  1. and he grounds to second..he has been popping up and grounding out all day.

But he still managed to win it!! Had to turn it off after 14 to go to work so I just finished watching jays in 30. Pretty damn unreal pitching from both teams!

Also going to the game tomorrow.. will be front row right behind the boy's dugout. So stoked for the series!!

  2. Rasmus has been absolutely horrible since coming off the DL..he strikes out at least 2-3 times a game...he isnt major league quality at all,,he used to be one of my favorite players on the Jays but now all I want to see is him gone..what a waste of talent.

Buehrle has been awful as of recent too. But this current game is unreal, if anybody's watching.. 2 out rally for the win right now in the 13th. Been a great game to watch so far! Bases are juiced for JBats!!

  3. Too bad the Jays couldn't upgrade their staff. I'm guessing the cost of an upgrade would have been too steep as most conversations probably started and ended with Stroman and Sanchez. And really, that would have accomplished nothing as you would've been filling one whole while creating another. Another trades probably wouldn't have been much of an upgrade, so what's the point?

Taking my dad to the game in Seattle on the 11th. Pretty stoked, meaningful baseball in August, for once.

I'm doing the exact same thing! Staying for the whole series, though. So stoked! Both teams are playing well and it's guaranteed to be good baseball.

  4. 3 straight wins now! Stroman pitched an unreal game today. With Lind and Edwin expected back Monday, that'll really help keep them in the division / wild card race. Sanchez had an unreal debut as well yesterday with 6 up/down, the rookies are looking great for the team. Hoping to never see Rogers, Santos and Mills pitch for this team ever again as well.

They're 0.5 games back of a spot, not sure why the bandwagon is near empty. Definitely not complaining.

  5. This team is just flat out painful to watch....I just cant do it...I try, I really do..but they are just so bad right now.

Bats are seriously needed, soon. Unfortunately, the injuries just continue to pile. Melky, JBats, Lind, Edwin, Lawrie, jesus the list goes on. That review was brutal too. I think if they would have gotten the call right they could have made an attempt to tie the game with JBats on 2nd and a little inning momentum. If they continue to be screwed on this I hope management makes a comment.

I think the bottom half of the inning would have been different too, they would have played more conservative instead of risking the winning run / insurance.

  6. I may have to eat my words on this one..but face it..when the starting pitcher gives up 8 runs in an inning and a half you tend to be fatalistic..I have seen this team play over the last 2 weeks and its nothing to write home about and I am a huge Blue Jay fan..I just call em as I see em..but props to the comeback.

It may be that way with the last two series, but Cincy's missing all solid middle inning relief in the bullpen and you can probably expect every game to have at least 10+ runs as long as we're letting starters like Hendricks or Redmond pitch. They're both garbage

  7. To be fair. it's more than acceptable to rip apart a team that's down 8-0 in the second inning the game after getting swept. This comeback though, I love the fight they're showing. Feels a bit like the edge they had when they kept winning.

I seem to always catch the guy being a downer early in the game though. It's acceptable to rip on somebody that early in a ball game, especially since it's a tie game now. Literally anything can happen, like that 8 run inning Cinci had.

  8. With the 9th pick in the draft, TBJ selected RHP Jeff Hoffman.

With the 11th pick, they selected Max Pentecost, C. (compensation for Phillip Bickford -- unsigned)

Unreal picks! Hoffman was supposed to go top 3 before his TJ surgery! It's a bit of a gamble but with rehab and training I figure he'll be a great player in a few years. Long read about the two ahead.

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays have fallen victim to plenty of Tommy John surgeries over the years, but during the 2014 First-Year Player Draft the surgical procedure actually worked in their favour.

Promising college right-hander Jeff Hoffman was projected to go in the Top 3 of the Draft until he suffered an elbow injury during late April. He required surgery and as a result will be out of action for at least the next 12 months.

That caused his stock to drop into the middle of the first round and all of a sudden the Blue Jays were in the mix for a pitcher they previously thought would be unavailable. When he was there for the taking at No. 9, Toronto jumped at the opportunity.

"We've done a lot of research since his surgery, really poured over the medicals and poured over everything with him," Blue Jays director of amateur scouting Brian Parker said. "We've done a lot of background work and we're comfortable with where everything stands with him.

"We just felt the talent was too good to walk away from. This guy was going go top three, top four, picks prior to his injury and we just felt like even with the Tommy John this was a good gamble for us." The Draft continues on Friday with Rounds 3-10. The MLB.com pregame show begins at 12:30 p.m. ET, with exclusive coverage of Rounds 3-10 beginning at 1 p.m. ET.

Hoffman typically throws in the mid-90s but has the ability to hit 98 mph with his fastball. He also possesses a very effective curveball and a changeup that is already considered to be a plus pitch by a lot of scouts. The product of East Carolina was ranked the 13th-best prospect by MLB.com prior to the Draft and there's a belief he could develop into a frontline starting pitcher.

A few months ago, Hoffman was linked to the Astros with the No. 1 selection. There wasn't much hope that he would slide to Toronto at No. 9, but one benefit of a rather large scouting department is that the club still monitored all of his starts.

Parker watched Hoffman in the Cape Cod League last summer and again this spring while he was pitching for East Carolina. The Blue Jays had someone at each of his starts and became very familiar with him even though the original expectation was never that he would end up in Toronto.

"He's a three-pitch guy, fastball, breaking ball, changeup and honestly we've seen all three plus," Parker said. "He's a plus-athlete with command. It's a power arm with pitchability and he has stuff. There are a lot of things to like with this guy and one thing we target is athleticism in pitchers and this guy fits that to a T."

The Blue Jays also will have quite a bit of leverage in the upcoming contract negotiations. Hoffman is a college junior and will be motivated to reach an agreement instead of being forced back into the Draft as a senior when he's still working to come back from a lengthy rehab stint.

The recommended slot value for the ninth pick is $3,080,800 and Toronto has an overall bonus pool of $9,458,500 to use in the first 10 rounds. If the Blue Jays can save even a little bit of money early in the Draft it could then be used on a player who has a lot of upside but comes with signability concerns in later rounds.

The willingness of early picks to sign has been a hot-button topic in Toronto since 2012. Toronto has been unable to reach an agreement with its top overall selection in two of the past three years. First rounders Tyler Beede and Phil Bickford, but opted to attend college instead of signing a contract and turning professional.

Parker understandably dismissed the notion that either Hoffman at No. 9 or college catcher Max Pentecost at No. 11 were financially motivated. Instead, he said the Blue Jays took the simple approach of selecting the best overall players.

"This is an athletic, power, college arm that offers up even more upside once he gets into pro ball," Parker said. "It's a guy we liked coming in, we thought for most of the spring we wouldn't even get a chance to take this player.

"When the injury happened, it was something we jumped on and made sure we did all that we could researching the medical, getting with the kid, and everything. It's something we're excited about."

Blue Jays pick catcher Pentecost at No. 11

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays selected college catcher Max Pentecost with the 11th overall pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. Pentecost was generally regarded as the top catcher available. That title could have gone to Seattle's No. 6 selection Alex Jackson, but he's expected to transition to the outfield.

That likely won't be necessarily for Pentecost, who is believed to have the defensive skills required for the position. According to various scouting reports, he has the athleticism and arm strength, but could still use some improvement in his ability to receive.

Pentecost required surgery to repair a stress fracture in his right arm as a high school senior, but that didn't stop the Rangers from taking him in the seventh round three years ago. He reportedly almost signed, but ultimately eventually made the decision to go to Kennesaw State.

The 21-year-old becomes the highest selected player from Kennesaw in the Draft's history. That title previously belonged to right-hander Chad Jenkins, who was taken by Toronto with the 20th overall pick in 2009. Jenkins is currently a reliever on the big league club.

Pentecost reportedly has above-average speed for a catcher and projects to hit for average at the Major League level. He also has some power, but is generally considered as the type of player who will hit the gaps as opposed to registering a lot of home runs.

The 21-year-old was the second player taken in the first round by Toronto. The Blue Jays also grabbed college right-hander Jeff Hoffman with the ninth pick. The recommended slot value for Pentecost's selection is $2,888,300 and the Blue Jays have a bonus pool total of $9,458,500.

  9. 2011 Cup loss

    2012 first round exit

    2013 first round exit

    Coach fired

    2014 no playoffs

    GM fired

    Coach fired

    no change in players

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting the same result.

Coaching, much like goaltending has never been this team's problem

Interesting to see when / if any players are actually moved since the common denominator in this mess is folks...unfortunately, the players

blame coaches all you want, blame torts all you want. Torts saw a SOFT TEAM PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY, when he came in here.

he assessed the competition and realized with this lineup his players are going to have to learn to play tougher physically and mentally if they want to win a cup - thus he tried to use the regular season to teach them to play the way they need to, to actually win...which they simply whined about and wilted like the wimps hey are...

if you disagree, you certainly haven't watched the Anaheim/Dallas series, the LA/SJ series, the way Boston plays

just because he has a team full of whiney pufters was not his fault, its the team full of whiney old pufters...

    wrong decision

Breath of fresh air, haven't seen this much common sense on here before! This message board is full of idiots, the team is stale. Torts should have gotten another year.

  10. Because this will start another goalie controversy? Duh...

I never said it would, I said why worry who's starting. We have two great goalies so I'm not worried who's playing. It was mentioned on sportsnet two nights ago Lu had jetlag anyways, there's nothing to look into here.

  11. Burr is hurt again.

Alex Burrows of the Vancouver Canucks is injured. Again.

The good thing for him and the Canucks is the National Hockey League is on its Olympic break, so he does have time to heel up. The injury, according to Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun, is a sprained hand, suffered during a scuffle with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel last Saturday – the final game before the league shut down for Sochi.

He might as well just pack it in now for the season.
