Karlsson had no influence on me winning the cup. He was hurt in the 2nd round and gone for the rest of the 2nd and all of the 3rd and 4th rounds.

If Karlsson wasn't in my lineup Burns would of been.

People talk like a 3.5 star prospect is useless. 85 overall 3.5 star prospects aren't useless and that's what they can become.

It's not like renting players with one year left where you keep their rights and can sign them cheaper.

There are a lot of good 3.5 star prospects making millions of dollars some over 5 million. So don't act like its nothing. Colorado doesn't think Cochraine is nothing.

I think the issue with people is that yes he probably will become a good player, but won't be for several years down the road. There's 2 ways on determining a prospect's value.

1) His potential. That is how good he will be in say 3-4 years.
and
2) How good he is right now as a player.

San Jose clearly saw value in his potential; whereas, most people here value him based on how good he is right now. For me, I have no interest in that particular prospect so I value him on how good he is right now. But that's just me. Either way, what's done is done. Let's move on.

Well I traded Burns for two prospects in their 60s and lost his rights forever

Why then would trade 2 prospects one in his 70s and the other in his 50s with a first round pick for a three month rental where I lose his rights too ? That makes no sense at all.

If I was San Jose I would of done the same thing; sure I would if tried to get a bit more in the trade but we were at 10 minutes before the deadline. I did the same strategy when I missed the playoffs. I traded my superstars (Joe Thornton and Girardi) for prospects and that deal just won me a cup as those deals were a major part of me getting Hossa and Leetch.

Karlsson probably didn't have influence on your team winning the cup, but he sure had influence on your team making the playoffs. If I remember correctly, you were holding that final playoff spot by a couple of points or so.

I didn't veto it because mpt doesn't do anything wrong. Things may look bad on the outside, but him and I have lots of discussions in PMs about things.

If I saw that trade as a rental in the first part I would have vetoed it. He asked me about it before he made anything final.

I'm making this rule right now. No renting players. It's not realistic.

However you look at it, it's not as BS as people may think.

He rented Karlsson, yes. Karlsson helped his team to the playoffs and got injured in the playoffs.

But, if he wasn't getting Karlsson, he wouldn't have traded Brent Burns. Burns is what? 86 overall? He probably would have made the playoffs anyways. There's no telling if he would or would not have made it. Maybe his team would have played better defensively with Burns and he'd have been higher than 6th place.

There is a friendly resolution to this unfortunate predicament.... Every team interested in these players will be represented by a number which will be used at random.org to determine who gets these players. Problem solved. No one gets hurt, banned or loses draft picks :)

If we're going to do that, I think each GM should only be allowed to pick one or the other. Everyone will just put in for both, otherwise. Plus I doubt any 1 team will have the cap space to take both on should 1 team win both.

Signing Spezza and Green is not an honest mistake, you knew the rules, you were we'll aware of the rules, you even asked what the punishment would be if you were to break the rules.

This is completely unacceptable.

"unfortunate predicament"
OTT's GM blatantly broke the rules on UFA's, he knew exactly what the rules were when he signed 1 yr. contracts for Spezza and Green.
He beat me out for Spezza by $150K as I had a 2yr. contract bid and knew I had this years FA's to sign and could not go higher.
As you can see he had Kopitar, Voracek and Filitov to sign this year so he had to bid 1 yr on Spezza and Green or lose those 3 players.
He stole all the top UFA's last year with the full intent on not abiding by the rules.
I have dealt with Rated R and he is a great guy and a valued addition to the league, but I cannot fiqure out what he was thinking when he signed those 2 guys against the rules.
Like I said this will get ugly
