  1. Schultz said in numerous interviews that he didn't want a guaranteed spot, he wanted to earn his place on the team. He also said that his parents aren't Canucks season ticked holders.

Looks like he didn't pick Vancouver because he thought the Oilers are a better team for him and a better team going into the future.

  2. Edmonton trade Pronger to the Ducks after Pronger demands a trade, Oilers trade Pronger FOR Lupul, Smid, 1st, conditional 1st (if Ducks win the cup within the next 3 years)

The guaranteed 1st was traded to Phoenix where Phoenix picked Nick Ross. Oiler traded up with Phoenix to pick Riley Nash. Oilers traded Riley Nash in 2010 to Carolina FOR 46th overall where they picked Martin Marincin.

The conditional 1st turned into 22nd overall in 2008 where the Oilers picked Jordan Eberle

The Oilers in 2007 off season applied an offer sheet to Dustin Penner which the Ducks did not match. The compensation was a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd.

The 1st round pick turned into 12th overall. The Ducks traded this pick to Buffalo FOR Buffalo's 1st and 3rd round picks in 2009. The 12th overall pick turned into Tyler Myers.

The 2nd round pick from Edmonton which was 43rd overall turned into Justin Schultz.

Anaheim traded the 3rd round pick to the Islanders where the Islanders draft Kirill Petrov.

  3. The Oilers will be a good team, but will have a heck of a time fitting in all those 1st overall picks once the level entry contracts expire. No realistic way they keep this group intact for very long.

  4. Do you know what people are referring to when they talk about a "top 4 D-man"?!!!

If Alberts and Rome were the best 2 D we had, they would get top 4 minutes and be onteh PP. Does that make them top 4 D men when discussing talent? No, it does not. Every team has 4 D men that get the top minutes. The caliber of those players varies greatly. Edmonton now has 1 maybe 2 D-men that fit the description of what a contending team would consider top 4. One of those has yet to play a game in the NHL.

I was basing the Oilers defencemen on a playoff calibur team.

  5. Well, you have to slot in anyone on those spots... For an example, if your defence is weak, and you have no better option than Aaron Rome, you slot him in on a top4 role, that doesn't really mean Rome automatically becomes a top4 d-man. That says more about the team than Aaron Rome.

The Oilers best pairing last season was Smid-Petry. I'd say they'd be an average 2nd pairing on a playoff team. Whitney had a horrible season last year. He was a top pairing defenceman before surgery. Since he's a UFA at the end of the coming season, I expect him to have a rebound season, probably not top pairing but a decent 2nd pairing defenceman. N.Schultz is a stay at home defenceman. Nothing flashy but dependable. He'd probably be an ok 4th or a good 5th defenceman on a playoff team. I put J.Schultz as a top 4 defenceman, it might be premature but we will see.

IMO, Oilers need to add one more top 4 defenceman to have a shot at the playoffs.

  6. 5 top 4 d-men????? since when!??!?! did they sign weber and suter when i wasn't looking?? because that would only bring them up to 2 top 4 d-men.... and player hitting FA at the same time REALLY does matter, ASK CHICAGO!

its nice that you numbered your points so everyone can tear them apart one by one... maybe you should just put more thought into your next set of bold statements, especially the 5 top 4 d-men the oilers haven't had in decades.

Do you know what a top 4 defenceman is?

It's a defenceman who plays either 1st of 2nd pairing, usually getting 20+ minutes a night that can take a regular shift even strength and play on at least one of the special teams.

  7. 1. yes...because the "committed" owner threatened to move the team if the taxpayer didn't build them one.

    2. Every team has 4 top defencemen or they would only have a bottom 2!! The caliber is the question. Edmonton have no top caliber D. Schultz will be their "Weber".

    3. Dubnyk will be a middle of the pack goalie his entire career. Cory has already played more pressure-packed games than Dub and has shown he will be a top tier goalie.

    4. What's your point? Revolving coaches is still a fact.

    5. Having wealth doesn't mean you're willing ot spend it...quite often it is the opposite. Despite the Oiler's horrible performance the last few years, has the owner gone to FA to try and attract seasoned, quality players to improve the team? No...he has relied on placing last to draft through the lottery.

    6. Ask Chicago about FA and the impact on a team that plans short-term for a cup run. It sure dos make a difference how you structure your team with "stars" mid-range and support staff.

    1. The statement from Katz was the Oilers would not be sustainable in Edmonton without a new arena.

    2. I agree that Edmonton doesn't have any top pairing defencemen.

    3. We'll see. Schnieder plays infront of a good team which helps him look better as a goalie.

    4. If Krueger goes anytime soon, so does Tambellini.

    5. The UFA market is a horrible place to get players. Teams end up spending big money on average players.

    6. Chciago was hooped because of a few reasons. One is that Tallon didn't submit the qualifying offers in time. Another one is that Toews and Kane were on their final year of their entry level deals and were already extended to 6.3 mil contracts. Since Chicago won the cup, Toews, Kane and a few others received bonus performances that were pushed to the next season making it even harder for them to retain their players.

  8. Dubnyk will never be Schnieder. Don't compare the two please.

Schneider has played a total of what, 76 games? Dubnyk has played 101.

Both are around the same age but never played a full season as a starter. Schneider may have better numbers but he plays infront of a better team. Elliott had amazing stats last season. Is he the best goalie in the league?

  9. WIth an arena that is falling apart, no quality D (except a skinny kid who has never played a game in the NHL), an unproven goalie, a revolving door of coaches, an ownership group that doesn't like to spend money and a core group who will all be hitting FA expecting major raises at the same time....sure looks like Edmonton has all their ducks in a row, alright.

What the F are you talking about.

    1. Oilers are building a new arena as we speak

    2. The Oilers now have five top 4 defencemen.

    3. Dubnyk can go either way, just like Schnieder

    4. Oilers were one of the best places to coach. It was recently that the coaches started coming in and out.

    5. The Oilers have one owner, Darryl Katz of Rexall pharmacies. He is one of the richest people in Canada.

    6. All players hit free agency, same time or not it doesn't make much of a difference
