Benning was convinced that he could get just as good of players through trading those picks and finding gems in later rounds.

Both failed miserably because there’s no surer way to get young talent in your lineup than drafting in the first and second round. It’s really not up for debate, look at any successful organization. Any young reclamation project is usually cast off for a reason.

I feel like this is Benning in his early years where everyone defended his moves (myself included). But I can’t just watch us make the same mistakes we did for 8 years under him and not question it. It’s 100% the reason we’re in this mess. Had we kept picks over the years and drafted properly we could have a young core and a steady pipeline of high end players coming up. Instead we have two core players and very little in terms of blue chip prospects.

And with no pipeline, then we will never have any depth. One injury and you take a massive downgrade at the position.

If we rebuild, it might not work fast, or at all, but it might.

Retooling as they call it, being perpetual buyer, definitely won't work.

Alvin thinks were going to make the playoffs next year. How? The team isn't really any better.  Lie to us, lie to ownership, but don't lie to yourself.

Anyway guys, I've started drinking, so either I'll walk away from this thread or you'll be arguing with a drunk later on tonight.

I’ll see your drunk later and raise you a drunk now.

Wouldn’t surprise me with this ownerships directive.

An 8-10 player will be 5-6 years away if they make it at all. Management has already shown they’re not willing to wait that long.

Which is why it’s baffling they’re allowing Tocchett to play Hughes 28+ minutes a night like they’re in a playoff hunt. It’s absurd.

They need to sit him down and remind him of the teams long term goals. One of the top 3 centers in this draft will probably ensure he has a job for much longer.

Yup. I totally agree. Hughes is clearly a phenom, and when he’s on the ice (e en with AHL D for partners) we dominate play. Petey is like that too. Heck, so is Demko. Three great players. If we desire a top three pick (to get one of those three franchise changing centres) then management has to tell Tocchet to play those guys a lot less.

Imagine the improvement to our club if we get Leo Carlsson?

I believe the pipeline has gotten bigger when you look at how much has been brought in since last summer

Johansson looks decent. He and DPetey are the only defence of note they brought in. It's better than nothing but certainly not strong.

My assumption is that they let Bear walk,  Johansson comes over next season and slots into the 2RD spot and they re-sign Schenn for the bottom pairing, with Juulsen and Breezer  as the #7-8 guys.

Hughes      hronek

OEL            Johansson

Wolanin     schenn

Breezer, Juulsen

That would make  this whole season worth it and I would actually believe a short retool could work.

The advantage we have is already having three key pieces that most rebuilding teams don’t have (Petey, Hughes, Demko).

Add an elite first/second line center and it’s just a matter of filling out the roster. It’s a huge piece that they should be doing everything to get. Play Delia more, Hughes closer to 20 minutes, split up Petey and Kuz. There’s nothing gained by overplaying these guys.

No and I mean it’s only been a year. We have a ton of contract space now. I suspect a few college signings soon

Hronek is awesome! This was a brilliant trade for us. We now have Hughes to anchor our top pair and Hronek to anchor our second pair. That’s a huge missing piece found.

Where do you see the possibility of both Jake Livingstone and Aidan McDonough?

If we get Livingston then he will play in our bottom pair.

We actually have a pretty good prospect pool now though.

Filip Johansson and Joni Jurmo are both looking like the real deal. EP2 is playing significant minutes in the SHL as an 18 year old as well. Thats 3 solid defensive prospects that should all be ready to step in within the next 2-3 years.

On forward.. we have Raty, Karlsson, Hoglander, Klimovich. Karlsson and Klim all way exceeded expectations this year and look like they could do some serious damage for us soon. Raty was a huge get as well and could be a two way 2C for us in a few years.

Goaltending we have silovs whos looking like the real deal.

We have a mediocre prospect pool which I guess is an improvement on like no prospect pool. I guess we have mediocre depth.

You know what would have improved that? Two high picks in a deep draft. Oh, and cap space.

Livingston is coming here. McDonnough is not. And Livingston is by far the better piece for us. It’s a win.

Allvin said today the Pens didn’t offer two higher picks for Miller. Is he lying? Maybe. But I think he takes two firsts and then flips them for the young centre he wants. Just like he flipped the Islanders’ pick for Hronek. So clearly the Pens didn’t offer high enough picks or we take them.

Their prospect isn't that bad.......people get hyperbolic about it, that's for sure.

Playing Hughes the way they are is just asking for him to get injured imo
