at least 2-3 elite years left in him...

Ok, so he's still having a career year, it's just less impressive.

Gotcha.

Lots of players seem to be having "career years" this year.  Seems like the excess in scoring is contributing to that.  I guess we will find out over the next 2-3 years if these numbers are sustainable for these players.  I'm interested to see what Horvat does next year as one example...

I think Horvat falls even further than Karlsson.

He's another player shooting at nearly twice his career shooting percetage. 1/3 of his points coming off the PP, mainly with Vancouver. Now he's on a team with the league worst PP at 15%, playing on a d-first team who don't produce a lot of goals.

Both players are having major outlier years, and every single stat suggests it won't be replicated.
