Aquilini was livid that Canucks picked Juolevi over Tkachuk

Juolevi’s London Knights teammate Matthew Tkachuk went one pick later to Calgary and is now a Hart Trophy finalist with the Florida Panthers. The Panthers are now one win away from the Stanley Cup Final, with Tkachuk leading the way offensively.

But it would take more than five years after the Juolevi blunder for Benning to get fired.

“It just seemed like Benning was always able to persuade Francesco that they were one big move away from this team becoming something,” Mason added. “The biggest thing that surprised me is when he passed on Tkachuk… That probably still eats Francesco up to this day. He was absolutely livid about that, that they missed that mark so badly.”

There's absolutely no way Franky was not informed of the decisions before hand.  He is not that owner.


As for the suggestion or hearsay in the rest of the story; it took 5 years after that for Benning to be fired?

 

Seems that this guy is as knowledgeable or as informed as anyone on this board so I am not inclined to give him much of my time because all of this is hearsay and conjecture and kind of the highlight of everything wrong with vancouver sports media

At the end of the day, thanks to Mike Gillis' horrible drafting (imagine if we had just average players from those picks), we wouldn't have been in a position to draft Petey or Hughes (as we'd end up higher in the standings.

 

Stealth tank without the boss even knowing!  That Gillis was even more smarter than he thought he was!:ph34r:

Did the owner do any scouting for him to be 'livid' about the selection? Benning was also around 5 years after that draft so clearly he wasn't nearly as 'livid' when he was making public proclamations for his support of Benning. Also it was the owner's choice to believe that they were one 'big move' away. Linden made it clear that they were not close and they chose to freeze him out and forced him to resign. This article just seems like doing damage control for an owner that has been accused of meddling in hockey operations. I am not the biggest fan of Benning but this seems to be a smear job and an attempt to throw him under the bus. Funnily enough the owner wasn't 'livid' with Ron Delorme, the guy that for years had full autonomy in running the scouting department and produced nothing, he is still around after multiple changes in management. Truly wonder what he has done to earn such loyalty from this ownership group.
