VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - UBC could end up being part of the solution to fund Vancouver's top transit priority.

City Hall and the university have been talking about money for rapid transit along the Broadway corridor.

Vancouver is continuing to try to shore up support for a plan to get SkyTrain service along Broadway right up to UBC; part of the challenge is figuring out funding.

The City's transportation director, Jerry Dobrovolny, says they've had discussions with the university. "We're committed to a connection, rapid transit subway connection to UBC... and they would have to comment on their potential financial contributions."

Dobrovolny has also told city council the solution to the Broadway corridor must be SkyTrain service, arguing other options like light rail would cause too many problems in the neighbourhoods.

"We tried very hard and we've looked at it for years to see if there was a surface solution west of Arbutus; our conclusion today is no there is not," he says.

The city has identified rapid transit along Broadway as key to a plan to get two-thirds of city trips by foot, bike, or transit by 2040.

  2. It's pretty clear that AV likes 2 scoring lines and 2 checking lines. So I don't see Schroeder as a 3rd line checking centre. How's Schroeder's face % anyways (offensive and defensive)?

I actually think MG is going to get a top 10 pick in this year's draft (CBJ, TO, or TB??) and go for a big centre with 2nd line potential.

  3. If Nucks re-sign Pahlsson (which I hope they do) then there's no room for Schroeder in the near future. And Schroeder didn't seem to fare well on the wing. So I expect him to be traded in the summer. Maybe part of a package for a top 4 D (assuming Salo retires) or a move up the draft.

  4. I think next year Kassian will start in the AHL in a top six role and will come out better for it. Kassian needs to work on his consistency. Much like how Tanev started in the AHL this year but is adding depth for the Stanley Cup run this year.

  5. It's funny how CDC is soooooooo in love with Kassian and Hodgson.

Hodgson provided scoring depth on the 3rd line.

Kassian is a rough tough physical 3rd/4th line winger.

    Both are rookies.

Be excited for your Canucks players but don't put them on a pedestal.

    Here's hoping Kassian does well.

  6. Kassian didn't look that great on the 2nd line against Dallas. I saw 2 bad passes to the middle to no one. Resulted in Canucks getting hemmed into their zone.

Put him on the 3rd/4th line so there's not so much pressure on the guy and let him develop (he's a rookie). I don't think he deserves to leap frog over Higgins (unsung hero).

  7. ^ areas in need are the East-West extension for the Millenium Line from Commercial to UBC. It's ridiculous how many B-Lines they have running on Broadway to try and keep up with demand there.

I've been wanting a Skytrain to UBC for a long time.

The usage will not drop cuz there will be new student every year.

But I can just imagine the NIMBYism going into the West Side of Vancouver.

  8. I don't mind paying more taxes (property tax or gas tax) if it was to fund NEW transit builds (ie. Skytrain) to areas in need. I probably won't even use it but it's for the greater good of MetroVancouver.

When I was younger...I used the EXPO line alot. Not so much now that I'm older. Never thought I would use the Millinium (sp?) line when it was built but now I use it once a week (just recently). Things change and people are too short sighted to see the big picture.

  9. I wonder if there will be any Martin Nash jerseys for sale. I'd still like to get his, seeing as he's been with the organization so long.

But yes I wish Bell's name wasn't on the front either. I took a look at a few in Lougheed and it made me feel like a billboard. However I'm sure they wouldn't be willing to sponsor our team if their logo wasn't plastered in plain view <_<

I don't want to look like I work for BELL.

    ;)

And if BELL ends their sponsorship with Whitecaps...then it will really look dumb.

    MARCH TOTALS 11 1 2 3 3 16

His goal in March was his first in 19 games (18 games between goals).

He looked good when I noticed him in the games at the beginning of the month. The problem is I didn't noticed him that much. Flashes of brilliance, but he needs to be more consistent.

Is he playing centre or wing?

I think with his small size and speed...he'd be more suited for wing.

  11. That last part is intriguing but I wonder how it would be done?

I have to say though, I love the idea of bike lanes, it's just the way they are being done that might be part of the problem.

And it should be mentioned that all those workers and businesses that those suburbians are flocking to generate a lot of tax revenue for the city.

And of course the damn feds are siphoning off gas taxes and giving next to nothing in return.

Either way, a move to a rational pricing system for all modes of travel where it was fair and clear would probably reduce the amount of griping than the behind the scenes dollar shifting that is in place.

I think that might open a whole new can of worms.

I think mass transit is the way to go instead of a few bike lanes. You want people out of cars...give them better transit. Not everyone is going to bike to work when they live outside of Vancouver, have kids to drop off for morning practice, etc.

  12. Never golfed and it shows.

Played a 18 hole game (work sponsered) last week. Didn't know all the etiquette and stuff. I probably had about maybe 5-6 good swings/puts the entire time. It was a fun 5 hrs. I think I'll take it up since my bro gave me his old set of clubs. Maybe take some lessons so I won't suck as much.
