    Matthews has done pretty well...

I think it's a different situation since we have an insider with the team Juolevi is player with to watch over his development, anyways i wish him the best.

Matthews never played in the CHL, but, I get your point.

I really hope he does improve this year though. He should be on the roster next season.

It's what is best for Juolevi, he really didn't have much more to learn at the OHL level, he needs to get used to playing against men, who are faster and stronger, as that appears to be where he had most troubles this preseason.  The fact that we have him with Salo, who's also got the canucks intentions in mind is just an added bonus.  Hope he has a strong year in Finland

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Juolevi. Ideally, he'd be eligible for the AHL.

Unfortunately the past suggest that players going from the CHL to Europe to the NHL don't end up reaching their potential. Hopefully he can change that narrative.

Has Jake done enough to warrant an actual spot on the crowded at the wings Canucks roster or not.

My unpopular opinion is to still send him down

Ray Ferraro was on tsn1040 today and made some excellent points about Jake. I agree with what he said, which is basically to send Virtanen down to Utica where he hopefully scores 10-15 goals before Christmas. Allow him to play 15-16 minutes a night and continue to build his confidence. Then, bring him up to the NHL.

Just here wondering where all the people screaming BUST are at?   Maybe in the Juolevi thread?

Weird that a 20 year old kid was still developing as a player.  Just weird.

3 games doesn't really mean a whole lot other than that he's clearly gained better habits. If this wasn't the case then in February 2016 he would've been considered the second coming of Jesus.

I don't see this at all. His offensive production was the only thing Juolevi didn't improve this past year and its not like it took a step back either. He played on a much weaker London team this year so expectations to put up a much better offensive season would be extremely hard for anyone. Anyone who watched his game,  saw every other part of it grow. He put on a lot of weight and it will take time to catch up, stop expecting everything at once.

I actually did watch about 20-25 London games this past year, but thank you for jumping to conclusions.

And guess what? I wasn't very impressed with him. He was not even the best defensemen on the team, Victor Mete was. Of the games I watched, he was frequently getting beat wide, which happens to be the same issue he is having right now.

6 or 7 years ago, this wouldn't be a huge issue, but the NHL is a different league than what it was. By the time most young players are 21, you already have a good understanding of what you have in them. Since 2013 (excluding 2017 of course) there's only been a few prospects drafted in the top 5 who haven't made an immediate impact. Namely MIchael Dal Colle and Bennet, both players who probably shouldn't have been drafted where they were.

  6. The problem with Juolevi is that his development has been stagnant. He hasn't really improved since he was drafted, which is inexcusable for someone picked that high. You can take Tkachuk out of the equation and still be upset over the Juolevi pick.

1 more year in the AHL and call ups due to injuries.

It's 1 pre-season game and he needs to be assured to be an important or go to player for a year where he already understands the level of competition.  Learn to win and gel with other prospects ready to take the next step.  Full time NHL next year.

We're in no rush right now.  And I would be amused reading 5th lines comments every week

I agree. If he play well in pre-season, I think it's best to reward him with more ice time in Utica and a larger role on the PP. Let him get comfortable this year playing in different situations and have him be one of the first call ups for injuries.

For me, the same goes with Boeser, Dahlen, Goldobin, and Juolevi (who will likely play in Finland).

When/If Pettersson puts on some strength he should be dominant in any league. Hopefully that extra strength doesn't slow him down because wow is he fast now lol

Fast as in what? Hands? Skating? He's certainly not a fast skater if that's what you we're alluding to.

I was thinking the other day, clearly with a time warp issue, that is the Canucks as Virtanen and Guddy in their 2011 lineup in SCF against Bruins, does it go down differently?

    No.

I don't think they could make up for the injuries.

    Kinda like Hodgson?

Maybe it has a bit to do with the culture? Nevermind, you wouldn't understand. You've probably never made a big whopper meal now have you? Try aassociating with Mcdonalds while trying to be a pro athlete and you'll feel right at home with Virtanen.

Yea. I love misery. I love having a losing team. I want to break down and humiliate every person we sign so their bank account is the only thing that looks good.

Once this team ends the " i " culture, we will win. Just like Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and so on.

end of thread. Oh, I'm sorry, did I make you uncomfortable exposing the absolute disgustingness that the rest of the league holds their noses at that is the culture of "canucks nation"? The one all of you trolls are fighting JB for trying to change?

My bad. I guess u have to think of some one else next time you buy your happy meal. Maybe yourself?

    No, but you're mom hasB)

  11. I'm not going to write him off until after this summer. He certainly is no Nylander, Ehlers, but he as a skillet that can be effective as an NHL 3rd line/grinder at the least albeit a low IQ.

However, if he comes to camp and plays like he did this year, I will personally label him as a bust. You can make a case for someone still learning the pro game, which is fine by me, but you can't make an excuse for someone who repeatedly shows up to training camp looking like a Big Whopper meal while acting entitled.

His offensive game is unreal. He makes plays in the offensive end so easily and he looks like he's not even trying. Game looks easy for him. He also has that quiet swagger/cockiness about him. Would love to draft him after the top 2.

I haven't been able to find out too much about his defensive game and his ability in the faceoffs though. Anyone know??

He's definitely not as developed defensively as he is offensively. Having said that, he's far from a liability. Anyways, I think if you're drafting Casey, you're rafting him because of his offensive instincts, not his defensive ones. You can teach solid, structured D. You can't teach natural offensive skills.

  13. If we land outside the top 2, which is most likely, I hope we take Mittelstadt. The kid has such great poise and the rare ability to slow game down. Electrifying hands and excellent offensive instincts. Very good hockey IQ too.

He has the most potential out of the draft imo. Especially that play starting at 2:28. Makes a quick play, loses the puck and quickly stick lifts the defender, and then turns and rips a pass into the slot.

I heard the same things said about Kesler. Boy we're we wrong.

There are a couple differences here.

Firstly, Granlund and Baerstchi are 24. At that age, Kesler was already a 75pt player, and his elite two way play was rapidly developing. Secondly, the competition we have in today's NHL is ridiculous. Most teams have at least one young star these days, save for the bunch that have 2 or 3. We could plan for Baer and Granlund to be top 6 players for us, but we're not going to be nearly as successful offensively as our opponents. To contend with our opponents, we can't afford to have either of them in our top 6, period.
