It's been done multiple times already.  A contract can be retained on by 2 teams.

I would say Schenn and Boeser would be some teams plan C’s but let’s say a team like Jersey strikes out on Meier? Or Calgary decides they need to make the playoffs at all costs?

O Reilly is the perfect center for the shut down line , but he's still only gunna play 16 min a game . He can't bail out that defense all game. Not to mention coming off a foot injury, and already losing a step or two.
