Hronek deal 2.0. Which is probably better than free agency. Free agency will always kill you. Devils fans are already laughing about how overrated their free agent d man is. Just like Scott Gomez and Clarkson. Never sign a free agent Devil

Again, I don’t have a source but if my memory serves me right it was reported. Not impressed doesn't mean they''ll trade him away undervalued lol. This is the same GM who got a 1st and a 4th for Nils Lundkvist.

BPA
Canucks might as well cut deep as they can. Trade Myers and Garland/Beau/Boeser. Free up all that cap space. Get young cheap ELC contracts in so that in year 5 of the buyout, the Canucks can hit the ground running towards the Stanly Cup as a powerhouse.

Hockey God
This management group would blow my mind if they now sign OEL as a free agent for veteran league minimum salary, whatever that is. Moneyball, hockey-style.

I even saw Nashville writers proposing Johansen to Vancouver as he is need of a change of scenery. Garland for Carlo & Reilly would be another good one with Reilly in his last year. Garland for Geekie, Driedger + pick since Driedger’s contract ends and could be a decent temporary backup. Johansen has an 8 million cap hit for 2 years. What would it take to resign him ? If its anywhere near the same then no
billabong
I think the underscore of this move is this was plan Z in clearing cap space and they’ve scoured the land and realized they couldn’t free up space in a trade without adding a sweetener or doing something crazy point being, they cornered themselves AGAIN and the rest of the league knows it thus they had free up space internally

I have a feeling JRPA have a plan and their eyes set on some signings or trades. I trust these guys. Filip Johansson is going to get a hard look as well. Not sure we’d even want to re sign him as he’d be 33 or something. Just a re-allocation of cap and filling a gap in the roster, albeit at a fairly steep cap hit (but reasonable term.)

Little point in rushing him into the lineup & undo that positive progression. Especially given the poor blueline makeup at the moment. MaxVerstappen33
2 hours ago, Elias Pettersson said: If you have good management who can get guys into the lineup on cheap ELC’s and UFA’s on the cheap then you don’t need to worry about an extra $1.75 million. Perfect examples are Dakota Joshua and Nils Aman. Both under $1 million and play a key role on the 4th line. Kuzmenko was another guy brought in at under $1 million. Now he’s a 40 goal scorer and he’s still on a relatively cheap contract even after an extension. As long as you don’t overpay for UFA’s you are fine. New Jersey has almost $3 million in dead cap this year. I am pretty sure they will be competing for the cup. Edmonton has almost $2 million for the next 2 years. Are they not chasing the cup? LA also has almost $3 million for the next 2 years. Florida has dead cap. Then there are teams that don’t have dead cap but have overpriced contracts on their books that are eating up cap space. Every team has problems. At the end of the day, we needed to free up cap space in order to get players to help us into the playoffs and beyond. They explored trading some bad contracts and couldn’t move anyone without major sweeteners attached. They already made trades to dill some holes but don’t have any more money to fill the rest of the holes. Something had to give. They obviously felt that OEL was not the player they wanted in their top 4 defence. And they didn’t want him as an anchor on the 3rd pairing for the next 4 years. So they decided to buy him out. It’s not the most ideal thing, but it was the lesser of all of the other evils to try and improve this team into a playoff team… But it doesn't really make sense if you are just going to go spend the cap gained on an unknown free agent who could be the Loui Ericcson of defensman. Then waiting a year to see if he can bounce back makes sense. If we really are in win-now mode and that is what this is all about then I'd rather trade the 11th oa pick in a Hronek type deal than just sign a free agent. Now they can talk to teams on equal footing. The Canucks areabetter team with Garland in the lineup on the third line. Him and Beauvillier. Management picked the one choice that hurt the team the least. 1 1
Pure961089
The one thing Canucks management has shown is they have a pretty good eye for talent. Kuzmenko, Aman, Joshua, Bear, Hirosi, there have been a few misses like Stillman and Studnika, Lazar, but for the most part the signings have been good. So I'm more optim²istic they can spend some of that money on players that will be good fits
