I believe the KHL season ends fairly early would Podkolzin be eligible to come to NA aftarward?

Podz is playing for arguably the best team in the KHL. The Gagarin Cup finals end around mid April. If we make the playoffs, he should be able to make it around then.

In the article that I linked, the writer explains why the stats are not representative of Pod's season.

Also, Pod will be turning 18 in late June, whereas Doro has been 18 since last October.  Pretty significant gap at such a young age.

Also, you don't really think that Doro is a better pick than Pod, do you?  I mean, most of the pro scouts have him listed in the late teens, whereas Pod is in the top 5.  You know something they don't know?

Firstly, any junior player getting time in the KHL should have more attention than they're getting. But let me give a go at summarising some of these scouting reports.

The MHL is the junior league, and the better players in the league typically score a lot. It would be fair to compare it to the Swedish junior league.
The VHL is between the Allsvenskan and Liiga in terms of difficulty, but it is notoriously hard to score goals here.
The KHL are obviously the bigs. But KHL teams tend to have 4 blocks, with 4 offensive lines and 4 defensive lines, ice time tends to also be pretty evenly distributed.

So Pod came in the VHL early in the year, playing for the best team in the league. Since he's playing against men, it took time to adjust. He got significantly better. In terms of ice time and ppg, he did admirably. So he actually had a decent stat line. Eventually he had his international tournaments and he found himself in the KHL playing a total of 10 minutes in 3 games. The fact that he was given ice time at all for SKA is huge though. They are loaded. His time in the junior league doesn't do him justice, and it's probably the reason why people are so skeptical of him. There could be a dozen different explanations, but he did underachieve in the junior league.

Podkolzin has an awkward skating stride, and he has shown to be a little arrogant. So, he would try to do everything by himself. Which to be fair, he almost had to. He does not use his teammates very well. But everything else is top notch.

Dorofeyev played most of his time in the junior league. He did decently well. He is also almost a year older than Pod. I feel like teams in the eastern conference of the KHL tend to also give more chances to their junior players. It's usually because they rely on their development programs to get players. Teams like SKA and CSKA just buy anyone they like. So although they have great junior programs, they only take the best of the best. This was a good reason why Dorofeyev got a bigger stint in the KHL. He averaged 8 minutes a game, which is already decent. And he put up a couple of assists.

He's clearly a little smallish in size terms. Tall but lanky. Has great offensive instincts. Is an average skater but it sometimes feels like he slower than he really is. He's a bit raw and will need time to develop. But could prove a lot of people wrong - could turn out to a pick teams regret passing on.

But, to reiterate, the reason Dorofeyev got into the KHL for a couple of games is because he is possibly the only other notable prospect in Magnitogorsk's development system, which is an achievement in itself. For Podz, it's different. He has shown that his is the top prospect for his age group, and SKA almost never promotes any of their junior players. That's a much bigger feat to me. And that was also reflected in the world juniors. The coach really has a huge bias against taking younger Russians. But he took Podz. They're both really interesting players, and I guess the Russian factor would apply to the both of them. But there shouldn't be an issue with them actually coming over, more just how much time it'll take for them to do so. Podz has a 2 year contract with SKA. They're definitely going to throw money at him afterwards.

Does anyone get Nichushkin vibes from Podz?

  3. I like the Cozens vs Newhook debate.

I've seen a couple of scouting reports targeting Cozens consistency. No one doubts his skill or defensive acumen. But, due to social stigma, a big man like Cozens is going to be more of a defensive specialist. The best-case scenario sees him becoming more like Toews/Bergaron/RoR/Kesler/Patrick. Less so Bergaron, as I'm not aware of him ever having had any consistency issues. While that probably says to me that he'll likely never be a true #1C, he could definitely have a little more offensive upside that Horvat/Kesler.

Newhook is coming from the BCHL. While that doesn't exactly have to mean anything, the two big BCHL-alumni are Turris and Jost. They're both neat players, but not the type you'd typically pick in the 10th slot. You could ask yourself what-if, but, I'd say you're better off going with Cozens if you're given the choice of the two.

  4. Really enjoyed his writing, even with his far-fetched takes on some of what was going on. He always seemed to bring in new information about the Canucks with every issue of the Provies/Athletties. This guy is invaluable and irreplaceable to the Canucks.

I owe a decent part of my Canucks fandom to Botch, he really got me excited about the team. And he is definitely the only reason I subscribed to the Athletics. Following the Canucks will never be the same without him. May you rest in peace, Jason. To me you'll be as big a part of the Canucks as any other person surrounding the team.

  5. I feel like there could be a trade incoming before the draft that might involve Sutter. It would make sense as it's a shame to waste him on the RW of Beagle, and a good 3/4C is still a premium position. I'm sure there are teams out there who would be interested in Sutter, and we can afford to retain salary if necessary. If we do, I could imagine us getting back a 2nd or 3rd. It would be awesome to have another 2nd or 3rd rounder to play with.

That said, I think Harley is likely available at the end of the 1st round - around the 22nd-26th spot. Truthfully, I'd be a little disappointed if we were to draft him so high. But I would give Brackett the benefit of the doubt. He does fit the speed-mantra we've been preaching, and he's a good puck mover. I still think we should go with a forward, as that would be BPA, and find ourselves a great D in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Any candidates for the 2nd and 3rd rounds? A guy like Kaedan Korczak, or Alex Vlasic, are interesting.

  6. I really wonder if it'd be possible to move back a little in the first round. Maybe even take on some cap for a year and get some assets in return.
If we could get a second 2nd round pick, and maybe another 3rd, we could really restock our cupboards with some D prospects worth cheering for. It'll depend on who's available at the 10th pick, but Heinola, Soderstrom and Broberg could all be nice pickups at around 12/13/14/15. And then gaining those extra assets... it's a gamble, but what if eh.

I highly doubt that Gagner would be recalled to Utica, regardless of the Canucks' ability to do so.  The whole point of the loan is to make the best of the situation and give him what he'd prefer as much as we can.  Making him move to Toronto for 2 months, then uproot him and his family to Utica for 4 months, would be counterproductive to that goal.

I think Gaudette and Dahlen are on similar levels in terms of NHL readiness.  If things go well, both could be recalled by TDL and prove that they can stay in the lineup, which may leave Utica with something like this for top 9:

    Archibald - Kero - Jasek/ Lind

    Boucher - Gaunce - Jasek/ Lind

    Gadjovich - McMaster/ MacEwan - Palmu

A good mix of vets and prospects.  If Demko has a Markstrom-like year, the team should be competing for a playoff spot, even without one or both of Dahlen and Gaudette.  If Dahlen/ Gaudette ends up staying the whole year, maybe that'll be the push needed to win one or two rounds.  If not, guys like Lind and Palmu will get more offensive opportunities in their absence, which wouldn't be a bad deal at all.

It's a neat exercise, but I believe they're trying out a couple of duos. Without Gaudette and Dahlen though, the team looks a little deflated. I see it more like:
    Boucher - MacMaster - Jasek
    Archibald - Kero - Lind/Palmu
    Gadjovich - Gaunce - Palmu/Lind

But I'm wondering, if Gaudette and Dahlen are up with the Canucks, are you assuming that Sutter is traded/injured and Eriksson, Goldobin, Baertschi are traded/injured as well? I see Dahlen getting a spot in the top 6, but not really the bottom 6 (in that case they're more likely to recall MacEwan or Archibald). Like, what type of scenario are you predicting?

I'm more concerned about Brisbois being out as the Comets D is relatively thin as it is; whereas, they have an excess of players in the forward group that can fill in while Adam Gaudette is out.

I heard it's a minor issue, he shouldn't be out for too long. They have two games this weekend (Fri, Sat). I wonder if they'll sign anyone, but either way it's a good question:
    McEneny, Brisebois out with injury.

    Juolevi - Chatfield
    Sautner - Sifers
    Dirk/ Graham - Blujus

This doesn't have to be a bad thing. Sautner and Juolevi are both guys who could probably take 25 minutes a game. It could do their development some wonders.

  9. If Gagner passes waivers, there is still a good chance that we could trade him just like the Flames just traded Kulak.
If he does play for Utica, that's the playmaking center they've been wanting since Cal O Reilly. With Gagner, Gaunce, Gaudette, Archibald and Boucher down there, there's a good chance we could contend for the Calder Cup. But I do see Lind and Gadjovich have difficulties getting used to the game, and if the D get any significant injuries or are called up, it could really cause a bit of chaos. So it'll really depend on how things go for both Utica and the Canucks.

We have McEneny, Chatfield, Brisebois, Sautner, Juolevi, Sifers and Blujus that I consider top 6 defensemen.

There have been some very good Russians, but there always seems to be a glitch or two. Bure, the most talented Canuck ever, never really seemed like he wanted to be here. Larionov, a favourite, had politics screw everything up. Artem Chubarov, a personal favourite, seemed destined to return, but his Audi just collected dust in the underground parking.

Add in all the negative Russian experiences like Kirill Koltsov ( + Grot, another 2nd rounder that year ) and Tryamkin being unhappy with their playing time, plus all the draftees who never showed up to a training camp, and we are a touch edgy when thinking of adding more Russians. Imagine the angst if we had taken ( as many wanted ) Nickushkin instead of Horvat ! Now, if Artem Manukyan turns into a big star for us, I'll pretend I never said this.

I won't argue about Koltsov, but we don't really know why Tryamkin left. We've speculated so much, but it was a personal decision, one that isn't irreversible. We may yet see Tryamkin come back. But he respected his contract and decided that he needed more time away from the NHL, there is no shame in that. I don't see a glitch in that.
I do find it a bit surprising that you're banking on Manukyan to change that trend. A 6th rounder who is unlikely to make it in the first place really shouldn't hold any sort of significance. I think if anyone would change the trend, then it could be Goldobin.

That said, Podkolzin is a RW. We've amassed quite the depth on the right wing, so I don't see us being too interested in him. He seems more like a Berggren type guy. Someone who plays in a lower league, is hard to project but has some decent international experience. I'd have him going late first, early second.

Does Linden stepping down signal the end of the affiliation with Utica?   Linden felt the limited travel and extra practice time was good for development and more than offset the distance factor.  Also felt the atmosphere was a big plus.    He was in Utica's corner, yet the extension which was rumored has never followed.

I see the logic behind it. There are loads of pros and cons to either side. But I imagine it would be a kick in the butt for Utica. If I remember correctly, they recently renovated and expanded their arena and the fans really want to keep the team.

Quinns team came in third in the frozen four and now they add his brother so I'm thinking another deep drive in the playoffs and FF champions so getting him here at the end of the year won't happen.

The teams first line has moved on! So while Jack Hughes might slot in, they might not be as strong as they were this season. But here's to hoping they rip it up with Quinton.

I would really love to see what a Juolevi - Hughes pairing could do. I know I'm rooting for Juolevi to make the team and force Benning to do some trades.

  13. So this was written on the 5th of December. The estimated timetable should now be through and McEneny should be healthy. Does anyone have any details, or know where to find any? Twitter has no information about McEneny that I can find. I still have hopes that he could be our #1D on Utica this year. Him being healthy could really elevate the team to Calder Cup contenders. If I remember, his D partner on Utica was Chatfield.

Do you think there is a chance that Canucks management will want Trent Cull to revert MacEwen back to centre where he played in junior, or does it look more like MacEwen will be a winger?

Also any word if Utica is interested in bringing back veteran Wacey Hamilton?

I listened to a couple of interviews with Cull at the end of the season and my takeaway was that MacEwen will be tried at center, at the very least in preseason.

And I really hope that Hamilton doesn't get resigned. Haven't heard anything suggesting they would.

  15. I was listening to the Swedish commentary for this game. Whenever Dahlén's name came up, it was always shouted out in a very excited tone! I can't wait to hear more of that in NA next season.

    JONATHAN DAHLÉN!
