  1. One of my biggest pet peeves when taking public transportation is when old people pretend to get scared when I walk in.

    1. I am wearing a LIGHT grey rain jacket,

    2. I have a professional/traditional hair cut

    3. I don't look very threatening...I look clean...I dress well...I don't even drink alcohol.

I'm pretty sure they're jealous because I look like I have a good paying job...and if that's the case...that's pretty sad.

To the people of British Columbia,

You have pissed off ONE good Samaritan!

    lol what?

  2. You were warned about the bus changes five years ago, it should come as no surprise.

South of Fraser express buses like the 351 are massive money bleeders for Translink, some of the worst revenue generating bus routes in the region. Fare revenues only recover 20% of the cost it takes to operate buses like the 351 (the rest is subsidized), compared to the Vancouver proper average of 60% and the region-wide average of 48%.

South of Fraser buses are being re-routed to Bridgeport to reduce that subsidy, and to free up money to operate the Canada Line. Translink is about to enter a $450-million annual deficit here if it continues with its expansion plans, it needs to make some hard choices. It needs about $150-million more per year just to maintain existing transit service levels.

The problem we may see now on September 7th is a massive backlog on the Canada Line with all those bus riders being transplanted and transferred into the new train line. A lot more people are riding the Canada Line today than originally expected.

Isn't that good? Isn't higher ridership going to equal more income from the line?

And, I have made no effort to look, but do you know what the figures they were projecting for ridership?

  3. I'm sure this is in the thread somewhere, but I don't feel like sifting through 235 pages and the translink website is being very unhelpful.

I'm just curious how the airport add fare is going to work when it's implemented. Are they basically making the airport at 4th zone? How is that going to work with bus passes? Say someone has to commute regularly from Vancouver to the airport, would they then have to buy a 3 zone bus pass? Or are bus passes going to be exempt from the add fare?

I thought they were getting rid of zones and making everything based on distance traveled?

  4. Hybrid or electric cars? Maybe a reality within the next ten to twenty years. ;)

We are already seeing hybrids all over the place. Full electric or hydrogen cars are not that far off. I think more like 5-10 years before we start to see fully transitioned vehicles from oil based to, well OTHER. There are plenty of ideas out there that are being pursued by motor vehicle companies. I have a feeling, for a little while anyways, we will have several options to choose from in terms of alternate fuel cars and trucks.

  5. The translink can't just keep charging us money forever. (increasing our property tax. . . )

They have to think of better ways to improve their own system.

Speaking of which. Is the Translink system different than other transportation systems across the world? Are they not using the money as efficiently as they could be? Or is it SIMPLY a matter of not enough money? I'd like to know if we are getting the best bang for our buck, or is there a problem with massive overhead costs and inefficiencies all over the place. It's fine that they need more money, I mean it sucks that they do, but its ok so long as its a real need and not over inflated with bogus claims and over paid management/staff.

  6. No. If your car is at home, it won't accrue wear and tear.

    You must be young.

No. You're much more likely to get in an accident in a single occupancy car.

That attitude is why we're all breathing that same air.

lol ya, I must be. My car will incur wear and tear regardless, because I will drive it again some other place, it may not be that day, but it will be again some point soon. If it gets an extra 100 k on sunday instead of monday, I am not to worried about it.

Your right, I am more likely to get into an accident in a car than a bus, but I COULD get into an accident in either.

As for me being the reason we are all breathing the same air? lol ya, you got it, me driving to van every other weekend is what is causing van to be so polluted. You got me figured out lol

  7. No way you can park all day for 5-6 bucks unless you park once in an inconvenient lot and never move.

Also assuming you give no monetary value to your time, stress from driving or health from sitting in traffic. Also, there is the risk of accident that is much higher, and the cost of increased wear and tear on your car.

    Then, sure, it's worth it.

I pretty much park downtown somewhere if I am shopping and walk everywhere. If I am going to metro, parking is free. If I am going to the beach, parking is either free or $5. The wear and tear on my car will happen regardless. And the stress and health really make no difference. I can get into an accident on a bus just as well, and I am pretty much breathing the same air.

So, ya, its worth it. Certainly worth it if I am not going alone, which is more often than not.

  8. It's $21 for an all day transit pass from Mission, including the WCE. Are you sure you can drive around all day to and from Vancouver for less than half of that?

Yup. It would cost me 5-6 bucks for parking, and no more than $5-$10 in gas. Even if it cost me the same as transit, Im not sure I would take it. Not to mention, if you have another person with you, you are looking at $42 for the day. There is NO WAY that is worth the cost.

  9. Its gonna cost an extra 2.50 to use the Airport Line.

So It'll cost a traveler 6.25 to go from downtown to the Airport, with NO cheaper alternative.

(Since the 424 is planned to be taken out of service)

For a Family of 4, its probably better to take a Cab.

I never said I liked the cost of any of the transit in van. In fact I think its all over priced. I live in Mission and if I decided to take the sky train and public transit for the day, it would easily cost me double what I would pay if I just drove. That is NO incentive for me to take transit. BUT the Canada line is going to be used a lot and will be very useful none the less. If people don't like it, or think its to expensive, they can always drive.

I would absolutely park my car in slurrey or burnaby and take the sky train if it would be cheaper for me to do so (coming from Mission, or Maple Ridge or anywhere after the skytrain no longer goes). Its like the new golden ears bridge. Great bridge, im sure it will get plenty of use. But the cost is crazy to drive across. Its not likely I will ever take it. I do however have a transponder, JUST in case I do :P

  10. Very cool and about damn time the airport got a stop. I am sure the people going to and from YVR will be happy to have it. From what has been said, it may not be thee most ideal design and trains, it will certainly be extremely useful to a lot of people. Im glad its been done.

Thanks for all the posts Nitro.
