    Streak: W 3

’Im happy we won the game but I can’t stand the way we won. I just thought we got out-worked in the third period. I just thought they brought it up a level and I thought we were tentative. I’m not going to just keep on ripping the team here. We won the game. We found a way to win the game but I thought we pissed away a point."

    AVALANCHE (20-7-0) at CANUCKS (16-10-5)

    TV: ALT, SNET-P

    Last 10: Colorado 6-4-0; Vancouver 5-3-2

Season series: This is the first of three games between the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks. They won't face each other again until March 27 at Pepsi Center.

Big story: Colorado concludes its three-game trip through Western Canada at Rogers Arena with hopes of securing a second victory. Vancouver is playing the second of a five-game homestand; with three consecutive wins, the Canucks are climbing the Pacific Division standings and have moved into a tie for fourth place with the Phoenix Coyotes at 37 points.

    Team Scope:

Avalanche: Colorado brushed off an 8-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday by earning a 3-2 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday. Maxime Talbot, PA Parenteau and Nathan MacKinnon scored, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 26 saves for the Avalanche, who improved to 17-0-0 when leading after two periods.

"It was very important," Giguere said. "We needed to respond the right way, show everybody that we're human, the same as anyone else. We might lose some games where we didn't play well, but we're able to bounce back the next game."

Canucks: Vancouver nearly let another blown lead on home ice turn into a loss, but Chris Higgins scored 3:41 into overtime to give the Canucks a 3-2 win against Phoenix at Rogers Arena on Friday.

Jason Garrison and Henrik Sedin scored in the second period to give Vancouver a 2-0 lead, but Antoine Vermette and David Moss scored 2:21 apart midway through a third period that saw Phoenix outshoot the Canucks 18-8.

The Canucks also blew four leads in the third period while only winning one game during a recent six-game homestand.

"We found a way to win the game, but I thought we [gave] away a point to a team we are chasing," coach John Tortorella said. "We have to get out of this situation of not finishing games because we are going nowhere until we do."

Who's hot: Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog has a four-game point streak (two goals, four assists). Right wing PA Parenteau has goals in back-to-back games. … Vancouver's Daniel Sedin had two assists Friday. He has two goals and four assists in the past five games.

Injury report: Colorado defenseman Jan Hejda will miss 10-14 days with a knee strain. He sustained the injury Thursday against Edmonton. The Avalanche are also expected to be without defenseman Ryan Wilson (back) and forward Alex Tanguay (knee). … Vancouver forward Jordan Schroeder (ankle) is out.

    PREVIEW

    COYOTES (16-8-4) at CANUCKS (15-10-5)

    TV: FS-A PLUS, SNET-P

    Last 10: Phoenix 4-4-2; Vancouver 4-3-3

Season series: This is the second of five games between the Phoenix Coyotes and Vancouver Canucks. Antoine Vermette had the shootout winner for Phoenix in a 3-2 win at Jobing.com Arena on Nov. 5.

Big story: The Canucks are aiming for a third consecutive victory. If they can pull it off in regulation, they'll move past the Coyotes into fourth place in the Pacific Division.

    Team Scope:

Coyotes: Entering the game Wednesday against the Calgary Flames, goalie Mike Smith trailed only the Canucks'Roberto Luongo with 24 starts. Phoenix coach Dave Tippett elected to give his No. 1 a rare breather on the second night of a back-to-back, but Thomas Greiss (14 saves) had a rough go in a 4-1 loss.

It wasn't all his fault, as a late first-period goal by the Flames deflected in off Coyotes defenseman David Schlemko and another goal hit off Vermette's stick before beating Greiss.

"I didn't think we were too bad tonight, especially for a back-to-back," Schlemko said. "They got two, maybe three fluky ones, but if we come with the same effort on Friday, play a little bit harder, hopefully we'll get a few bounces."

Canucks: This is the start of a five-game homestand for Vancouver, which is looking to improve on a pedestrian 5-5-3 record at Rogers Arena. The Canucks come off a 3-1 win against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday, but they lost a key player for the second game in a row.

First it was forward Alexandre Burrows suffering a broken jaw Sunday against the Carolina Hurricanes, then defenseman Alexander Edler left in the first period with an apparent leg injury. Veteran Andrew Alberts is expected to take Edler's spot in the lineup. The news Thursday didn't sound particularly promising.

"We got a little [update] this morning but it's the same, he is still being evaluated," assistant coach Glen Gulutzan said. "He is out indefinitely, but still being evaluated by our guys today again."

Who's hot: Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle has goals in consecutive games. Captain Shane Doan has one goal and two assists in the past two games. … Canucks forward Ryan Kesler has consecutive multi-goal games, while defenseman Jason Garrison has back-to-back games with two assists.

Injury report: Phoenix defenseman Zbynek Michalek (lower body) and forward Lauri Korpikoski (upper body) are on injured reserve. … In addition to Edler and Burrows, forward Jordan Schroeder (ankle) is sidelined for Vancouver.

    Ranger's line up

    Last 10: Vancouver 3-4-3; New York 5-5-0

Season Series: The Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers meet for the first time this season. Henrik Lundqvistmade 40 saves and the Rangers scored all of their goals in the third period to defeat the Canucks 4-0 at Rogers Arena in the teams' previous meeting Oct. 18, 2011. The teams don't see each other again until the Rangers come to Vancouver on April 1.

Big story: Canucks coach John Tortorella faces the Rangers in his first regular-season game since he was fired by New York on May 29. Tortorella opposes current Rangers coach Alain Vigneault, who was let go by the Canucks on May 22 and hired after Tortorella was let go.

Tortorella is trying to play down his return to Madison Square Garden; he's more concerned about the play of his current team. Despite a 5-2 victory against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, the Canucks have won just of their past 11 games and sit in fifth place in the Pacific Division, three points out of a playoff spot.

"Quite honestly, we've beaten this thing up," Tortorella said Friday. "It's another game on the schedule. It's a very important game for us to try to gain some traction. We need to continue trying to gain traction. That's all this is about. We have enough things to worry about with our hockey club."

    Team Scope:

Canucks: Vancouver beat the Senators on Thursday by scoring four unanswered goal in an 8:51 stretch of the second period. Daniel Sedin began the surge with his 300th career goal, making him the third Canuck to reach the milestone since Vancouver joined the League in 1970.

"I think we did a good job of just moving on after the first [period]," said Henrik Sedin, who had two assists. "We came in here, we had a good talk, and we came out really strong in the second."

Rangers: New York ended a five-game road trip with 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Friday. Although the Rangers have seven wins in their past nine road games and went 3-2-0 on the trip, Vigneault was very unhappy with their effort at TD Garden.

"We got exactly what we deserved," Vigneault said. "We had too many guys with their 'B' game on the ice against a Stanley Cup finalist, a team that was obviously not happy with their performance [a 6-1 loss Wednesday to the Detroit Red Wings]. Our lack of consistency has been an ongoing issue here with a few of our players and we're a .500 hockey team right now, and that's definitely not good enough."

Who's hot: Henrik Sedin, Vancouver's leading scorer, has points in three of his past four games (3-2-5). Twin brother Daniel has points in four straight (2-5-7). Roberto Luongo made 37 saves against the Senators to improve to 11-7-5 with a 2.32 goals-against average and .915 save percentage … Derek Stepan has points in three of his past five games for the Rangers. Rick Nash has goals in his past two games and three in six games since returning from a concussion.

Injury report: The Canucks are without Jordan Schroeder (sprained ankle) … Rangers forward Derek Dorsett (sprained wrist) missed the game Friday.
