  1. Shocking and sad news.  I liked Botch...he was colourful and opinionated, entertaining.  As a long time, frustrated and disappointed Canucks fan, when he ripped the Canucks, I felt like he was speaking for me.  RIP man.  Sincere condolences to his family.

These are false equivalencies.  Teams use logos that go with their names.  It's the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Edmonton Oilers and so on.  Montreal's logo is actually two Cs and a H -- their official name is Le Club de hockey Canadien, or CHC.  A double lined B represents the Boston Bruins, while the spokes were to signify Boston as a hub.  American physicist and poet Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. described the Massachusetts State House as the hub of the solar system, presumably because of Boston's significance in the American Revolutionary War and early U.S. history.

No one is saying that the team logo needs to be something exclusive to the area.  Otherwise none of Johnny Canuck, orca, or lumber references would make it.  What, you mean there are trees outside of British Columbia?

The Canuck equivalent would be if the Hurricanes used a racing car as its crest.  But isn't North Carolina most famous for its races?  Why can't the logo just symbolize the location?  Do you think it makes sense to use a car as the logo if you name the team hurricanes?  The team should've been named the Carolina Racers if that's what they wanted to use.

Florida is known for its swamps and crocodiles/ alligators.  Do you not think it's ridiculous if the Bolts used a crocodile stylized into a L as their crest?  What exactly is the difference between that and the orca?  The crocodile is native to the area, and the L represents Lightning, just like the orca is native to the coast of B.C., and the C represents Canucks.  There is no more relation between a whale and a Canadian than there is between a crocodile and a lightning.

You can use the stick in rink because the V signifies Vancouver, or you can use Johnny Canuck because he symbolizes the Canucks.  Or you can use JC with some sort of V symbol to represent the Vancouver Canucks.  JC can be redrawn, it doesn't have to look like it does now.

Here are all the logos in the NHL: http://www.sportslogos.net/teams/list_by_year/12019/2019_NHL_Logos/

Please point out one other logo that uses an animal or symbol that is completely unrelated to the team's name.  In fact, check out the other three major professional sports leagues in North America:

    NBA: http://www.sportslogos.net/teams/list_by_league/6/National_Basketball_Association/NBA/logos/

    NFL: http://www.sportslogos.net/teams/list_by_league/7/National_Football_League/NFL/logos/

    MLB: http://www.sportslogos.net/teams/list_by_year/42019/2019_MLB_Logos/

Out of 123 teams across four leagues, Canucks are the only ones that use an animal unrelated to its name.

Bingo.  Exactly my point.  A whale is not a Canuck.

We can agree to disagree. I wouldn't call the orca bad luck... we have had our most successful hockey with that uniform. And ya, orca bay doesnt own anymore but the orca is still very much a symbol of the north pacific and the west coast.

Symbol of the west coast?  So are cedar trees, salmon, rain and the ocean, but they have nothing to do with a Canuck and don't belong on the uniform.

The logo should match the nickname and a whale is not a Canuck.  EVERY other team in the NHL has a logo that fits the team name or city.  Except us...we still cling to a corporate symbol of the previous owner.  What a piece of crap.

Johnny Canuck or the Stick and Rink.   I ain't buying anything else.

I don't know about that nonsense with Calgary and Neal, but in many ways a Subban-to-Vancouver trade makes all kinds of sense:

    1) Vancouver desperately needs a top-pairing RHD...in fact, they've needed one for the entire history of the organization.

    2) Nashville needs to clear some salary, and with Ellis and Fabbro signed, PK is the obvious choice.

    3) There are pretty solid rumours that Benning tried to acquire PK before (from the Habs).

    4) PK enjoys - even thrives - on playing under the spotlight of a Canadian market.

    5) If Nashville re-signs Josi (likely), they will need to move one of their top-4 prior to the expansion draft.

    6) Nashville needs more prospects, particularly talented forwards. The #10 pick will likely be a good one.

    7) PK's trade value is likely at an all-time low. It may not take much more than the #10 pick.

    8) PK's contract only has 3 years remaining, so it won't interfere as much with the future of the team as pursuing a UFA.

    9) PK has no trade protection, so even if he'd rather play for a contender, he has no say.

Good argument here for PK, but I'd be very leery of using our #10 pick to get him.  That pick, if used on a D man, would likely yield a player who will play when PK's current deal is up.  I hope Benning plays hardball...Nashville needs to clear cap.  We're doing them a favour by taking this huge contract...the price has to be reasonable and not our first rounder this year.

-A hipster looking logger over a Killer Whale? come on, the Orca is one of the coolest animals on the planet. Perfect for a west coast team.

-Human Mascots are weird looking. Fin is a lot of fun, would hate to see him go.

-The Giants logo looks like JC and is a lot cooler looking than the Main St. resident running in skates logo.

-We have had too many changes.

We have the most promising group of player in years. Don't mess with the mojo! no need to fix things that are not broken.

Yes, Johnny Canuck.  THAT is a Canuck.  What does a whale have to do with a canuck...nothing.  To state the obvious, a logo should match the team nickname.  Ours does not and should be changed.

So do the Canucks with their orca shaped like a C.  And their original stick in rink is a C too.  I guess the difference is MTL and VAN Cs are about their names, where as Calgary’s is about their city.   Not really copying anyone at this point given we’ve played this long with a C anyways ...

Then change the &^@#ing name to Vancouver Orcas.  Now that would make sense.  Otherwise, A canuck is not a whale.  Dump the orca already.  Worst logo in the league.

4 years draft rights on European players.

Or more technically: 4 years rights for any player drafted while under license to a team from an IIHF member organization that signed the European transfer agreement. ;)

Thank you.  Excellent.  EP can season in Sweden for 3 more years then. ;) He should be ready then!

  8. My only concern is his contract status.  A drafted player who does not sign for 2 years becomes draft eligible again.  Can this happen with EP?

Otherwise, no concerns.  He's still a kid and Canucks will suck again next year.  What's the rush?  He'll get bigger and stronger and be that much better in 2019-20.

How are they bad lol?  Your bananas.

Oh by the way; Bo won't be captain.  I would bet money on it.  We should (if allowed) make a cash pool for cdc for if he will be C. Do a vote and bet a few dollars.  Prob not allowed though unless overseen by sports action.

Olli and Elias could easily be A's and Pettersson is a legitimate contender for the C.  He will be in the mix likely with Boeser, Horvat and possibly this years pick.  I personally don't like d as captains unless your name is Lidstrom.

wtf?  Pettersen for captain?  How ridiculous.  He won't even make the Canucks next year.  How about let the kid develop, at his own pace and let him become a good NHLer before even thinking about the C.  The Oilers made McDavid captain after his first year....a huge mistake.  They should have just let the kid play...now he has to deal with being captain of a losing team at age 21.  No way I want that for any of our young players.

If McDavid is the bait, then I really hope Jim is the big dumb fish.  That would be AWESOME!  I would easily trade anything for McDavid.

This topic is about Elias Petterson.

Moderator.....enough already.  Can you tell these guys to please shut the &^@# up about McDavid.

    thank you

Have to remember he's not just a "third line center" but is one of the top-minute forwards every game because he plays in nearly all situations.

And all that skill helped us to a 29th place finish.

At this point, we're 3-5 years away from being competitive, so Sutter is just a placeholder.  He'll be irrelevant and likely gone when we're competitive again.

Agreed.  Should have made Miller the captain of the team after that game. Clearly he is the vet that sticks up for his teamates.

I was against signing Miller at the time as i wanted our club to bottom out.....

But i can easily state - Miller has led this team and just been a  great Vet for the kids to develop under.

Bang on.  Miller certainly earned his salary in his 3 years with us and has been a great leader.  One of Benning's first signings and maybe the best.

  13. Us Canuck fans are such a fragile bunch...we are so used to first round busts that any little sign of trouble and we're in panic mode.  And I get that.  I would have loved to see OJ perform like Chabot did with Canada.  Maybe OJ will surprise us next year at training camp.  If Werenski can make Columbus at 19 maybe OJ can do the same.  Fingers crossed!

  14. Going to be an interesting negotiation with Tryamkin.  He's still raw with tons of potential...what is that worth?  I"d say somewhere between 2 and 2.5 million for per season for as long as he will sign for is about right...same as Hutton.  I wouldn't give him Sbisa type money yet.

They also have to sign Bo and Gudbranson to new deals.  Guddy is going to want a big payday, but I'm not sure he's worth more than Tanev ($4.5 mill).

I don't think there has been a player on the current Canucks who has been as hyped as Tryamkin, besides the Sedins.

Hyped? By whom?  We hardly heard anything about him until he signed his contract.

  16. Obviously Higgins and Burrows are not the "future" of the Canucks, so moving them is logical at some point.  Problem is contracts and cap hits and lack of production.  I think Burrows has two more years at $4.5 per ...that is not an easy contract to move, unless we take back a bad contract...and what is really gained from doing that?

  17. What do people expect TL to say? "Oh yeah, we're going to ask Edler to waive right away...just pass the word on to him will you? We don't think he's any good, but if Detroit wants him, they can have him.

The team just acquired a GM and have barely had time to start evaluating the team. Right now they are focusing on the draft and probably some sort of Kesler trade.

Again, the article implies that TL wouldn't ask Elder to waive, it doesn't actually quote him. I suspect that TL would say wonderful things about every one of the players when talking to the press. He's a classy guy and would never discuss management plans with outsiders.

It's a long summer ahead and there is plenty of time to make adjustments to the team.

Good post! Relax people...hae you ever heard a GM come out and say..."we don't like so and so and we're planning to trade him". It never happens, for a lot of good reasons. Patience folks...the Canucks won't be remade in a day...it's going to take some time. Next step is the draft and that is 3+ weeks away still.

  18. Good riddance! Finally...should have fired him at least a year or more ago.

Now we don't have to listen to anymore arrogant assinine interviews from Gillis..thank god.

Note to Canucks: bring in someone with credibility and who is well regarded in the NHL. Time to change the image of the Canucks from being the "most hated" to a respected organization. It starts at the top and this is a good change.
