Being the key guy who leads a team to Cups and being on teams that win Cups is two different things. Bourque was Boston’s key guy. He couldn’t lead them to a Cup. The Pocket Rocket was a very good player but he was more a supporting role guy. Bourque just will always be ranked a tier below the other great D men who were able to lead their clubs to Cups. IMHAO Hedman and Doughty are ahead of Bourque. Bourque, for me is in with the likes of Phil Housley.

I’d take his words over yours. Lemieux made guys like Rob Brown, Randy Cunneyworth, Dan Quinn, Kevin Stevens, etc point per game players and they never eclipsed those marks after they left Pittsburgh. How was Lemieux a better goal scorer? What goal scoring records does he hold that Gretzky doesn’t? Gretzky turned Blair MacDonald into a 46 goal 94 point player. Made him a superstar for one year.

Do you also realize that Mario played like 500+ less games than Gretzky? Mario undoubtedly beats Wayne’s goal scoring record if he were healthy. He says that Howe is the greatest player ever. The fact is that Gretzky holds all of the goal scoring records not Lemieux. If you want to get technical about it then Bossy was a better goal scorer than both of them. He has the best goals per game average in NHL history. Gretzky even holds the record for most short handed goals in NHL history.

I'd also have Jagr in the top 10 of all time... Trevor Linden once said that Lidstrom was the best dman he had ever played against. But he was referring too the actual position and not taking into account the offense provided.
Westcoasting
I remember talking with hockey friends and saying how “ well he’s not going to be better at scoring than Bossy is”… then he gets 92 or however many the next season lol.

I would counter and say that if Gretzky played today with McDavid’s equipment and with no red line he would easily get 200+ assists and 250+ points. So, McDavid probably get 500 points and puts a few goalies in the hospital?

McDavid better have a similiar enforcer, else he'll get the same treatment EP got from the loser from Florida.

If Bossy had Snepsts feeding him in the slot every game, he'd gets 100 goals in a season without breaking a sweat. 1 2

Man was that a perfect pass or what? Right on the tape. Probably the best pass and assist in Snepsts career really...
Slegr
I’m old enough to have watched several Oilers games in the 80s when Gretzky worked his magic. I agree that he’s the best of the best. He was so thin and much smaller than guys like Lemieux. But he would pull out these five point nights regularly and just work magic. When Petey is really on his game, he shows those same glimpses of Gretzky. I think he’s the closest thing, apart from maybe Larionov, that the Canucks have had to a Gretzky.

I’ve watched Gretzky’s whole career. Obviously, Petey is my guy and I’ve watched his whole career too. I can honestly say that Elias Pettersson is the closet thing I’ve seen to Wayne Gretzky since Gretzky himself. They play a similar game. Watch some old Gretzky highlights and you will see the same thing. McDavid doesn’t play like Gretzky. He uses his speed mostly to make plays and score goals. Gretzky wasn’t the fastest guy. He used his IQ to make plays and score goals. Petey does the same thing. Even Gretzky said that Petey reminded him of himself. This is why I think Petey has another level to hit. He needed his Kurri, Kuzmenko, and got him last year. He’s got his Coffey in Hughes. Miller is a poor man’s Messier. Mikheyev is big and fast, he could be Anderson. Hronek is Kevin Lowe. Demko is Fuhr. Petey has the pieces now to hit the next level. I can see Petey hitting 120+ points. Maybe more.

They had that highlight on HNIC showing, side by side, Gretzky's and Petey's slapshot goal. Very similar styles. One thing about Petey, he'll never break Wayne's records, BUT, he has one of the strongest shots in the league, his skating is very strong, he's a defensive demon, and he's got a heart of a champion. He hates to lose.
