Not have put myself in the position to have my ass on the line? Sorry but Gillis dug his own grave without the foresight to drop a ladder before he was done digging.
We all know AV was a scapegoat, in the end firing AV was too little too late. Terrible handling of many personnel decisions, not least of which was handing the Sedins a contract that could potentially cripple this franchise short term as yet another example of how he tried to save his ass from the fire.
Sedins should have been re-upped a year at a time, not given a 4 year contract without a plan in place to better compliment them with players capable of supporting them as they age.
Here's to the new GM (hopefully Benning) and hoping he has the wherewithal to properly compliment this core as we move into the youth movement age.
Soooo your saying having a different contract for the Sedins would have saved his job? What if next year they are back to the 100 point players? I don't understand how their contracts would be crippling or have anything to do with why AV got fired.
I believe AV and GMMG were both done after the 2012 season, just a matter of time. History has the coach always going first and if the team does not respond bye bye GM. Sh!t rolls downhill.
I just didn't see any other option. Same core that made the finals get swept in first round the following year. Made sense to try a quick change to get them back into contention. Rather than re-building when the core were still young enough to compete for the cup.

Some think that Kassian is the playmaker he needs
It's a good thing the Canucks don't try this then. Seems like when a line starts doing well torts splits them up.

What would you have done if you were GM and your ass was on the line?

Nazzy stepping down as GM at Modo.
Bob Nicholson stepping down as President at Hockey Canada.
Trev rumours today.
All these things that seemed to be mutually exclusive a few days ago suddenly may not be.
Totally agree

Sure would like to see Torts put Jensen back with Burrows. Funny how they were doing so good just to be split up.

Canucks lose 7-0 . Anaheim exposes the Canucks for the truly mediocre, fragile team they are as opposed to one of the elite. AGAIN
Canucks win 7-0 after reading your douche post and slam it in your face.

The OP has the point. All you guys saying "Kassian is still young", GUYS. He's been here two years and has been next to useless. He's played with the twins countless times and has never shown dominance outside of a couple games. We need to learn to expect more from this kid. The honeymoon is over. Kass needs to perform.
I love reading people bashing our younger players who are still developing, then that player has a great game.
If you can't see Kass's potential unfolding you have your hate blinders on. He will get better, I'm hoping just for consistency, the points will come.
Sure like to see less sh!t talking about our younger players and just support your team.

Kassian has done nothing bad of late and one crypt keeper article later and we're all on the Kassian hate bandwagon again???? Canucks fan logic lol
What's funny about this is you could say the same thing about 90% of the team right now.

@ the people thinking this is all Gillis' fault.
This is the same guy that got us Stanton, Santo and Richardson during the off season. In December we went 12-1-2. Where was his credit for that? And how does a guy sitting up in the box so dramatically affect production and defense on a minute by minute basis?
Stop just blaming someone because you need a scapegoat. Think about what's going on and what has changed. You might actually have some interesting opinions then instead of this mind-blowing idiocy.
Wow...... You baffle me! Is this not the GM's team? WTF would you do? This team was supposed to go in a different direction as MG stated and what has he done? This is a business and he is sitting back watching it sink.
Don't feed me the his hands are tied BS either. He made those contracts he can make them disappear.

I wonder what Shawn Matthias is thinking right now

I like kassian
Think Kass is tired of this too

Lol........ No guys MG did a great job. This is our new direction. Our core players that aren't injured are doing great.

You can't simple make "BOLD" moves by switching third/forth liners. Our core has played like sh!t, Kes wants out, there is no enthusiasm, no heart and soul in any of our guys right now. I find myself reading while a game is on. Watch the first ten minutes, see the boys really don't care, and read. This has Calgary written all over it. Edler-"I don't want a trade" well sorry but your bad plays and sloppy defensive zone play says other wise. Where is JS? Has he even been playing? The only noticeable player for me in the last 10 games has been Eddie Lack, Sestito also. That's sad, TOM SESTITO!!
This is a business, we saw regression after the cup run, soooooooo we fired AV. Time for a change, Torts will put this team back to where it was. Nope. Now MG realizes this won't happen it's time for a re-tool, but you have to move the players, not just Kes. If aqua man won't let you do your job, find another one. Life sucks get a helmut.
The team can not wait for our players to tell management when they can be traded. "I will not ask a player with an NTC if they want to waive". Well MG that was ultimately your decision in the first place by signing them. Either fix the situation or move on so Someone else can. There is no time in business, it's about making decisions NOW and bettering the business. The longer we drag this out, less profit, less spending on owner ships part for getting better players, = no playoffs = owners big payday down the tubes. These guys sure do know how to make this an unnecessary "PROCESS"

Can't see the Canucks getting the type of return at draft day as they would have today. Think Gillis may repeat and settle for less on draft day cause he can't get a deal done. May want to take some people skills classes when he's not on the golf course. I feel like it's a sad day in Canuck nation.
-
Good luck Lou, thanks for all the stellar stymies and twitter laughs.
-
Just hope MG hasn't pissed away all offers and likely to get lesser at draft day. Tomorrow will tell.
-
The whole point is he could put a team over the top with a cap friendly contract for 2 more years. His value shouldn't be higher in a less critical time.
THIS!! Forget the draft or off season his value is at it's tops NOW.
-
The core is all NTCs, no blowing up going to happen, sorry.
Maybe after seeing this effort, MG will actually grow a pair and ask who they would waive for
-
I really like this trade. Was hoping to get "bigger and younger" but maybe this will by simply opening a spot. Sure helps with our battered blue-line.

If we send Edler the other way, it would be Alex Edler for Ryan O'Reilly straight up. There's no need to add more - history tells us that. Whether you guys like it or not, Edler is a legitimate top 4 defenseman and can play top minutes. He would be the #1 or #2 in Colorado. Just look at what Colorado paid up for Erik Johnson a few years back:
COL: Erik Johnson + Jay McClement
STL: Chris Stewart + Kevin Shattenkirk
If anything, I would expect something similar to that effect. ROR has some baggage of holding out and having to be paid at least $6.5 million next season. Meanwhile, Edler is locked up for his prime years at a reasonable $5.0 million. Considering this, I am not sure if there is a team in the NHL that can offer up as good a player as Edler for ROR. I think we should aim to get a 2nd player back in return, McGinn, who also turns RFA this summer.
COL: Alex Edler + Dale Weise + Brendan Gaunce
VAN: Ryan O'Reilly + McGinn
Gaunce becomes very expendable when you consider that we are getting ROR back in return, and we have Horvat and Cassels. But at the very least, Edler for O'Reilly straight up. But I would try to get McGinn added on by throwing in a couple additional players/prospects/picks.
YES PLEASE!!!!
[Draft] VAN selects Jake Virtanen 6th Overall

I would defend any kid drafted into the NHL from some butt hurt fan by calling them a bust.
He is a first round pick that is ours and a real fan would support that. Not go onto some internet blog sight and bash him.
You have to expect real fans are going to bash trolls.
