  1. It's interesting once you break it down by points... and rough estimations based on somewhat hopeful / historic totals

    Pettersson - 82   H.Sedin - 102

    Boeser - 70         D.Sedin - 94

    Horvat - 65          Kesler - 73

    Ferland - 40        Burrows - 48

    Miller - 60           Samuelsson - 50

    Sutter - 30          Malholtra - 30

    Pearson - 40      Raymond - 39

    Roussel - 30       Torres - 29

    Beagle - 20         Lapierre - 12

    Baerstchi - 35     Hansen - 29

    Virtanen - 25       Higgins - 28

    Leivo - 25            Glass - 10

    Edler - 35          Ehrhoff - 50

    Myers - 35         Edler - 33

    Hughes - 30       Salo - 7 (hurt)

    Tanev - 10 (hurt) Bieksa - 22

    Stecher - 23       Hamhuis - 23

    Benn                  Tanev - 1 (rookie)

I'd say the Sedins obviously were the best in the game at this point and that's the difference maker along with #1 D... But the rest of the roster I think is the same and could be potentially better IF some guys make a step forward. A couple years of experience and a few more higher end prospects entering the lineup and line chemistry and we just might have a team.

  2. The '9 games' is overrated by far too many on here. We're likely to have a roster full of waiver eligible players next season, so who would we waive to make room for Virtanen?

Of course, if Benning thinks he's been good enough in preseason to potentially make it, I think he gets the chance to play regardless of the number of games. He won't just get 9 games because people want to see him in an NHL game though.

How about trade a winger or two. Higgins/Burrows/Vrbata/Kassian/Hansen

  3. its been a month, lets not get too far ahead of ourselves

I forgot baertschi too. Not the hugest virtanen fan but our prospect pool just wouldn't have any balance with shink, baer, and nylander/ehlers. We'd be the montreal canadiens pre 2012 lol

  4. Not to be pro virtanen or anything but with the emergence of shinkaruk wouldn't that have made nylander redundant? I think shinkaruk can be a better pro than nylander.... IMO shink has more heart and tenacity

  5. Lets hope he follows michael ferlands development

    draft +1:56pts 56gms

    draft +2:96pts 68gms --> 47 goals!

boy can skate and hit lolol. Can't believe they stole him in the 5th round! Should've been top 10!!!!

  6. Also, don't desiboy and Z Kassian kinda fall in that school of thought? That's the impression I get.

Depends what you consider a bust. I think he'll easily play 100+ games in the nhl. But I believe he's going to be a fringe 2 liner and mostly a 3rd liner. So for me, with the 6th pick I consider that a bad pick.

When I watch him play I think of a bigger, more physical, less falling mason raymond.

  7. I know Virtanen hasn't had a stellar year but I am still so god damn excited for this kid. He's got everything that is needed to be successful in the NHL. His shot and his skating are elite which I think, along with his size, is what will put him in the NHL next year. His hockey IQ is really good despite what some people think. He had more assists this year than last even though he played fewer games. I think that is really important as we all know he can score goals and now we know he can pass the puck just as well. He also missed training last off season due to the shoulder surgery so a whole summer of training will make him that much stronger, that much better.

I'm getting ahead of myself yeah I know, but I think if we put him on the 1st PP next year with the Sedins it could be lethal. You could put him either on the half boards for the one timer on his strong side (where Ovechkin posts up) and with his elite shot he could hammer the puck home OR you could plant his ass in front of the net and cause havoc for the goalie.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself but based on what I've seen I think he will be in the NHL next year. I only saw one game of him live but he impressed me to no end. Combine that with what he did at the World Juniors I think he'll be ready next year. Small sample size I know, but he was so god damn impressive.

A reminder of what he did in the World Juniors as I believe some people need it:

lol at 0:24 for not passing to two open guys

  8. If only hockey were as simple as basic math, we'd all be all stars.

Okay how about playing the odds. It is a HIGH percent chance that a ppg player in juniors won't be on the 1/2 lines in the nhl. Look at gaunce and jensen. Both players were ppg and didn't get any better from their draft years. Jensen looks like a bust and hopefully gaunce can be a great 4th liner with 3rd line spot duty with injuries.

  9. Basically, the concern about Horvat is now eliminated, so now we have to be concerned about Virtanen. Personally, I see no cause for concern. Virtanen is going to be a special player.

Concern about horvat? We were worried his 74 pts in 54gms would translate to above a 3rd liner.

Now virtanen with 52 pts in 50 gms.

The concern is not even comparable. Bo was a playoff stud and defensively responsible. If jake doesn't turn around in the whl next year with 1.5ppg then I can't see him as anything more than a 3rd liner like kreider. You need to put up more points in the whl to put up points in the nhl. Not stat watching... just basic math

  10. Sven B got 2 goals that were questionable NHL goals. I liked the 2nd best as he fended off the dman to gain position. Both should have been stopped IMO. Not a put down as I thought he played well positionally throughout the game. His play has to make WD scratch his head over the composition of his 3rd line going into playoffs. I assume Higgins-Bonino-Vrbata are the 2nd and Horvat's stays the same. We might see Higgins and Sven B switch up depending on circumstance and depending on Matthias's health.

What stood out on my radar last night was Ronalds Kennins play. While I thought Sven B's goals were marginal I also thought Kennin's could easily have had 2 goals. His potential could be a serious wild card during a series. He is handling the puck well and his acceleration is 2nd to none. Playoffs give him a opportunity but no matter how it plays out he will be something next year.

Are you seriously undermining his goals? Geez prospects can't win. Is it the first five hole goal you've ever seen in the nhl? On the second one he obviously went there again cause the gaping hole. marginal goals is a flipping paradox... a goal is a goal is a goal :picard::picard::picard::picard::picard::picard:

  11. Well, take it as you will, and I being one of those 'extremely negative' people am a little frustrated.

The way I see it was heading into the draft we already had a plethora of prospects who could fill in third and second line roles as they develop. What we're missing in a big way is a #1 D and first line forwards. Now don't get me wrong Virtanen still has that potential, but his offensive ceiling isn't close to the next two draftees. We didn't lose in 2011 because the Bruins beat us into submission, and we didn't suck last year because we lost against the big bad teams of the West. We lost because we couldn't score. That, was a direct result of the Sedins aging and us not having the offensive depth to support them.

Virtanen was not BPA in terms of offence. He was drafted for his size, his hitting, and perhaps a little bit because of his home-town ties.

What's been floating around in his defence? Even when he isn't producing he's contributing on the ice. But isn't that something you expect from any top end forward? Not every offensively skilled guy is going to turn into Phil Kessel. Look at Gaudreau, this friggin midget saved the game for the Flames yesterday, making three or four key blocks and stick lifts in the final minute of play.

Now I'm trying my hardest to like Virtanen, but many of the knocks on him by scouts from the draft have yet to shed by this kid. A lack of offensive progression has made it even harder still.

Here's to hoping that he just needs a change of scenery and somehow he manages to produce at a higher level at the pro level (AHL/NHL) but I'm not holding my breath. I think he'll top out as decent second liner, and that's fine for what he brings to the table. But I think given the position the Canucks are currently in prospects wise, we need to start looking at who will take over for the Sedins. McCann? Virtanen? Those are ridiculous expectations.

In fact, I think the same thing is going to happen to the genius who drafts Lawson Crouse relatively high this year.

    I think I'll dub it 'Virtanen'd'.

Exactly... you don't use a 6th pick on a fast skater with intangebles. You draft him cause he has all that and can score. I really hate the pick but I'm a canuck fan and really want him to turn it around. It could be his shoulder injury didn't give him time in the off season to work on his shot and he doesn't have the accuracy or the faith in it anymore? Last year his shot was lights out... this year all I hear is board clanging

  12. ok ill fix it

    Sedin - Sedin - Kassian

    Baertschi - Bonino - Vrbata

    Matthias - Horvat - Burrows

    Kenins - Richardson - Dorsett

    Edler - Tanev

    Sbisa - Hamhuis

    Bieksa - Corrado

    trades:

    jensen, hansen, Higgins for picks and draft;

Kylington, G.Carlsson, Chlapik, Hintz, Gagne, and Malgin

Dorsett will leave and Hansen would slot in 4th RW. I hope we resign matthias and get rid of higgins but I could also see it as the other way around and we don't resign him and higgins slots in as 3rd line LW
