i don't know how terry sawchuck would fare in today's game but he excelled back in a time before plante created face masks.

i wonder how the modern goaltenders would fare without face masks.

Reminds me of another old name from the past...  Clint Benedict the actual father of the mask.

It's really easy to sleep on Sawchuk, Plante (especially Plante since he is getting little fanfare in here), Glenn Hall, Johnny Bower, Tony Esposito etc.

Guys like Georges Vezina and George Hainsworth are unfortunately stuck in the Joe Malone / Howie Morenz era and will never really get a fair comparison.

While we're talking about the oldest era, we've got to mention the greatest netminder before the 40s, Clint Benedict. Absolutely dominated the league with the original Senators.

This is why the THN list/ranking circa 1999, was so important.   Old timers were around not just for Richard, but Eddie Shore, Hainsworth,  Morenz, Cleghorn etc.   And if they felt Shore was better than anyone not named Orr or Harvey, maybe we should listen to them and appreciate that.     Borque's career was almost done then...Potvins long done.

It's really hard to compare that early era to the current game because they were played quite differently. However, if there was one guy who could challenge Orr for the greatest defenseman throne it's got to be Shore. Being a 4 time Hart winner and 7 time finalist is about as dominant as you can get. Shore trails only Gretzky and Howe in Hart trophies.

Charlie Conacher is another standout from that era. Lead the league in goals 5 times and points 2 times. Conacher was basically that generations Ovi.

George Hainsworth retired in 1936.  So, you would need to be over 100 years old to have seen him play.  Only 316,000 people out of $7.8 billion in this world are currently over 100 years old, so more than likely none of those 316,000 people are currently members of CDC...

a little before my time but i was born in 1938 and started hearing hockey games in 1945. i have seen a lot, forgot most of it.

The eye test says it’s Hasek everyday. Teams in Buffalo were not defensive juggernauts so he had to literally stand in his head many nights. No offence to Plante and the like but put Hasek behind a stellar defensive team and no one touches him in this category.
Now, I might be wrong, but I’ve trusted my eyes over the years and Hasek did things no one else before or after has even come close to physically matching. Wins and shutouts and Stanley Cups are TEAM accomplishments. Positionally, historically, physically, there’s no one better than the great Dom.

In 1993-94, Hasek had a GAA of 1.95.  In comparison, Brodeur was at 2.40 and Roy was at 2.50.  That's like Gretzky getting 200 points and other players getting 130 points.  Hasek was the Wayne Gretzky of goalies in his prime.  He didn't win the cups, but he won 6 Vezina's and 2 Hart trophies.

Not only that, but he also won those 2 Hart trophies back-to-back.  Only the greatest players of all time have ever won back to back Hart trophies.  And none of them were goalies.  Hasek is the only goalie to win 2 Hart trophies.

Patrick Roy is my playoff goalie.  But overall, you have to give the GOAT to Dominik Hasek...

My answer would be Richard Brodeur. He took us Canuck  fans on a magical run.And I don't really care how good other goalies may have been if they aren't on my team.

Hell of a goalie and perhaps actually the greatest goaltender in WHA history.

Also in the running for the best any goalie has ever played in the NHL through the first three rounds.  Wasn't bad in the final...just a very superior human rather than the demigod he was in rounds one through three.  Even after getting swept in the final he still led the entire league in playoff save percentage including Billy Smith.  Brodeur's save percentages in the first three rounds...  .954, .920 and .928...in close to the highest scoring season in NHL history.  While basically wearing backcatcher pads.

The celebration pose in the 1982 playoffs wouldn't be too bad of a statue.

I think it's actually crazy.  Smyl's jersey retired, a statue of Roger Nielsen, Gradin and Snepsts in the Ring of Honour...and then nothing at all for the guy who actually got us to the final.

The others are all deserving of their honours but Jeez Louise...

Chris Osgood Bio

Osgood, a three-time Stanley Cup winner with the Detroit Red Wings, is the only goalie in NHL history to win more than 400 games (401) and lose fewer than 250.
