With how wide open the 11th spot is, it makes the most sense to trade down and recoup the 2nd we traded away in the Hronek deal.

I would have prefer the two picks because the Islander pick and high second are good places to be in a strong draft. However, the Nucks were desperate to fix the right side D even with the high cost. Credit goes to Yzerman for selling high on Hronek.

If Bedard really wants to be a Canuck, he could pull off a Lindros (Michel Goulet did the same to get drafted by Quebec too). So that is why finishing closer to the bottom is useful because it will be easier to facilitate a trade when you have a low pick too (or other teams could let him slide to your draft position like what happened with Goulet). Aside from the Lindros option, Bedard could go the college route, spend a few years there, and then will be free to sign with whichever team he wants to. Not saying he would do any of this, but if he really wants to the power is in his hands. Just putting this out there.

Going back to 2006 our organizational need has been RHD, RHC, RW predominantly.
2006 we took Grabner over Lewis, Stweart and Giroux. 3 players in which people were clamouring for.
2007 we took White over Subban and Perron. Safe
2008 we took Hodgson over Karlsson. Numerous people wanted Karlsson due to the RHD factor and his ability. Safe ish but arguable
2009 we took Schroder over O'Reilly. LOADS wanted O'Reilly badly
2011 Jensen over Jenner/Rakell. Some wanted Rakell but a large voice wanted Jenner
2012 Gaunce. Safest possible pick due to his being BPA but many wanted to trade down
2013 Horvat and Shinkaruk. people were pissed we took Horvat over Nicushkin. But they also wanted Shae Theodore over Shinkaruk
2014 Virtanen and McCann. Virtanen was not the BPA over Nylander/Ehlers. McCann was not wanted over Pasternak and Kempe
2015 Boeser was debated over Konecny but he was the BPA
2016 is arguably the one year we took an organizational need and instead of taking the RHD Sergachev, we took the "consensus" Juolevi over 1 good tournament
2017 Pettersson yes
2018 Hughes yes
2019 Podkolzon. Eveeryone wanted Zegras and were happy with Podkolzin. Jury is out
2022 Lekkerimaki over Bischel and Pickering and even Kemmel. Both players people were screaming for
By and large you see we took the BPA associated with that draft position while many in threads easily found were clamouring for what was the organizational need a year or two out. Gaunce, White. Hodgson. All arguably the safe picks due to need and player draft bio but by and large we chose the exact same types of players ignoring our RHD and RHC for over a decade. Look where we are now? We tend to go for home runs on the BPA with skilled smaller players and it's blown up in our face consistently.
If you look at our most consistent organizational needs in player types we never drafted. had we gone with organizational need as many were clamouring for; we'd have done FAR FAR better.
It was unfortunate the team went on a run at the end of the 2018-19 season that put us ahead of Anaheim. Otherwise, we would have drafted Zegras over Pod.

Most NHL teams are cash strapped and I do not think the Nucks want to trade away their 23 1st in a strong draft. What about bringing in a third team like Chicago who have some cap space and two first round picks in their own and TB (top 10 protected for both 23 and 24 drafts). We could trade someone like Garland (or some other player(s) for one of TB 1st owned by Chicago and then combined it with Ekman-Larsson for Karlsson with SJ retaining 50% of the latter's contract. It could possibly help all three teams. The Nucks get to strengthen their right side D and free up cap space. SJ will be free of EK and the 1st will help their rebuild while Chicago get an asset. What do you think? Are we giving up too much or the trade could be improve?

Motte was heading into free agency so we got what we could for him. I agree with Schmidt and Dickenson we bought on the high side and sold low.

You are talking about yourself. Not true, just stating the facts. I thought Benning made some good picks like Pettersson, Hughes, and Boeser. I would rate him as a good scout just not a super one.

We could have bought low on Jarry last season. Anyhow, he is one of the hotter goalies at the moment.

I would favor making a gm change at the end of the season when there are more candidates around preferably from an successful organization. For example, during the Pat Quinn era, the Nucks were one of the stronger teams in the league and had Burke and McPhee as their assistant gms. Burke went on to win a Cup in Anaheim while Mcphee went on to build a strong Capital team that stay on top of their division for a long time. More recent example, after McPhee is let go from Washington his assistant MacLellan became the gm and went on to win the cup. Same thing with Tampa, after Yzerman left to go to Detriot, his successor Brisebois won the cup. Yeah...and that is not just a cup of java.

Yep, the underlying numbers for Juulsen and Lammikko are slightly worse than Joulevi. Also, you'll be getting 2 contracts (2 x 0.75) in return while losing one (1 x 0.75). So regrettably, Florida is off loading more garbage at a higher cost on us than we are giving them.

It must be thrilling for Seattle to have a new NHL team and a new captain. I remembered the amazing feeling when the Nucks first entered the league and our first captain was Orland Kurtenbach.

After seeing Markstrom, Toffoli, Tanev, etc. go last summer, I'm more incline to trade JT for something than risk not getting anything back in return. You'll be selling high (or close to it) so you could get maximum value. Ideally, the best time is now until next summer because other teams like it when there is term left on the contract. If you wait until the last year, the offers might not be as good.

Yep, you missed the point. We are talking apples and oranges. You are talking about picks that made the NHL while I'm talking about picks that turn out to be impact/star players. When you could draft an impact player every one out of every two picks in the first round, you are doing a pretty good job and should continue doing it. So in no ways I'm slamming Benning, but instead acknowledging his success with first round picks.

Looking at Bennings track record with 1st round picks, he have been hitting something like a 50% success rate at getting a impact player with it. Successful picks include Boeser, Petterson, and Hughes. Less successful picks include Virtanen, McCann, and Juolevi with Podkolzin being too early to tell. So I would say keep the pick because it is usually the easiest way to getting an above average player.

I learned from Montreal that having a Northern division helps a Canadian team advance to the final 4 spots and one series win away from contending in the Stanley Cup! In the past while under the previous divisional format, it has been very difficult for Canadian teams to make it to the end or even the final 4 for that matter. Thankfully, the habs ended the long drought and made it to the last dance this season!

Let me help you understand. This approach is just one of several options available to help improve the club. Of course getting a no. 1 D seems unlikely through the ufa route at such a low cap. Good point. What it does (as shown in Leafs and Panthers examples) is you could get complementary pieces to add to your team at good value. Look at the gm in Florida. He used this method (along with other moves) to successfully help improve his team and is now the favorite to win gm of the year.

Like I said before that is the job of management. It is not an easy task because you still need to do your homework, due diligence,...etc. Anyhow, a very recent example is Toronto just resign Speeza to a 1 year $750,000 for the fine work he did last season.
