  1. Everyone needs to calm down with the hype on Podkolzin. You need to temper expectations, otherwise you will be disappointed.

I've been following this team long enough to remember watching tape on guys like Shirokov, Jensen, etc. and this board thinking they are going to immediately be impact players.

Benning is not a fool and will not part with a proven entity (like Boeser or Virtanen) for an unproven rookie.

Podkolzin will have to show his worth during camp just like everyone else.

  2. I really hope Gaunce can make the team this year as a 4C. He has more offensive upside than Richardson, and already has a big frame. Plus he could come in handy on the 2nd PP unit and during shootouts.

What concerns me is his point totals haven't risen since we drafted him. I know he played on a good team this year, we he seeing 2C or 3C duty?

  3. Chiarelli has the final say on who they pick but Benning makes most of the recommendations on who to draft.

Here's a description of Bennings job as AGM for the Bruins from NHL.com:

"In that position, he serves as an advisor to General Manager Peter Chiarelli on all matters pertaining to player evaluation, trades and free agent signings, in addition to assisting the General Manager in overseeing all individuals in their specific duties for the Bruins."

Player evaluation meaning he deals with the pro and amateur scouting. Chiarelli doesn't do everything himself.

Since becoming AGM in 2006 Jim Benning's draft record is as such:

Players who have played over 50 NHL games: (4)

    Joe Coulbourne

    Jordan Caron

    Tyler Seguin

    Dougie Hamilton

Here is a description of Fenton's job as AGM for Nashville from NHL.com:

"Now in his 16th season with the Predators, and his eighth as the club’s assistant general manager, Paul Fenton has been instrumental in bringing in many of Nashville’s core players, primarily through the draft, but also through trades and free agent signings."

Since becoming AGM in 2006 Paul Fenton's draft record is as such:

Players who have played over 50 NHL games: (10)

    Nick Spaling

    Jonathan Blum

    Colin Wilson

    Roman Josi

    Anders Lindback

    Gabriel Bourque

    Mattias Ekholm

    Craig Smith

    Ryan Ellis

    Seth Jones

I don't think this is a fair comparison. I'm sure over this time-frame that Nashville had alot higher picks than Boston did.

  4. Well, I do believe that this is a PR move by the ownership, but if you ask me, it's a damn good one.

In response to the fact that you need time to develop a strategy going into the draft, Lawrence Gilman has been retained by the organization. This is a smart move has he has the keys to the bus. He is the resident "capologist." He has the most knowledge of where players are at development wise in the organization. As well it's not like Aquilini fired all of the Canucks scouts. There is a wealth of knowledge at Trevor Linden's disposal.

I'm fairly certain that Gilman will be there at the draft table working with Trevor Linden, if not as the GM, then in his same capacity as the Assistant GM.

As for the timing of the firing/hiring. It all has to do with timing, and money. Of course Gillis was fired as a scapegoat, and from a business stand point, this happens all the time. No one should be surprised. I for one believe that Gillis did a great job in bringing together the complementary pieces needed to win a cup during the first few years he was tenured.

The Canucks need to save face, thats the brunt of it. Speaking of faces, making Trevor Linden the new poster boy, makes your face look great.

You pretty much nailed it with this post, well said. Hope all fans can read this post before deciding how they feel about this move.

  5. He could become a 70 point producer during this

Lucic in his best year only put up 60 points. I think with Kassian we are looking at a guy in the 40-50 point range.

Reason being, he is an inconsistent player, and he will most likely miss 5-10 games per season due to suspension.

He is now a repeat offender in the league, don't be surprised if his next suspension is 10 games.

  6. What scares me the most is that when Gillis first got here he kept stating how good of a franchise Detroit was and how he wants to copy it. After the SCF loss he stated he wanted to follow the Boston system. Now he is looking at the Ducks system????

I don't know about you guys, but I want management that is setting trends in this league, not following them.

  7. Remember when Quennville was available a few years ago? That was the time to make the change....

I have a feeling it will be Stevens since the Canucks already put it in their ear so they would spread the word about him. Every article this week in the Province has been about Stevens most likely being a "lock" for the head coaching position. What concerns me is how badly he shat the bed in Philly, and that he is a very defensive-minded coach.

  8. Good game for Gaunce. I'm glad he had 2 assists. It's great that he's scoring goals but I personally prefer to build a team around playmaking centres. Playmakers drive teams' offenses.

    Exhibit A: Ryan Kesler

  9. OK guys, I re-watched the highlights. I was clearly smoking something very strong last night.

Schroeder made some friggin' sweet passes. Could have had another assist on that bang-bang play where Raymond missed the net. That was a beautiful play btw.

I'm loving the chemistry on that line. Having Kassian floating around gives the defending team always something to worry about. As long as he drives to the net and creates havoc they will put up points.

Any since when did Raymond become better than average?? LOL
