Unfortunately waivers exist, and that would mean we'd likely lose a player for no reason. Jonah will get there in a couple years, especially if he has a few more nights like this one

He doesn't need waivers.... and he wasn't even signed yet...

He is on an ELC which does burn a year of his deal at the 10th game. But of course he's playing on the same ELC in the AHL so it's not a factor in this case as it's the 10th pro North American game. Only if he were to go back to junior or be playing on another team's contract like if he was overseas (i.e when Jensen played for AIK) would the slide rule apply. Even then it's only up to the age of 20, where Stecher is 22.

Wow that's a very clear and precise explanation. Thanks.

  3. They should do a rookie defenseman and rookie forward award.  It's unfortunate Hutton's rookie year is the same as McDavid and Eichel.

Just being in the same conversation as those 2 for the Calder is already a great accomplishment for any rookie. Especially a 5th round pick Dman.

  4. There weren't any character issues and it was mostly related to less than expected offensive totals like uselessstats said.

I also recall McCann saying he was working on his defensive side of the game more that season. He wanted to work on becoming a better 2 way player because he knew that's what's needed for the next level. He felt his offensive game was good so he took that season to be more defensively responsible. Hence the lower than expected points production and the drop in draft. Lucky for us.

Boeser is another sniper coming in. Looks like JB is targeting players that can really rip the puck.

I am not 100% sure but I think McCann's situation was similar to Cassels. In his draft year, he was more relied on centering a defensive 3rd line for SSM. Due to that deployment and lack of offensive numbers, his ranking dropped a bit and was eventually picked up by us at no.24.

  5. Zhuk a two way puck hound. Hell, he's already better than Vey. Getzlaf took a while to grow into his body. I think he's like Bo that way.

Until Zhukenov posted similar numbers to Vey in the AHL and CHL, no way is Zhukenov better than Vey. Vey posted some amazing numbers in the CHL and respectable numbers in the AHL. Until he reached numbers close to the ones posted by Vey, no way can you statistically compare the two and say Zhukenov is a better player than Vey.

What is your connection with Zhukenov? You seem to have a man-crush of some sort on him. Do you know him in person or have you seen him play a lot? Just curious to know what you seem to see in him.

  6. id try to get him back over here maybe after his season is done, join the comets for a playoff run and then if he plays well give him a one way nhl deal.

I totally agree his ahl time in Chicago was no good at all, We got swedes still on the team maybe they can influence him to come back for a chance at a nhl roster spot?

Problem is we have these same Swedes with us for quite a while. If he intended to stay or if our Swedes can persuade him to stay, it will be done at that time and not now. The boat for Rodin has sailed. Wish him luck in Sweden.

I know Shinkaruk and Vey and Baerschi haven't been cracked our NHL team, but realistically, they have more chance than Rodin to ever stick with Canucks in the NHL level. Rodin has played worst compared to the 3 previous players (albit in AHL in Chicago), I really don't see any initiative for him to come back and play in Utica.

  7. Who says he won't? It's an opinion based board, where we voice our opinions. I say the kid has the right stuff, more so than guys who were drafted a lot higher. As he grows into a man, he's going to be something special. He's still really playing in a boy's body, and impressing. Ehlers, on the other hand, looks to be physically developed already. He's at his ceiling. Our guy is already better, so he's going to be great! IMHO:)

Being able to state your opinion doesn't mean whatever you say that is defying logic or completely without base is gonna be right....

I mean Dmitry Zhukenov might become a NHL player.. but stating he is a sure fire elite NHL player is waaaaay overboard.

  8. While this can be argued to be more along the lines of "thinking out loud" by Kuzma, it's nice to see Gaunce continuing to trend upwards.

Link to article here, and quoted for those who would like to read it:

Extra tidbit: Here's Kuzma's predictions on our opening night roster

Thanks for posting the article. Love Gaunce. I think he will be a great middle 6 forward for the Canucks in the future and score some clutch goals for us in the playoffs when Canucks can make the playoffs as a... maybe not contender.. but at least a team that can cause some noise in the playoffs.

  9. sorry , how could I forget Sasha Barkov.

I love horvat , but I make that trade straight up all day.

that kid has First line C all over him , like a better Mikku Koivu.

especially with the guidance of Jagr this year , he is going to have an amazing season.

Agree. Barkov is going to be a great 2nd line C or a more defensive minded 1C. Still remember last season watching a game where Canucks played Panthers. Was absolutely amazed at how Barkov can control the puck and keep possession in our zone. They also have Bjugstad who looks like a really good 2 way center as well.

Florida's top 6 C depth looks pretty good right now and in the near future.

  10. Sedin-Sedin-Vrbata

    Baerstchi-Bonino-Kassian

    Burrows-Horvat-Hansen

    Gaunce-Cassels-Dorsett

Not a physical line-up by any stretch of the imagination but Horvat is in a slightly better position to succeed and Gaunce and Cassels can learn from Dorsett much the same way that Horvat did last year. Kassian can play his game distributing to two shooters and play physical in the crease. Vey doesn't slot into the line-up, but would probably be in Cassels position in the event of a poor training camp from Cassels, which probably won't happen. Could also see Grenier winning a spot at 4C.

Don't think Grenier has ever played C before so I doubt he will be a C.

I don't see how Cassels will be 4C next year unless he has an outstanding camp. I think we will keep Vey has an extra forward that can slot in during injuries. I think we will re-sign Richardson to a 1-2 year contract to be our regular 4C.

  11. Okay so the plan was to go with Lack/Markstrom in the 2015 season? Lack who was forced into being a starter at the end of the 2014 season and albeit with a train wreck of D infront of him still crashed himself. Was our 'dumbass' GM supposto stick with status quo and hope for Lack to rebound into a starting goaltender in the NHL and a prospect who btw is still a prospect in Markstrom to carry our team?

He made the call to bring in a veteran Olympic goalie in Miller; and incase you didn't notice that forced Markstrom to stay in the AHL where it looks like *knocks on wood* he's found his game again.

I agree. Lack wasn't playing well near the end of last season (although he was severely overworked) and Markstrom was coming off an average season in the AHL and his few games in the NHL. Goaltending was a very big risk for us going forward.

Bringing Miller in stabilized our goaltending situation and allow us to send Markstrom down to get more playing time in the AHL. Look at Markstrom, he is playing very well in the AHL regular season and playoffs and will become at least a decent trading chip for us this upcoming draft.

Although I agree signing Miller to such a long and high cap hit contract might not be the most ideal plan, people should give credit to Benning who managed to slip Markstrom (throught waivers) into the AHL and allowed him to develop back into a good goalie prospect at the minimum. People also need to remember that as average as Miller's number looked, there are a few games (esp. early parts of the season) where Miller absolutely bailed us out.

At the minimum, signing Miller gave us an extra trading chip to fill some of the other bigger holes in the club. We need value other than in the form of draft picks in order to be able to get value from other teams. Sure giving up Lack (or Markstrom) might sting, but at least we can get some decent value for positions where we have a little extra depth (which is not something this organization can say about its defense and forward.)

  12. thats what I wonder...I can't find any videos or information on it.

Nevertheless if he can that does give him an advantage

Here's a highlight from Mar 20th game (I believe the last game before the playoffs for the Oil Kings where they lost 6-2)

^ Follow that guy on youtube, he occasionally uploads video of Canucks junior prospect games.

From my views, I gather the following:

    - Plays primarily on the left side with Aaron Irving (Nashville 6th round pick in 2014) on the right

    - Plays powerplay and I believe some PK

    Pros:

    - Loves to rush the puck up the ice, with Irving staying behind to cover for him most of the time.

    - Can stick handle pretty well, on a PP he was skating on the offensive blue line and stick handling to create space for the other players.

    - Have good patience with the puck and tried to hold onto and make passes on the PP

    - Good stick defensively, knock the puck off attacking players on a few occasion.

    - Threw 1 memorable hit on the other team's forward

    - Maintain good distance when defending 1 on 1 (he did get burned on 1 of them, which resulted in a goal against)

    - 2A in this game. 1st was a player tipping his shot (on a PP I believe?). 2nd was a 2nd assist finished by his teammates.

    Cons:

    - 2-3 bad-brutal turnovers... first one was a pass up to the opposite team player's stick in the slot that was stopped by a great save by Tristan Jarry (Pittsburgh 2nd rounder 44th overall in 2013). *Jarry looks really good in this game too.

    - 2nd one was not able to cleanly receive a pass at the point and the other team had a breakaway and scored.

I am no expert, but from this 1 highlight video, he seems like a LHD more offensively oriented defenseman. Good offensive skills, but definitely need some work in his defensive side of game.

  13. Is there any harm in letting Bo play for the London Knights for 15 games, bring him to the big club for 3 games.

Send him down for another 15 games in the OHL, bring him back for 3.

Send him down again for 10 games and bring him back 3.

If he does well at the end of his 3 games, keep him up. Otherwise, send him back and let him lend the knights in the playoffs.

I don't think you can do that. As soon as you send him down to CHL, you can't recall him back to the NHL for the remainder of the season. I also don't see the point of sending him back and forth between London and Vancouver. Just seems like an unnecessary wear and tear.

  14. So he left back for Russia already.. I think I heard he'll be back next year (I assume Summer is what they meant)

(I was at the ubc rink Thursday)

Thanks for the update. Kind of weird timing if you ask me. Is KHL training camp starting soon? I am surprised he can't stay for that extra day or 2 to at least participate in the 4 vs 4 or at least for the whole training camp... Visa issues?

  15. with all the talk of goalies starting out in the pros later i decided to check on what age goalies from the first 2 rounds usually start. i found tbhat majority of them end up in the nhl at the age of 20. price gibson brodour lou jake allen etc i wonder if demko could be ready in a couple of years he was ranked to go in the 1st round rthis year

Is different though. All of Carey Price, Martin Brodeur, John Gibson, Roberto Luongo, and Jake Allen all played in the CHL instead of the NCAA. They usually have a shorter time to climb into the NHL because they finish their junior career at 20. However, Demko is in Boston College, so unless he opts out he should take his time to finish his 4 years in college before going to either the AHL or NHL team.

  16. As I understand it, players can indeed play in the ahl under 20. The hang up is the agreement between the nhl and the chl. That's kinda why I thought if London could be convinced to release Horvat, then Horvat could gain some better experience in the ahl, without the pressure of performing in the nhl. I can't find any precedence of that happening though. I really think that another year in junior may be more detrimental to his development that beneficial.

Right sorry, I forgot that if you are drafted from Euro leagues, you can play in the AHL under 20 because those euro draftees (or UFA) are not under the CHL-AHL agreement.

But since Horvat is under the CHL-AHL agreement, and his importance to London, I doubt they will let him go.

  17. It'd be very surprising that any junior team would release their rights to a player so an NHL team could play them in the NHL. It was certainly a one off that Jensen was able to, but then he was going to play overseas instead. He'll be in the NHL or OHL this year, not the AHL.

even if London released him, I think he doesn't meet the age requirement to play in the AHL. Only special circumstances such as RNH during the lockout year can play in the AHL under 20 years old.

  18. Does anyone think that Gulutzen was kept for a reason...we know Kass liked him but maybe the Canucks knew something about Willie long before now and Gully was part of the plan to get Willie here after having worked together in Dallas?

Funny they fire the entire coaching staff except for 1 asst. coach..coaches usually hire their own assts.

    Just throwing it out there..

Linden mentioned during his introductory conference as President of Hockey Ops he liked the way Gulutzan handles and communicates with the young players. Just curious, where do you hear about the Kassian stuff? I find it interesting Kassian like the coaching staff last year considering the circumstances he was put in.

Well there's still one more assistant coach position that is free for Desjardin to hire so it should be ok.

I just have a question though, how many coaches are a team limited to hiring? I know Stevens was promoted to associate coach by LA. I am wondering is it possible for Linden or Benning to promote Gulutzan to associate coach and let Willie hire 2 assistants to help?

    Thanks in advance.

  19. Let's take look of all the first round players we traded away that went on to have NHL careers.

Cam Neely 9th overall 13 seasons

JJ Daignauelt 10th overall 17 seasons

Bryan Allen 4rth overall 15 seasons and counting

Rj Umberger 16th overall 10 seasons and counting

Cory Schneider 26th overall 6 seasons and counting

Michael Grabner 14th overall 5 seasons and counting

Cody Hodgson 10th overall 4 seasons and counting

    Jordan Schroeder ?????

    Well... what about Patrick White?

I mean.. there's bound to be busts in one team's draft no matter the position.

    Hopefully Schroeder is not.
