  1. What I find the most appalling is that the OP is actually pretty high on Horvat while maintaining this view on Gaunce. Their play is not separated by much but his view on both players contrast drastically.

Based on just this tournament I agree with KassianBeastMode. Points aside i thought Horvat was way better and that Gaunce did suffer from a lack of grith that horvat( and Manny) posesses.

A mean streak, even though unlikely to occur, WOULD put Gaunce at another level and he STILL coasts a bit too much. You cant blame this on hockey IQ. Horvath is just as smart and is always skating. This is why Horvath can keep up with fast thinking players like Shinkaruk.

However I do believe all this can be explained with just a slow start to the season and I expect Gaunce to be better at main camp. I do believe he will play for the canucks regularly in a couple of years. a 4th line C that plays a few hundred games is a big win for a late 1st round pick.

  2. if he wanted to stay after the young stars tourney can he do so?, can he do as he likes with his contract (KHL) or can he not play in the NHL until the 2 years are up?

Probably wouldn't be the best idea, as he can't speak English yet. He specifically mentioned wanting to honour the last two years of his contract before coming to town, so it's a moot point.

Sorry guys but its not like in the old days when NHL could do whatever they wanted regardless of contracts. This contract will need to be honoured unless there is an NHL out (Wich I believe is very uncommon or even impossible in the KHL).

There has been cases where players have been able to buy themselves out of a KHL contract but I believe that requires the club to actually let you.

KHL and NHL has that agreement in place to honour contracts

  3. What the hell? No way we take Fiala over Dal Cole. Or Draisaitl for that matter...

Bigwhite has a video on Fiala, so I'll entertain the notion of him going in the top 15, if only because Bigwhite has watched and recorded more tape than any scout. Anyway, here's the video:

His 11 points in 17 games at the SHL level is actually better than Nylander with 7 points in 22. He's 3rd now in CSS euro rankings, that's a big rise from being ~11th earlier this year. He's also ahead of projected 1st rounders in Pastrnak and Kempe.

In 2012 Filip Forsberg was the 1st ranked European skater, with 1 point in only 6 SHL games (granted he was ppg in Allsvenkan - Sweden's AHL). Fiala destroys that.

I am also not very surptised he ranked high. In addistion to the previous stats Fiala is currently holding his own in the WC at the age of 17. Even if it is for Switzerland it is still pretty good.

Also he dominated both wjc 18 and 20.

  4. I would be fine with trading the pick. Even If we win the lottery. There are always stupid GMs and someone would overpay to have a little fun at draft day.

I believe in Nylander but he would be a couple of years away from making impact and we need a top 6 scorer faster than that.

  5. The one player I hope doesn't drop down to wherever we pick is William Nylander. Being a fan of MoDo I have watched him play and I am really not that impressed with him. I think he will be a decent NHL player but he is a risky pick with his size. Also seems that he has some attitude issues with the way he has conducted himself with MoDo, pretty much only wanting to get loaned out to Sodertalje in the second league.

I Hope we draft him. I agree it is a risky pick but in a somewhat weak draft I consider Nylander to have the highest potential and he is the only one I can see as a future firstliner. We have a bunch of two-way players coming up so I say take the risk.

  6. And whats wrong with that? So I don't have time to watch a bunch of OHL games. I watch the highlights because of time. How do you have time to watch all that hockey if you are supposedly also watching Canucks games? That adds up a lot of hours sitting in front of a screen. What do you do for a living WarHippy?

An on demand game takes an hour and a half if you skip the intermissions. Thats why I at least get to watch a game from time to time.

  7. It might take a pretty big contract to get him over though. He rejected the qualifying offer to move home to SHL this season. A good SHL contact usually payd more than an AHL wage.

I reall y hope he hasnt given up on NA or the Canucks.

  8. I just watched the London Game. Horvat played all game with Domi and Anderson on a line that went up against the Tolchinsky line most of the game. (By god that russian dude can play!).

Anderson and horvat played a good game in spite of their numbers. Domi did ok I guess but he didnt really thrive in a defensive role wich might explain his lack of production lately. They did have a few quality chances.

  9. Speed is not something you can teach. Gaunce can improve his skating but he will never be Kesler fast. Cody Hodgson also has this disease.

Off course it can! do you think some mystic diety resides in his legs spending his days laughing at at humanity and their "laws of physics" and the ever so foolish notion of "training a muscle"?

Usain Bolt was, if I remember correctly 23 when he broke his own WR at 100 meters. I guess someone didnt tell him he shpuld have stopped training at 19.

The willingness to use speed to play a gritty and intense game could prove harder to teach though.
