  1. 1) the Add Fare was planned since 2004.

    2) Originally, all riders going in and out/west and east would have had to pay the Add Fare. They've changed it to only east, which is considerably better.

Originally, all riders going in out/west and east would have had to pay $2.50.

They've changed it to only east at $5.00, which is considerably the same.

  2. Smart Cards are really effective when everyone has it.

    Like in Hong Kong.

I don't see it working as well in Vancouver as it can in Hong Kong.

People here have the need to drive because its so easy to obtain, its faster and its cheap.

Therefore not everyone will own a smart card thus Translink will need to setup Two separate fare systems the entire time and it'll just be a mess.

I know Hong Kong also has two system, card and ticket, but most of the residences own one.

Here, I would say only 40% will get one thus its not feasible to implement.

  3. TRANSLINK'S FUNDING STABILIZATION PLAN

Extra $130 million a year funded by:

    - Fuel tax increase of three cents per litre. Would generate $65 million.

    - Fare hikes of five to seven per cent in 2010 and 2013 (on top of two per cent annual hikes for inflation). Discounted prepaid tickets and passes would immediately jump 10 per cent next year. Worth $30 million more.

    - Balance was to be funded by higher sales tax on pay parking, but that's no longer possible due to B.C.'s shift to an HST. Province has said it will make up this portion of the funding gap.

    Plan delivers:

    - Service frozen at 2009 levels, new services for Olympics, including third SeaBus, removed after Games.

    - Seven extra West Coast Express cars to lengthen trains.

    - 48 new SkyTrain cars arriving will go into service, option to buy 24 more won't be exercised.

    - No new rapid transit lines.

    - Only minimal repairs on many fronts.

    - Roads funding essentially frozen.

    - Cycling funding cut in half to $3 million per year.

    - Pattullo replacement, smart cards and gates, and SeaBus replacements.

    - Five per cent cut to TransLink administration

So I guess no UBC line? and no evergreen Line?

This province is starting to become "best place on earth" to the "worse place on earth"

    Time to move out everyone!!

  4. Today, on the way home from Work, I noticed the ETA sign had a 20 minutes gap between trains.

This was at Bridgeport, I came from YVR and the sign had Waterfront at 0 minutes, Waterfront at 20 minutes and waterfront at 24.

What happened? Did a train break down or something?

  5. lol its almost scarely to know that the canada line is packed already with passengers and they wont get new trains for a while

Just let it settle down, everyone probably crammed on the Canada to "test" their commute.

It'll die down once everyone finds a better alternative.

Alot of people complain about everything but in the end, things work out works out.

People complaining about the 98 B line probably didn't know a number 10 existed.

  6. Meh. I've traveled to several countries, and it seems that tourists do one of two things:

    1) already have a plan for getting from the airport to their destination (ie. they did their research at home and they probably know about the line), or

    2) ask a tourism desk, in which case the guy will probably direct them to the Canada line.

As long as there's some sort of signage, it's probably not going to be a huge problem. Do the signs at least have a small picture of a train on them?

I know. Most travelers do that. say 70%

But in airport planning you must keep it simple so 99% know where to go.

People always ask "wheres the train to downtown?" (so they do know Canada Line exists)

"Trains to Downtown Vancouver/Richmond" is much better than "Canada Line"

Even the old signs read "Public Transit" directing passengers for the 424.

  7. I went to the airport today to pick up my mom and I think the Canada line from YVR is already in operation since I saw some passengers riding it. I thought Canada line would open on August 17th.

Actually, today is the Canada Line private Family day.

So Translink employees, SNC Lavalin and YVR employees get to ride it before everyone else.

  8. I think Employers should let Employees work from home (Cisco VPN)

I think supermarkets / stores should let Customers shop from home (ex: futureshop)

I think fast food places should let Customers order online and eat at home (Pizza Hut, Boston etc..)

In conclusion, you have no excuse to use transit or drive anywhere.

  9. Very cool and about damn time the airport got a stop. I am sure the people going to and from YVR will be happy to have it. From what has been said, it may not be thee most ideal design and trains, it will certainly be extremely useful to a lot of people. Im glad its been done.

Thanks for all the posts Nitro.

Its gonna cost an extra 2.50 to use the Airport Line.

So It'll cost a traveler 6.25 to go from downtown to the Airport, with NO cheaper alternative.

(Since the 424 is planned to be taken out of service)

For a Family of 4, its probably better to take a Cab.
